Tom

I scratch-built a TOS tricorder a couple of months back, with nothing but hand tools (well, I did use a cordless drill).

I've had the last what, last ten months to think about upgrades for these? Now that they're finally here, I'm feeling more and more like I might leave it alone. Mostly.

Replacing the parts that are supposed to be metal would basically mean rebuilding the entire tricorder, and the black plastic parts aren't so accurate that they'd be worth saving once you made all those custom metal parts. And only replacing select parts with metal would probably only call more attention to the things that weren't.

Right now, without having one in my hands, I'm thinking I might simply paint the video screen gray, perhaps add some gold to the mic grill, and replace the buttons with actual T-Jet hubs.

(nervous laugh):confused My friend's father was in the carpenter's union, and he use to purposely gross us out as kids with accident stories. I blame him for my small phobia!!!! Damn him!!!! :confused

Okay... what about a repaint of their silver? If it's going to be anything like the silver paint they used on the comm, it's gonna suck. Anyone know of a good silver or chrome paint that could be used to spruce it up a little?

Same here a little touch up here and there some silver paint and might paint the screen!!

I received a message that mine was shipped today.
But I have a problem with the fact that the med scanner
does not spin. you have to press or push a thumb thingy of some sort.

Now if the original prop did spin ok, But it did not have sound
(that was added later)

So they remove the motor making it like a 50'S toy with a push button
and added sound :confused :confused. Taking away from the original prop which
did not have sound !!!!!!!
(my opinion and two cents)
(and do not tell me they do not have motors that small)
It's 2009 you mean to tell me that they could not add a
motor and the sound.
I do not think I would bother to mod that toy because they
could not make the scanner spin keeping true to the original prop

I will be sending it back.

I would of rater had the scanner spin than the moire'.........Never seen the Moire' spin on the show!! Oh well not like I am going to have my 43 year old butt out in the front yard scanning for life forms!!:lol.............................I will be in the back yard scanning for life forms!!!:eek:lol:lol:lol:lol:lol

I used Spaz Stix Mirror Chrome spray on this phaser part.

It has a real good chrome look when sprayed over gloss black, and takes handling well.

Are the black and silver parts separate? Or are they molded as one piece with the silver areas painted?

Thanks for the pics and review silverskyes. Now to see some comparisons with the other Tricorders :)

Well, that is obviously your call, but I think this toy looks amazing.

Think about it -- a full size (or darn close to it) replica of the tricorder that is more or less 95 to 97% accurate AND comes with options to have either the SCIENCE or MEDICAL SCANNERS which also look to be about 95% accurate if not moreso AND they BOTH have authentic sounds -- AND ALL THIS FOR UNDER $50.

I think anyone who keeps talking smack about these doesn't truly appreciate how amazing it is to have a TOY like this for the price.

Remember, it is first and foremost a TOY. I'm sure they know that 99% of their customer are well over 30 years old -- but it is still a TOY and not a high end prop replica.

As much as I would have loved to have a spinning med scanner, I can forgive them this -- geesh, they didn't have to include the scanner at all.

And guess what -- it really isn't as easy as you think to cram a motor in there. The original prop had the motor actually up inside the spinning part believe it or not -- just check YOUTUBE:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXjPPaUUSYY

I'm just happy they seem to have made it ACCURATE -- compare the DST scanner to the PLAYMATES version and you'll see what I mean.

As for making any mods to it, I suppose I can see painting the screen grey, the mic screen gold and perhaps switching out the control knobs for the thunder jet hubs and maybe even switching out the lights with the watch winding knobs -- maybe -- but I can't see why you would want to invest all the time and effort into adding metal parts. As somone else already pointed out, the shell isn't 100% accurate, so why put all that effort into it -- if you truly love the prop that much, save your pennies for an HMS kit or keep on eye on John Long's site as he may offer a kit that you know will look like it could have come right off the actual set.

I don''t have mine in hand yet, but the pics I've seen posted make me think this will be one of the best toys of this prop EVER made and likely ever to be made.

If you really need a spinning scanner, I think DStines is getting ready to do a run of these and HMS offers them through Rod.com...and as others have said, someone here may figure out a way to modify the toy with a small enough motor to make it spin.

Okay -- rambled on long enough....but I will end by saying that THIS is the toy I always wanted when I was 10 years old running around my back yard with my makeshift tricorder prop fashioned from cardboard box with LightBrite Pegs for control knobs.

I still have an unbuilt 24th Century Tricorder kit laying around. I wonder how many of the metal parts from that would be an easy swap out on this Tric?
