Darth Maul Rubies Mask

You know a great way to make the horns that are soft and spongey and light like injection-mold foam but without the hassle of molds and stuff?

Crayola Model Magic.

The stuff is terrific. It's cheap (like 3-4 bucks for a packet with enough material to make 20 horns), easy to work with and air dries. I made my Maul horns out of it (back in 1999) and the whole sculpt took about as long as 2 episodes of the Simpsons, then I just attached them to a Woochie bald cap with a dollop of hot glue (not while on my head!). I think I then blended the edge where it touched the cap with a little liquid latex to give it that "horn growing out of skin" look.

The stuff has a consistency of a slightly rubbery Plah Doh and comes in many colors at any craft or toy store. And since his horns are extremely simple, most anyone can sculpt decent ones by hand. Plus, since you aren't casting 8 (or however many Maul has, I can't remember) of the same horn and actually hand sculpting each one, each horn has its own natural features and don't look exactly alike, like in nature. Some of his horns are a bit longer and skinnier than others, some curve a bit more.... but really, it's easy. Just grab a small lump, push it flat on the bottom to your coffee table, pinch it in an upward curved horn shape, then drag a sculpting tool or even a butter knife up the sides to make the random striations going up the horns.

Once you are happy with the basic sculpt (which holds it's shape pretty well even before it dries), pop them off the table and push up under the flat base of each horn to give it a slight concave shape. Just lay them on a piece of wax paper of a smooth table to air dry and viola! Horns. Paint 'em up and ge play.

Semi-random question.. Does anyone have any images of Ray Park being made up?
