Darth Maul Rubies Mask

Folks

I have a Darth maul Rubies mask, it's made of latex and this is the first problem. If I put it on, then my face sweats badly and the smell of the latex just knocks me out. Is there anything I can do to help me wear this mask for long periods of time (90 mins for trooping)?

Thanks

Agreed. Even if you don't want to shave your head, at least get the Darth Maul Rubies Bald cap. That'll look a whole lot better than a rubber mask.

I third that. Personally, if I saw a guy trooping as Maul in a latex mask, I'd point and laugh. Get some makeup. Covering your whole head in latex can't be good.

there's a guy in our area that has a 3/4 mask for maul, so he does the makeup on his chin. I think it looks awesome.

I would say go with the make-up and half bald cap. Wearing a latex Rubies mask next to a 501st approved trooper is imho not a good way to go. If I saw you walking by, I would say to the trooper's....who let that "short bus guy troop with you, and where is his helmet?":)

I'm a purest when it comes to Maul. I say just shave the hair. It'll grow back. I've grown mine out plenty of times. Mine is shoulder length for the Joker but after Halloween I'm gonna chop it all off so I can go Maul. There's just something uber cool when someone THINKS it's a mask feels your scalp and feels the slight stubble. That and chicks dig a guy with a bald head. Buzz it then shave the rest off with a razor. Do it at least a day in advance and if you've NEVER shaved your head do it a week in advance to let your scalp get used to it. I MAY have some extra horns laying around here somewhere.

Yeah dude best thing to do would be to not wear the mask.
The latex regardless would just cause you to sweat like mad - ive been there with masks wearing one in excess of a few hours (unrelated costume).
I only ever reserve a mask for something quick and last minute when i dont have the applications for the costume ie for maul horns and makeup and time for applying them/ assisteance to do so.
Try and build up somehting nice get a template and have someone paint you up, for one you will be able to breath and secondly you will look a whole lot more awesome.:thumbsup

OK guys, guess it seems that mask was a silly idea... oh well only £15... live and learn..

I really can't shave my head, i'd look silly... not to mention all the ribbing i'd get... :lol

Guess the rubies bald cap sounds like a good compromise..... don't know much about it though... if some kind dark soul can point me in the right direction.... much appreciated....

And what about these face paints..... again same question.... UK stockist, any particular brand, exact colour..... are templates available for download from anywhere?

cheers

Has anyone made a silicone mask of maul? I seen the Freddy kreuger mask and they look amazing.

Yes, the quality of GT suits IS overwhelming :rolleyes

Sorry dude, just an opinion on a 501st APPROVED Stormie vs a rubies latex mask, which again in my opinion...should never happen together. Now if you said a Rubies costume parade, that would be a different story. Worlds would collide and such, like putting ketchup on a hotdog...these things should never happen:lol

As a GML in the 501st, I'm 99% sure full latex masks for Darth Maul are a big no-no. I know that is the case with any Palpatine costume anyway.

As for the horns, I heard of people carefully cutting them from the Rubies mask before with some success.

For makeup, I know Ben Nye has a line that can be set to be waterproof, that should also mean sweat proof.

Does Rubies make the Darth Maul bald cap anymore? I think if you have a hard time finding that bald cap, any good quality bald cap will do.

You will also need contact lenses to complete the look.

Make sure you can do contacts too. Can't have a Maul without the eyes either. Get ready for a good time with the makeup. At least an hour and a half to do. At least thats how long it took me.

The latex Maul mask will not be accepted (not in the UKG anyway), but all the Sidious/Palpatines I know do wear latex masks as it the only way to get the 'right' look.

Ray Park had his face painted & head shaved so that would be the best way to go IMHO. All the Maul's we've had here in the UK over the years have gone this route too.

OK guys, the latex mask is now confined to the bin...
I will seek out a bald cap..... and do some more research around this topic...
One and a half hrs to put the makeup on.. OMG.... surely there must be a quicker way of doing this? Regarding the contact lenses... I need to check if I am able to wear them or not... else this whole idea may just be a puff in the air then... :(

Sorry for the pile on, Mr. Bond, but yeah, everyone is right. Latex mask is just pointless for what is essentially just make-up (the same thing drove me nuts with people wearing big rubber KISS masks.... made no sense).

Make up is totally the way to go. But don't let the 90 minute estimate deter you. It really is dependent on 2 things: how skillful you are and if you have an assistant. When I did Maul (3 weeks before Phantom Menace came out) I had never tried it, but it only took me 30 minutes, but I have had a lot of experience with make-up, and I had an assistant for the top of my head. Often, you can do one side great and really struggle with the other side to keep symmetrical. If you have a problem with that, a good friend with a steady hand is extremely helpful. I think with one test round, you can really cut your time down to a manageable 45-60 minutes, even if you have no experience.

The other trick is to do your face red first, set it with a bit of powder to dry, then use a good liquid black make-up and a decent brush with a nice flat edge (I'd suggest a 1/4 inch wide flat tip).

Try it out, you'll probably love it. Also, a goo bald cap will really keep to your skull and I found that with the extreme contrast of the red/black pattern, it camouflages the transition seam edge of the cap really well and you probably won't even need liquid latex to cover it.

Go to 501stsithlords.com. There is a guy who made a set of stencils to airbrush the makeup on, and IMO that would be the way to go and cut the time down. Best resource of info for Maul I've found is that site.

If you haven't sourced out some great Maul horns yet, you'll find them on the above site also.

I hear Woochie makes a descent, already black-colored bald cap. That in conjunction with some resin horns and air-brushable make-up should work well and shave some time on prep.
