Hi guys!
I'm from Argentina. I started my suit a month ago, using cardboard, but the whole fiberglassing thing is not for me (I don't have the patience or the space in my little apartment). I found this thread and I inmediatly started building the helmet on 2mm EVA foam. I think I'll use 2mm for the whole suit, sticking cardboard pieces to to the inner side to give them strengh.
I have a question for you guys:
Since I didn't know what kind of paint you are using, I just bought red and yellow foams, but I don't think the colours are quite right (it should be gold instead of yellow, and I know the red should be darker). What paint are you using? is there something else I should use to give it that shining look I see in your pictures?

The shine comes from a coat of polyurethane gloss (or similar).
You need to seal and prime the foam before painting it, people have posted their techniques on this forum. Most go along the lines of using PVA glue to seal, followed by a coat of Plasti-dip or similar so the paint can flex a bit. Followed by primer, paint and gloss.

i've decided to leave putting pics of mine up until i have the whole upper torso together, it doesn't sit right as it is now....
so far I have the chest, collar plates and about a quarter of the back done, and I think I'm getting better at it as I go...first few joints were messy as all get out...but now things seem a bit cleaner.....

Can't wait to see it Robo. My first attempt on the abs was all messy until I got the hang of it. Glue pouring out every which way lol

righto, I've run out of hot glue so I figured now was a good time to post some pics.
The glue got so light on at the end that I've mostly taped together the abs until I get some more.
I've also had a few battles with the hot glue, including a large area of hot glue (a good 2 square inches) falling onto my knuckle, only 10 seconds removed from the gun. Thusly, skin was removed from my knuckle with some lovely 2nd degree burns. It was hard to tell what was glue and what was skin...so I pulled it all off...lol..

Overall I'm very happy with how it's all going. Since when I originally designed it, I designed it to fit me exactly, I've learned 2 things:
1. it wouldn't have fit me when I designed it, but does now (losing 40lbs will do that)
2. being in it is like a posture corrector...seriously...i must have terrible posture because it was a serious effort to stand up straight in this thing....lol...

so, the pics. I'm hoping that once I lose the last 10 or so pounds I plan on losing, that it will fit even better. It's a teeny bit snug now.
also just looking at the pics now I had the abs on a bit crooked...but obviously thats just temporary..

I know this is going to sound crazy but the best way I found to clean up the hot glue that spills out of the seams is the use of cuticle nippers.My wife is a manicurist by trade and the tiny cutters get into small spaces nicely.They sell them at the Dollar Tree and you can find them at Wal Mart cheap.Again, I know this sounds crazy, but it works when the glue has cooled.

Sounds like a good tip but that glue is hardly noticble at all when it's all painted up and you're wearing it.
I guess it's just me. I don't take these foam suits very seriously. They're just fun to wear.

Hey everyone,
My names Greg and I just joined RPF for the sole purpose of posting and contributing to this thread. A bit of background and what I'm looking to do;
I am a triathlete and am scheduled to do my first Iron Man race at Lake Placid this July. You can see where this is going, right?
Originally my idea was to make an IM helmet using pepakura, resin, fiberglassing, silicone molding, and plastic casting. I have already gotten the pepakura done and will be fiberglassing/resin it soon.
Then I was looking around and saw Stealth/Robo's files, threads, etc and stumbled here. WOW. I'm blown away - what strikes me is that this is 100% easier and just as practical. It's got me thinking of doing the entire run portion of the race (a full marathon, if you're not familiar) in an IM suit.
I've read through this thread and have a pretty good understanding of where to go from here. I saw originally but can't find the link now of the cutter you guys are using to make the 45 degree cuts - I know there's some small, cheap thing you can buy, anyone got the link?
Like everyone else I have sizing issues. I'm 6'4'' and average build. Here's a pic of me in a race I did in costume a few months ago;
So I'm not fat by any means but I am very tall. I read a comment a few pages about about people saying the foam pep files are generally for a 6' person - should I add 4 inches to each piece as far as height? Your thoughts are all helpful.
Reading through this thread and seeing what you guys is doing is inspiring! I spend a lot of time training for this race - swimming, biking, running. I think working on this armor on the side and making it perfect is a great way for me to stay focused when I'm not training. Thanks for any info you all can provide and I hope to be here for the long hall.

Hi Gregchick1 - from the short time of lurking and absorbing information form this amazing forum adding 4 inches to each piece is going to make the armour excessively tall. You need to add 4 inches in total - so to adjust the overall scale to accomodate your height: the 6 foot scale is 25.411754 on my robo3687 files so divided that by 72 inches (6 feet) and then times by 76 inches (6'4 - your height) and a calcluated scale of 26.823518 is a better guestimate of adjustment.
If i am completely off I am sure one of the nice more experienced builders here will correct me.
Your lithe like build is too your advantage with the build you more than likely only need to concider the height variable - As a well built 6 footer I am having to work out where to add shims into the armour pieces to accommodate the extra girth of my chest legs and arms.
Good luck with the build and wow - a marathon in a full suit after the swim and cycle that's crazy but awesome.

I'm not sure if scaling it up by proportion would be the way to go because the chest would come out wider and deeper as well. I think you're best bet would be to leave some parts alone like the chest and back. And scale the abs, arms, forearms, thighs and legs.
Also I think scaling it to your measurements would help get the right fit. Measure the length of your thigh (or where you'd expect the piece to start and end) and apply that dimension to the height in the Recalculate Parts Layout window.

@Robo, thanks for all your work and efforts. I'm working w/ the foam templates and they are fantastic. I was going to do a bondo/resin pep helmet. Having never done pepakura before. Can you guys tell me what glue or adhesives you use for the paper pep parts. Also do you use the card stock for the pep parts too. Thanks for the help. Figured I would go to the pep masters for guidance.

Use regular hot glue and card stock paper. 110lbs card stock is what I used. Also, if you never done pep before Practice on an easier piece first. The helmet is no menial task. I did the helmet for my first pep and it turned into a disaster. Get the hang of it first then do the helmet.
