Re: Robo3687's IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

I'm not sure if scaling it up by proportion would be the way to go because the chest would come out wider and deeper as well. I think you're best bet would be to leave some parts alone like the chest and back. And scale the abs, arms, forearms, thighs and legs.
Also I think scaling it to your measurements would help get the right fit. Measure the length of your thigh (or where you'd expect the piece to start and end) and apply that dimension to the height in the Recalculate Parts Layout window.

Thanks for the comments. I too was worried of making every single piece better - I think i'll do as you've suggested and scale some pieces. My legs are pretty long so I'll up those and hopefully keep the chest/back normal and maybe up the abs/arms ab it too. I'll keep you updated.

Awesome work Robo3687!

The Godfather of Mark IV/VI HIMSELF! Glad to see you back at it building your creation again. Hopefully we get to see you complete this foam build. I can't thank you and STEALTH enough for all your help and for getting so many of us started on this.

Cheers!

Re: Robo3687's IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

thanks for all the kind words guys....

i should have a bunch more hot glue sticks sometime this afternoon so I should be able to get back into it....think i might do the helmet....

I am a triathlete and am scheduled to do my first Iron Man race at Lake Placid this July. You can see where this is going, right?

Hey Greg...pretty cool! I'm heading out to do IM Arizona this coming Sunday. Can't imagine the run in costume, but props to you for going for it.

Just FYI I worked the run course at Placid this year...the heat was pretty solid mid day...in painted foam you could find yourself in the med tent if you aren't careful, considering we kept running out of cooling sponges. You might consider modding this build for running? Maybe some of the built suit folks could comment on how possible it is to run in it?

Maybe less legs and more vents in armor somehow? Lighter foam? Also of consideration is how you fit that thing into your T2 bag...works a little differently at IM compared to most halfs, Olympics and sprints... just FYI if u didn't know.

Whatever you choose I love this thread, and be sure to pm me when you head up as I'll probably be working check-in this coming year and want to see what you come up with!

( sorry for the tri lingo guys...back to foam pep! I'm getting my materials together to join this awesomeness !!! )

You guys ROCK!!!
Mike

Are you going to do paper pep on the helm or foam? Let me know how it goes. I'm going to redo mine and not rush it this time.

Chapeau!!! looks already if you put the whole suit into an rubberpool! hehe.
I like the compact look awesome mate! Keep the motivation in your work!

Re: Robo3687's IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

Just took the 3 hours of the break in my split shift reading through this entire thread. Went straight on to ebay and ordered a 6mm camping mat :)
The finished armours look amazing. Robo, i nearly didnt recognise you in your pictures, glad you have finally decided to put an entire suit together, your really the person that made this art so popular.
Im sad to say i have finally decided to get rid of my fibreglassed parts. Pictures can be found in my signature. If anybody wants them just send me a PM n we can have a chat. Im keeping the hands though because they will be useful for the foam build, and the helmet sold on ebay.

Anyway hope to update you all with my progress over the next couple of weeks :)

IM Arizona? I've heard thats one of the craziest. How'd it go?

This is just an idea. Originally I was going to just have someone toss me the helmet when I crossed the finish line as a plastic hard costume would be too much, but the foam seems feasible. I may need to add more holes/vents and install some fans, but I'm thinking it may be doable. We'll see.

I was worried about the transition part - how much space do you get? I could have fam/friends along the start of the run hand me different parts.

Any ideas all of you out there how to make it lighter - maybe use 3-4mm foam for the whole thing, but any other good ideas on how to modify the template?

Thanks everyone!

Re: Robo3687's IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

Iron Man Mark VI Storage Suggestion, just hang it in the garage. Filled with inflatable kids floaties and a wet willie.

Scares me every once in a while when I am not expecting it.

Also here is a bad youtube video in the dark. Iron Man - YouTube

One more note; the excess glue can be removed by using the hot glue gun as a hot knife.
1. Clean tip of your glue gun with a wet rag
2. Wipe the tip down the seam of the glued foam pieces where the glue has squeezed out in the drying process. The excess glue will melt away quite easily. I do this at the final prep stage before I lightly sand the EVA.

If I can do it anyone can!

Re: Robo3687's IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

hey, can anyone give details on how to seal and paint the armour once its complete? I understand i have to coat it in plasti dip... not sure how many coats, are there any UK varients of this that are cheaper? And what type of paint is required? I assume automovtive paint isnt going to work on foam. Im UK based so please only give product names if your also UK based, most american products arent available here. Types of products would be more helpful. Cheers guys...
As for the foam i ordered, still not arrived, spent some time cutting out templates though :) in between gathering materials.

Re: Robo3687's IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

I don't know of any UK equivalent to Plasti-Dip. Automotive paint would still work. Once you put Plasti-Dip on, the fact that the piece is foam doesn't matter as the paint is going on the plastic.

Here Plasti-Dip is found in most hardware and automotive stores, you could try visiting those and ask if they sell a spray on liquid plastic product.

Edit: Regular automotive paint I would guess risks chipping or flaking if flexed too much. Paint specific for use on bumpers and other automotive plastic pieces would be best in my opinion because of the color and finish choices.

One of these days I will try making some foam armor for myself

You can also just use a plastic friendly paint too. Krylon Fusion works fine on raw EVA foam. Make sure to test it on a scrap first if you are not sure of compatiblity, of course.

The other option is to mix water and Elmer's(white) glue. DethBecomesYou recommends this often on the forums and suggests a 70% glue to water mix or so, depending how thick you want it. I believe you still need to use something like Krylon Fusion as a primer over the glue but you can get a smoother finish than raw foam and the glue gives it a bit of flex like Plasti-Dip.

Re: Robo3687's IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

Thanks for the replies. Chipping was my primary concern when i assumed automotive paint wouldnt work. Need something more flexible i assume? Plasti dip is available here, but its really expensive.

Also, my foam came after i left for work so i can start making my armour asap :D very happy. However, the foam seems VERY flimsy... is this right? It is 6mm foam on one of those camping mats. I wasnt expecting it to be so floppy.

Re: Robo3687's IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

I believe 6mm is supposed to be flimsy. I've seen yoga mats around that size and they are that way, though I wasn't sure if they were closed cell foam.

I think the foam starts getting stiffer closer to 12mm. Maybe it's possible to double up with some reinforcing brace pieces on the inside if it gets too flexible?

camping mats are not as dense as the anti-fatigue mats. That's why they're so flimsy and probably easy to rip by hand. I don't use those anymore.

Re: Robo3687's IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

*****!!!!! this is gonna rip!!! dammit!!!

All the anti fatigue mats i can find in the uk are over a cm thick :( usually 12mm.

This is really frustrating :(

Try some stores that carry a lot or specialize in exercise equipment, find out what they call the mats that you can buy to put the equipment on top of when you have hard floors. Usually they are about 6mm thick and are either rubber or EVA foam.

Re: Robo3687's IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

Chest section almost complete and i can confirm it is seriously flimsy. Gonna continue with this section anyway. Another few hours wasted trying to find the correct foam on the internet. Ebay seems useless. All anti fatigue mats, and exercise mats i can find are 12mm and over.
Someone from the UK must be using foam? Help me source materials at decent price.

Anyway, my advice is dont use camping mats!!! :( Would have been such a great source of material too because of the low price.

If i continue with this build, using this material, is there anything i can use to strengthen it when complete?
