Daft Punk Guy Helmet: Final p.16, TRON p.20

Re: Daft Punk Helmet: V1 Final p.16, TRON p.20

Also I think its very smart of you to do the helmet from bellow. That should help keep the shape of the chin in check.

This might just be my eyes playing tricks on me, but I think the chin part of the jaw might actually be a little wider, but again thats up for interpritation.

The jaw might need some small revisions, but I'm content to make those during shaping the actual piece. I think if I can get the "footprint" piece as correct as possible, then the rest will flow more easily into place.

I really want a new Guy helm!

Me too! Anyone want to make me one?

So, my process has not benefitted over the past year or so from any elegance, but I'm hoping this will still get the job done. Thomas START!

These are the component pieces...

...which form this structure. The idea here is to sculpt the main dome of the helmet first, then add the visor and front chin at a later time.

I had a crapload of insulation foam laying around from earlier projects, and seeing as how I've vowed to never use spray foam again as long as I live, the pink foam get its shot at making the form. I'll be sanding this to shape once all the glue has set up.

Here's hoping this one won't take me another 17 months to finish...

Just when you start getting bored of everyone making Thomas helmets, Volpin comes along...

What I enjoyed most about these was the creativity and complexity of the lighting setup in the Discovery helmets, will you be doing that with Thomas?

It would be hard to get into all the nooks and crannies, but the finish looks like a job for Rub n Buff in my opinion, of Jango Fett costuming fame:

If not, dull aluminum or metallic silver might do the trick, which I see you've had experience with in the past :)
Rub and Buff is fine for movies but not very durable

Thanks to a nice high resolution pic from Art it looks like you guys were right about the recessed seam, and my idea was wrong.

I'm just glad we found out one way or another. In my mind it could have gone either way.

We're all after the same end: a super accurate Daft Bucket. So no need to be "wrong" since you were basing your idea on the best material we had available at the time. Better reference = better accuracy.

Volpin,
Inspirational stuff. I'm seriously considering attempting a Guy-Man helmet as a first sculpt and cast. I think I can make the earpieces with a CNC machine, then sculpt the rest. Do you have any advice for a first-time sculpt?

damn this was a fantastic build!
Been wanting one these helmets for a good while, excelent work. Inspiring me to really give it a go myself!

Incidently, Volpin, your advice in the Thomas thread about not using the expanding foam for modelling was extremely helpful!

honestly, where do you guys find all your reference photo's? these are simply amazing. i really wish i had them before i started on my Guy bucket. now i feel like mine is going to be terrribly inaccurate. Oh well, I'll probably just going to make another one in the future anyways.
keep up the amazing work everyone!
