Re: Robo3687 - IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

How do you all scale the files? I tried, but it turned out way to small. I measured height of my head, converted it to mm, and put that number into the height box. Did I do something wrong?

Re: Robo3687 - IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

hey there!!!

im just new here and i am planning to make an iron man armor. i tried doing the pepakura file in cardboard for the helmet but unfortunately it got wet and was destroyed so i'll be starting from scratch again.

i just want to clear some things cause upon checking on the pdo files the scale of the helmet is 1.000 but when i checked the other files they're not equally scaled.

my question is if you print the files as it is, would they create a proportioned armor even though they are differently scaled? cause I'm 5'6 and i scale the helmet 86% smaller and it fits but since the other parts' scale are different, using the .86 scale i used from the helmet would make the other file smaller or bigger (well i think it would)

thank you

Hi all,

I'm a new member here! I'm in the uk, I have been reading this thread since Thursday/Friday last week! I'm lost for words at all the hard work that has been done to the foam files and to people making the iron man suit, great work all of you!

I want a suit myself, I can't wait to get stuck in to the project, only one problem, I'm working from an iPad, and as you can guess! I have a problem viewing the .pdo files!!!

Any help would be great! Thx in advance! Pm's welcome!!

I have a question regarding the painting process. I noticed that the preferred brand of spray paint is Duplicolor, but why is the preferred clear coat Rust-Oleum Paint for Plastic instead of Duplicolor?

Re: Robo3687 - IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

Hey, has anyone else tried mixing wood filler with the pva glue in a 1:1 ratio when coating the foam? I've been doing it with my pieces and it works out really well. It gives a semi rigid, but flexible sandable finish.

I've only gotten through the forearms, but I'm really happy with the results. I'm interested to know though if anyone else has tried it and what kind of results they got, I'd like to know how it holds up over time.

That sounds pretty cool. Do you have any example pictures of the finish?

After a few coats of pva, i think i'm gonna try and use some plasti dip to give it a better finish......what do you recommend,Spray or regular can?

Thanks in advance

Oh yeah just did a cheap mock up for the light up eyes too

Here's a quick shot I took this morning. I think it needs one more coat and then sanding.

What you see there is:
*one coat of pva glue for things to bond to
*wood filler in all the seams to fill in the seams
*a quick sand of the wood filler to smooth it out a little
*one coat of pva glue mixed 1:1 with wood filler

The thing I'm not sure of next is after I sand and prime it, what I should use as a replacement for spot filler. I'm thinking maybe just the straight up bits of wood filler but we'll see how it looks after sanding.

I tested this out on a piece of scrap first and it's quite flexible I was able to fold it right in half without any cracking.

Re: Robo3687 - IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

Hey guys,

I have yet another question.

So, I've been able to coat my armor just fine, however after painting, any real flex and the paint makes hair line cracks. When the costume isn't flexed they are hardly noticable, but still it kind of annoys me.

Have I done something wrong in my painting?
So far I this has been my prep and paint:
3 coats white glue
2 coats plastidip
2 coats prime
2 coats paint
latex clear coat

I'm using duplicolor paints. I have also noticed that when I use the metalic paint it comes out super flat on the piece, however when I paint just about anything else it give a semi gloss. This makes me think I'm doing something wrong in either the prep or paint process.

From what i have read, most people cut their white glue with water to help make your piece a little more flexible....I've been watching Stealth's tutorials on youtube and he suggests priming with 4 or 5 coats of glue/water.

I think with foam armour you are never going to get the kind of finish you can with a fully paper/resin/bondo one, i suppose the good thing with foam is you can peel off the old cracked paint, then redo it for a brand new piece again

The flex isnt so much the issue, so much as the paint cracking when it does.

Either way I'm probably going to start replacing the peices with fiberglass ones once I get over the initial fear of working with it.

Re: Robo3687 - IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

Yeah mate paint cracking on foam armour is always going to happen, hope all goes smoothly with trying your hand at fibreglass replacement parts....it does indeed seem very daunting

Re: Robo3687 - IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

Looks like you are getting great results with the PVA woodfiller combo! Cant wait to see more Dancin! I am making slow progress, but loving your IM MK3 Pep files and will have more pics to post soon! Life=distractions distractions + work+ house renovations - health issues = less time to work on armor LOL!
Glad to see your build coming along! So many of us owe you for our builds, I am glad you are building yours as well! Very exciting!
