Not sure about the R1 version, but has anyone checked the dark slide of the style of Graflex camera that was used for Luke's hilt as a possible match for the A New Hope version (the little that is actually seen of it)?

Naa, the Graflex is a 4x5 field camera that uses sheet film. It has a dark slide but it would be far too large and they are typically a black material.

The Graflex 120 roll film back has a smaller dark slide however, but again black.
 
I'm surprised there isn't more information about this prop available. Though it was only scene for a second in the movie, it's a key peice of both movies and R2s entire story. If I were Disney I would turn this prop into a memory card and sell the hell out of them

I re-watched the movie today in the theater... And I think it is metallic material or at least metallic color (not white) to me... When Leia gets the data card: you can't see any white on the card... Hope this helps

Unless the builder cuts the slot the depth of the Radar eye is 23.35mm. Once the slot is cut i guess there is no limit to the depth ( within reason). My plan is to make an "intake" drive and the size will be determined by the size of the card we settle on. But it will be awkward if the card size isn't about equal in width to the slot... which i don't recall if card looked that wide.

Do you mind posting the measurements you are using for the card right now?
 
I pulled in the CSR RadarE model into SolidWorks. The dimensions here are accurate +/- 0.01 just due to the way I have my annotations set up in solidworks.
