Diamond Select Star Trek Tricorder

No motorized "spinner" in the medical tricorder scanner, per DST:

"We opted for sound and a gear box that was actuated with a thumb dial." :cry No wonder they didn't show it at Toy Fair. Oh well, we still get a cool tricorder toy.

Well that makes my decision easy. :lol

Where's the cheapest site to get a tricorder?

As long as it makes that woodeelee-woodeelee-woodeelee sound, I can live with manual spinning. I know Diamond had to make choices, and I think they made the right ones overall.

I'm just glad these are finally available, THAT should be the big news!

I'm a little disappointed. After the AA comm came out, I thought the matter of a spinning moire was moot in the tricorder. I bought a few, and I can't change my order now, but this will affect my science tricorder purchase.

Well no, both tricorders DO have spinning moires, it's the small hand-held medical scanner that has a manually-operated function.

The sciences version is $34.99 at newforcecomics.com; the exclusive EE medical version is $39.99 (apparently, same price everywhere that sells it).

There's a way to get them for a little cheaper with free shipping at EE. If you join Live.com Cashback, EE gives a 7.5% cashback on purchases made through that site. If you purchase items over 99.00, shipping is Free. Using both, you can get a Tricorder for around 36.99 and Free Shipping. But, you have to make your purchases through the Live.com site in order to qualify for the cashback rebate. The cash is real and there's no hanky panky there. You just have to wait 60 days for the cash to be available to withdraw from your account.

Actually, I was never that keen on the moire pattern spinning in the tricorder as this was never seen on the original series prop...but hey, I'm just happy they are releasing a toy of this prop that appears to be pretty darn close in appearance and size to the real deal -- and the additional scanners are a bonus.

I remember as a kid trying to make a med scanner from a wooden spool (for the base) and a cap that protected the nozzle of a spray paint can -- it was opaque white plastic. I made a little panel I covered in tin foil and put this INSIDE the opaque white tubular portion that sat on top and ran a wire from it down center of spool (which already had a hole running through the center) -- when I turned the wire with my finger, it spun the little silver fan inside the tube and approximated the whirligig that spun around on McCoy's scanner.

Crude, yes -- but to an 8 year old, it was fun to use on all my back yard "away missions" scanning various plant life (sunflowers that shot "poisonon spores") and strange alien life forms (neighbor's cat).

As I have said many many times, WHERE were all these toys when i REALLY needed them! :)

My credit card was charged on 5-29 for the EE exclusive, but my order status is still listed as "in stock." I'll let you know what I think of mine when it shows up.

I ordered one a few weeks ago from ToysRus. No news of shipping yet. Does look good. Checked out the video on youtube. Can't beat the price.

If I was a kid today, and I was fan of TOS, I would have mounds of fun with these DST Trek toys. As a kid, I use to make phasers with cardboard rollers from toilet paper, a communicator from a deck of cards' box, and a tricorder from a oatmeal box and masking tape. We've come a long way! :)

I can't even recall what very few scenes featured the science tricorder hand scanner. That's why I think it's a bonus. But with the medical tricorder it's really a must. So I'm a little disappointed that it doesn't spin on it's own. But I guess given the size, sound FX and spinning might be a little difficult... although they did fit all the electronics for the phaser in the type I... but I guess that doesn't involve a motor.

According to their website, my Entertainment Earth medical tricorder order was billed on 5-29 and shipped on 6-2. I'll let you know when it hits me in Michigan. I've also got a Science on order at New Force, but I haven't seen any change in that order status yet.
