Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build - FINAL p.20!

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

Gaaaaaahhhhh! That looks amazing! Making me think of reverting from Guy's to Thomas' now! :(

Volpin you kill me!

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

how hard/stiff does the SmoothCast 65D urethane resin get? also i can NEVER find a price list anywhere for resins x.x

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

also are you using anything else besides the urethane resin? like fiberglass or....
sorry i've finished so many helmets, but I've just started getting into molding.. I'm still very virgin about the whole thing x.x

65D gets very stiff. As hard as any other urethane resin that smooth-on sells, comparable to the 300 I've used in the past, but easier for slushcasting.

I'm only using resin, no chopped fibers or mat.

Progress IS continuing, though its in the boring "google everything possible about LED multiplexing" stage. I'll be working on circuit boards soon, firing up EAGLE, which I haven't done since the Guy helmet build. Part of me is looking forward to that stage of the build.

That part of me is not recalling that it took 14 versions to finally get to final boards, because he's an idiot.

Fun times ahead!

Edit: I also made a pink one.

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

Did you see this on LED arrays?

Arduino playground - LedControl
You can get a 7219 for about $2.50 and with the arduino library above they're pretty easy to use. You can chain up to eight of them together and they do the multiplexing for you.

yep! 7219's are what I was planning on building around.

I had an earlier version of that article bookmarked, but this updated one is much better. Thanks!

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

Heya Volpin,

What size matrix are you running? I'm guessing 32*8? Single color or RGB?

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

8x40, single color (red)

Debated RGB, but I need to see past the LEDs and the wiring would block that pretty extensively.

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

Awesome build Volpin. Much to the liking of the original Guy Man helmet, this one is looking to be a true revolutionary piece, in a fraction of the time! :)

Were you going to sell casts of this piece? If so, I'm definitely interested in purchasing a few casts.

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

Hey Volpin, I got a cuple questions.
I love your work first off. I've been looking to your work for inspiration on some ideas I've been working on. First question aplies to that. I really love your Daft Punk helmets so if I use the same design and build process to make a DP helmet would that fall under the "recasting/selling" phrase in the member's guide. I don't want to do anythin that would steal from your build or expertese.

My second question is about the final mold or cast, what ever you want to call it. How did you, on the Guy helmet (and now on the Thomas helmet), how did you get the helmet details on the inside of the helmet? I haven't done any casting or molding so far so it might be easier than I think. But could you just explain it to me?

Thanks! Love the Helmets!

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

When does this one get sent out for chroming? Also,
how do you draw on owl?

Can't discuss sale of items on the public forums. Short answer is no, not at this time.

First question: Nope, not at all. I wouldn't toss all my work and ideas out there if I didn't want people to try it themselves. Knock yourself out!

Second question: Not really sure what you're asking. The master is sculpted, and the silicone is poured over it, making the interior cavity. If you're asking how its hollow, thats a process called "slushcasting"

Been working more with my programmer friend on the particulars of the helmet electronics. Still, sorry, no new pictures, but I should have some board designs knocked out soon.

Edit:

Chroming won't be until second week in March.

Here's how you "draw an owl"

Yes the slush casting. now what type of casting agents did you use? Like what was the stuff you made the hollow helmet out of? And how long did it take to set up?

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

Sorry can't figure out how to Quote
You mix up a small amount of resin, I'm not sure on this helmet, but his guy helmet used SmoothCast 300, you pour it into the mold and move it around so it cures picking up the details and you keep adding resin layer by layer until you have the correct thickness.

Check out this website:

Daft Punk Helmet by Volpin Props | Mold Making and Casting Materials Rubber, Plastic, Lifecasting, and More

The article I linked you to there is on the SMOOTH-ON website.
They specialize in sculpting, molding, and casting materials catered to a professional's demands. Take the time to browse there, and watch some other tutorials, it will give you a better idea of what is involved with the in-numerable aspects of the sculptural process.

More specifically, they featured Volpin's build log regarding Guy's helmet because he used their product effectively. (Watch the video) You can see (in detailed picture form) the entire process Volpin went through to make Guy's helmet.
:Which, with some trial and error Volpin's technique has improved in terms of speed and accuracy in execution on this particular sculpt.

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

Volpin, you are a prop god, sir. By any chance would you consider taking on an apprentice?

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

Could you possibly salvage the cured parts and use them like this:
Silicone's Recyclable Guys!!

That way all that rubber doesn't completely go to waste...?

that works but you got to make sure you dont mix "tin" based silicone into fresh "platinum" based silicone (tin and sulfur prevent "platinum" based silicone from curing)

you can put fresh tin based silicone on cured "platinum" based

also "tin" based silicone likes heat and moisture..it will make it kick faster
heat makes both kick faster.

tin fresh batch + platinum cured = yes
platinum fresh batch + tin cured = no (messy goo never sets up)

uncured silicone cleans up easier with denatured alcohol
