Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build - FINAL p.20!

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

I think I offered on Flickr but I have some window tint film I can send you if you want to give that a try. I've got enough for a few visors, and it would save you from having a buy a whole roll for yourself. Its what I used on my old long gone "highschool helmets" and it worked really well.

Are you talking about the kind from home depot/lowes? I'm just saying(not attacking you) the quality from the kind i bought was HORRID. it was merely a window sticker, and the adhesive fluid was nothing but distilled water. On top of that, it was just about impossible to lay it without air bubbles.... and then it was easily peeled off. As you can tell. I wasn't happy! :lol

BTW: Looks amazing Volpin!

Clearly! :lol

I bought mine from a local NAPA so I am not sure if its the same brand stuff as what you have, but I've had better success than what you've experienced. I will admit it took some practicing on some scrap plastic to hone the technique and eliminate bubbles, but eventually it was a matter of having a nice rubber squeegee, some soapy water in a spray bottle, patience, and a second set of hands.

Its not the best alternative, but I've worn one of Volpin's helmets with sprayed with night shades and I would say its preferable to that if done correctly.

I guess it comes down to how dark Volpin can get the RIT dye :)

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

I never had luck with VHT Night Shades. I blamed it on the product, but I know it was me :$ I'm too impatient which is why I suck at painting anything. Once I put a coat on it, I stare at it as if that's going to help it cure faster :eek
Then, I start poking at it and here comes the 2nd coat. Result = :cry
I already bought a big pot and 3 packs of Rit dye, but I won't be doing anything until next week. "BlindSquirrel" did some tint on PET and it came out great http://www.therpf.com/f9/daft-punk-interstella-helmet-wip-97512/index3.html

:love

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

Looking great Volpin. If you have any questions about the RIT dye send me a pm. I told BlindSquirrel about my goes with it.

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

How comparable is RIT dye to Nite shades or normal window tinting? I've heard of cases where visors tinted with Nite shades tend to be on the slightly, blurrier side, while tinting with film has considerably less blur, but you have to deal with air bubbles/unevenness. I'm still teaching myself propmaking, and some advice would help a lot!

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

would a welding face shield or tint face shield work..or would it be to short?

A 16" wide face shield is a bit too short. You have to go with an extended one in which case price goes much higher than the standard 16" size. On a pre-tinted, I believe shade 5 will be too dark. A shade 3 may work, but you have to test it which means you have to pump some $ into it.

I think Volpin is on the right track..... based on money and control over how dark or light the visor needs to be. My 2 cents anyway.

Shade #3 is what I have used on Fetts.. it can be dark in low light areas

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

Hey Volpin. Really nice work. cant wait to see this thing complete. Im also trying to recreate the Thomas helmet (along with half the country it seems ;) )

Im at a crucial point where i feel i'v made the helmet too small. i must have put around 40hours of work into it and i just cant bare the thought of spending more money and time on the thing if its going to be too small.

My helmet seems to be around 1 cm less than yours in width, and therefore the length, height etc are relative to this . This doesn't seem like much but Im sure if i were to place my helmet beside yours it would seem small.

My question is - Does your helmet seem perfectly sized or do you feel that it could be slightly smaller? around a cm? please say yes... please say yes...

thanks

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

I know I am not Volpin, but I have one of his Thomas buckets, and I know his helmet fits me great. But, my head is also 25.5 inches around and I am built like a football player. Well, maybe a retired football player.

I think a smaller helmet would work great for people with slender/smaller body types and builds. For instance, I have had friends try on my helmet who are very thin and have narrow shoulders. The helmet looks like a bobble head on them.

Hope that helps until the boss chimes in.

Also, you should start a thread! I know this site needs another Daft Punk thread like it needs an Iron Man thread, but I always enjoy seeing DP helmet builds :)

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

I've got one of his helmets, too and I'm slim and 6' 2" and it looks perfect. I think he matched the size of the real one incredibly well.

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

Cool. Thanks for your input. iv measured myself and the lower jaw part of the helmet is around 1 cm below my chin so it should be ok... fingers crossed ... Yeah i need to start a thread. Iv done it before when i was rebuilding my vw golf mk2 and it just took so much time to upload all the images that i just gave up eventually.

heres my facebook link to the build after 1 week if you guys want a look -

This is a shot from earlier in the thread. No ear pucks, but it gets the idea there.

I really love the scale of this build - far better than my previous Guy helmet, in fact. 1cm is a pretty narrow margin of error (in my opinion) in the world of helmet making. People come in all shapes and sizes. Raybans is built like a football player while Risu finds it works well even though he's 6'2. I'm pushing 5'8 on my best of days, and I still think the scale works very well for me.

If you're under by a slight margin, I wouldn't worry. Is there any way you can do a mockup pic of the helmet over your head? I found that the best way to check when I was making mine.

EDIT: I know its been a while since I updated this thread, but things will be getting back underway very soon. I'm still out on a few business trips, but work resumes next week!

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

yeah your helmet looks perfect there...

Im just going to go for it...iv Photoshoped it over my head and it does fit... its just i want it to look perfect... whats the worst that can happen? (images pop into head of me in three months, homeless on the street with no money and an ill fitting daft punk helmet... led matrix reading- ANY SPARE CHANGE) lol

Thanks for your response.

Also, on another thread that i cant seem to find you were saying that on some casts there were fish eyes due to small air bubbles between the silicon and master mold keys.. do you think drilling a small hole in each of the master mold keys would resolve this issue... just a thought.

Its possible, I might give that a shot but the fisheyes honestly aren't all that bad to deal with. When you mold yours (and, also, if you're using pre-made registration keys like I did) make sure that they're stuck on with a lot of thickened silicone so the likelihood of getting trapped air is minimized.

I'll probably remold the master some day, with the lessons learned from this mold. I'd like to make it roto-castable if possible. These molds get heavy...

would it be cool if i use ur blueprints to make my own helmet? if not thats cool too.

Go right ahead. I can send you the high-rez PDF if you like. Drop me a PM or email
