Re: IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates- *Video Tutorial Link in first Post*

Hi people, first i would like to thank everyone who contributed to makeing pep and foam files, thanks you guys are awesome.

I diecided to make IM mk6 after seeing some your great builds, got everything, foam, cutters, hot air gun, hot glue, printed templates and then ran into problem while cutting them, heres the picture:
View attachment 211624 its 'SHARKMAN_IM_MK6_HELM_FOAM' faceplate piece.

its this unleveled gaps that are circled in the pic. i guess this gaps happened because of converting pep to foam, and its as much u can do in pepekura soft. i got that, but how should i cut it? do you cut lines thru the spaces and do some reconnecting like xrobot does in his pep to foam video? How did you guys do it?

I would appreciate any suggestion

Thanks.

Most probably just printing them normally and cutting them as naturally as possible without gaps. Which means you have to connect them in your mind while cutting.

Thanks for the tip, il do some free hand reconnecting/photoshop trial and error and see how it goes..

Re: IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates- *Video Tutorial Link in first Post*

My first time posting on the Rpf. I have been building an Iron man suit for the past 6 or 7 months now on and off and have so far made most of it and am soon going to be resin coating it.

9348155236_6b4a963a77_h.jpg

I used a 5mm thick LD45 plastazote foam which I bought in rolls and were quite cheap. This was easy to cut and didn't really need heating into shape. Also, in some places I used some corrugated cardboard where pieces were meant to be flat to provided extra rigidity, such as the thighs(as shown in the image)

Now that I am moving on to the resin coating I was looking for a cheap resin that will work. Can anyone help with this?

Re: IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates- *Video Tutorial Link in first Post*

hi, ive watched all your videos on youtube and im really really keen to make my own suit. this is the first time ive done something like this so im tossing up whether i should make one out of foam or resin, fiberglass and putty or if i should make some parts out of foam and others out of resin, any tips for a first timer?

Re: IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates- *Video Tutorial Link in first Post*

I am using the foam method and am going to cover it with resin to make it rigid. This is by far the easiest method and less time consuming however you get a slightly worse finish on it. If you do put in a bit more time sanding you can get a better finish though.

Using the paper and fiberglass method is more time consuming to get to the final product and expensive but you do get a much more durable suit and a slightly better finish. I guess its based on how much time and money your willing to put in to it will affect your method of choice.

I've almost build the whole suit out of foam and its only cost me around £50 to get to that point and the resin coat will cost around £100 more. The paper and foam route will cost upwards of £300 for the resin as you need more.

Hope this helps.

I think I'll try whatever gives me the best look, I do like the sound of the fiberglass/resin/putty method as it's not that big a deal if I screw up cos initially it's made of cardboard where as I'd be wasting the foam if I used it and made a mistake, maybe I'll try both, fibreglass for chest, head, etc and foam for moving parts like abs, back of legs, ect, I guess I'm just worried about screwing up the putty, it would be an expensive mistake

It doesn't matter which you use it, you should be able to use either. It just affects the strength of the material and some other factors. This should tell you the differences. Resin comparison - advantages and disadvantages of polyesters, vinylesters and epoxies . All of them should be suitable.

Hey Stealth I have a question, do I use the mark 6 parts for making a mark 4? Or do you have a file of just mark 4?

Mark 4 and mark 6 are the same, the only thing different is the chest and brace, and some color details in some areas

If your talking about the hand plates that is just an image file jpeg, it should open up in Picture viewer or paint on Microsoft not sure what you use on an apple.
