Dawn of the Dead (1978)

A classic.

I really liked the remake, but the original still has that classic retro edge, it's just a brilliant horror film even after all these years. A very important horror film in fact, very influential.

Great soundtrack too.

Monroeville mall has newspaper clippings about them filming in the mall framed on a wall and it has a zombie museum in it. The mall's been remodeled so it doesn't look much like it did but that's not a surprise after 34 years.

Oh really? It's great that they have a zombie museum, I'd love to see some pictures of that!

Gotta love the 78' version, a true classic and some awesome memorable zombies without a doubt. The Airport Zombie will always be one of my favorites.

I love the original. It is by far my favorite zombie movie. One of the only times I went through the trouble of paying for autographs, the cast of DOTD, including Tom Savini.

I got a pic of the 4 main cast in a action pose, and they all signed it. While I felt odd having Tom sign a pic he wasn't in, he is a cool guy to say the least. However, Ken wasn't really that conversive at the con, it was sign, and move on.

Some celebs roll that like that, whilst others are very chatty and friendly. Good days and bad days like all of us, I suppose.

Nice score on the sigs, I'll bet that made a cool wall display.

To be honest, I think Ken was thinkin he was the biggest star of the group because he just got done doing one of the Rob Zombie movies.

Dawn of the Dead 79 is still my all time favorite zombie movie. Night kinda lit the fire of my zombie obsession but Dawn was the gasoline that was poured on it. I have a Mondo DOTD art print by Ken Taylor that is one of my favorite pieces and I also have Flyboy Zombie and Plaid Shirt zombie tattooed on my leg for my zombie leg sock.

Me, I love the original. The remake, I kinda dislike except for the production design aspect (the fact that they took a mall that was emptied and managed to make it look like it was still functional must have been a challenge for the production design department, the set builders and the set dressers). I like the original, but I like the original's director's cut a lot more (which I'm slightly bummed out, as I haven't been able to find a copy of it on Blu-Ray, which lead me to get only the theatrical cut, which I'm pleased with). Though the original theatrical cut was pretty awesome, the director's cut to the original film to me added more to the character and plot (one example is Fran's objection to staying at the mall after the close-call with the Hare Krishna zombie and Steven convincing her that they have everything they need there, with the closing line "You're the one who wanted to set up house." being the closing argument and put into context, where it doesn't seem to make sense in the theatrical cut). But then again, I prefer character and plot over the razzle-dazzle stuff.

But, I do agree, the original Dawn of the Dead is brilliant and should be respected for what it achieved (especially for these younger film school students who haven't seen movies no older than 2005).

I bought Dawn of the Dead on Blu Ray but I decided to keep my Limited Collectors Edition because I like how it has Directors Cut, Theatrical Cut, Normal Cut, and European Cut as well as a small excerpt from the Dawn of the Dead comic.
