Dexter's Kill Bag and Tools

You pick up a lot of stupid things observing the show instead of watching and enjoying it.

Wish we knew what the darn watch was. That's the one thing left that's driving me apepoop.

I wish I knew what the watch was too. Is there anyone else that works on the show that could tell us?

Just ordered the Large Bone Saw form the EMS site. Also talked to the woman about the Small Bone Saw and she was very helpful. She said they will ask other dealers or suppliers to see if they have any stock and get back to me about it. Keep your fingers crossed guys. Hopefully there would be at least 3 out there somewhere. I'm pretty sure myself and Pinder are the only 2 interested in it here. Pitbull, you must have bought the last one they had in stock.

Pitbull, have you heard anything back about the Small Saw? I PMed him but haven't got a reply yet.

The woman on the phone was very helpful. We talked for about 10:00 between me being on hold while she checked stock and on hold again while she talked to someone about finding a few of them.

Hopefully it pans out.

Yeah, the picture you emailed me was used for the outline of the blade and handles. I tweaked a few things in the 3D parts, like my fillets are elliptical and extend much further towards the middle of the handle.

...Right and a lot of those changes were based on my notes.

I'm not sure how I feel about this, considering my agreement was with Jimmy, not you, and most of the countless hours I put into the design, tweaking, honing and reshaping were done because he and I had an agreement.

...and now you're doing a run? :confused

I'm not going to be the buzz kill that ruins everyone's ability to get one of these knives, but it would have been nice to have been asked if doing a run, at least partly based on my design, was alright.

To everyone else: good luck tracking down the small bone saw. Unless any of these other companies stop manufacturing their wares, it seems that's the final sticking point in this amazing replicating process.

How do you guys think this should be resolved? I just want the Kill knife to get done and sooner rather then later. I've been excited for it --as have others-- for months since finding the Kill Tools.

I'm not trying to be argumentative saying this, but I'm not stopping anyone from doing anything.

I'm also not happy that I'm being portrayed as doing something wrong. Nick, I don't want to belittle all you've done with this design, but I see this knife as a group design. We've all added our two cents, and the knife is better for it.

I simply thought that, since I hadnt heard from either of you, you guys weren't interested in this anymore. Hard to believe with all the work you put in, but that's how I saw it. I just checked my emails to see when I got the last one from you. I must have overlooked the last one you sent with Jimmy's email addy. I've sent the files to both of you.

I'm sorry if I've stepped on anyones toes, it wasn't intentional.

I thought this was a group collaboration too. Like I said before, I just want it to get done. My Kill Bag is empty enough without the stupid rotten Small Bone Saw.

I'm about 3/4 of the way through the 2.5 hour cut for one of the handles. Thats right, 5 hours for both handles, plus whatever it will take for the blades. I might be able to speed it up a little, but don't want to risk it.

I'll post pics

heard nothing yet bro :thumbsdown

Looking very forward to seeing a completed knife!

Perfection takes time, especially with machining. I don't know how many hours I've spent in labs at school staring at the mills just to make sure "nothing goes wrong" on my assignments. They never did. Its funny how the simulators work properly.

I also was working on my own design for this knife, that I've talked with Tom about, that did not use anything from Nick's drawing. Although, they turned out VERY similar. We must both do great work. However, I did not finalize it as it seemed no one was interested to see my design or model I was working on. If Drew would rather I send him my work, I'd be glad to see if I still have it (recently switched to Mac, and have NONE of my old programs and lost a few files that I never backed up).

Here's the first aluminum handle. Ignore the 2 holes, they won't be there on the final version. Those are used to hold the blank in place, and they're supposed to be about .05 from the surface, but I couldn't find my bottoming tap so I had to drill them all the way through. The spot in the middle is where I touched the tool to gage the height. I though it was going to end up getting cut out, but I mis calculated something somewhere.

I didn't bother to drill the actual holes.

The finish is just a wire wheel and some sanding pad, like a dish scouring pad but tougher. I like the finish. The stepped edges will also not be on the final knife, I broke my ballend mill so I had to use a regular endmill stepping down .005 per pass.

The metal should be here next week sometime. I'm going to use the stainless I scrapped today to get the feeds and speeds figured out. I know I keep saying it's coming soon, but it really is!

Pinder, I'm sure we can work this problem out, but I would like to see your work too!

About the machines and their need to be supervised... I used to teach a manufacturing lab as a TA when I was in school, so I had to sit there with the students while they ran their projects. Talk about boring. Especially since you couldn't see anything through the flood coolant on the window!

Gotta be careful relying on simulators. They're 99% reliable, but I've seen some pretty bad crashes with tool changes the simulator didnt catch.

That looks like the perfect shape to me Drew. Nice job. Think it need to be a little shinier.

I'll speak for Drew on this... that is what the final stage is for. That looks about as rough as you can get... fresh off the mill with every single "check to see what works and what doesn't" done to it. :)

That said... lookin really good, Drew!

You would know better then me Pinder. You're the Jack of all Trades. :cool

Yeah, I'm not really sure how the finishes will be done. I've got some polishing wheels and such, I'll probably give those a shot tomorrow. Those wire wheel scratches are a little deeper than I expected, but I think I can get them out.

It's actually shinier in person though.

Do you have access to one of those vibrating polishers? That or media blasting with a very fine material might work. The handle seems to have a nice matte finish, absent machine marks, but still not very shiny.
