Daft Punk Guy Helmet: Final p.16, TRON p.20

Re: Daft Punk Helmet: V1 Final p.16, TRON p.20

Volpin, I'm not sure if you saw these over on the Daft Club or not, but it looks like your method of setting the visor from the inside is actually the new look for Guy-Man "outside" of Tron Legacy as well. When are you going to come clean and just tell us your making the Helmets for Daft Punk now? :lol

Looks like the LEDs and the plugs on the bottoms of the ears didn't make the cut, the black circle inside the ear cones is now just gold, and those christmas colored wires in the bald spot and bellow the rear bar have been filled in similar to how the tron legacy helmet was.

I wonder if the Disney Prop department are making DP's helmets now, or maybe Alterian Inc is just taking a different approach?

So...who wants to pay (A lot of money!) so we can all get access to the full resolution Getty images?

Ehhh? EHHHHHHH? :love

wow this is really amazing! love the work!

did you vaccuform the visor? was it hard to make a custom shaped one way visor like that?

Re: Daft Punk Helmet: V1 Final p.16, TRON p.20

I also wanted to say, that although I've been a Thomas helmet kinda guy forever now, the recent changes finally make me like the Guy Man helmet just as much. Guess I know what I'll be working on after I finish my Thomas Helmet.

...Or if I have the money, I might just buy a cast off of Volpin and save myself another 5 years of effort. :lol

Re: Daft Punk Helmet: V1 Final p.16, TRON p.20

Speaking of which... start a build thread already! I want to see your progress :lol

I will once I get it to a certain point...which it should get to later this week, if I have some time.

Trust me, no one wants to see my progress more than I do. :lol

Re: Daft Punk Helmet: V1 Final p.16, TRON p.20

Awesome build Volpin, really. Now I'm really interested in building a Tron version of the Guy-Man's helmet after seeing the movie and this thread but... I need to ask one thing. Do you think 11" tall from chin to the top of the visor (as seen in the draw of the first post) is a good size for a 5' 8" guy?

Thank you bud and keep the good work!

Re: Daft Punk Helmet: V1 Final p.16, TRON p.20

I finally figured out what was with the Tron stuff. Was in cinema today and saw some signs up. Doh!

Re: Daft Punk Helmet: V1 Final p.16, TRON p.20

Omg that is so fantastic! Such work went into that my jaw is still dropped. Great job!
What kind of leather jacket are you wearing with it in the pics on page 1?
So cool awesome work!!!!

Re: Daft Punk Helmet: V1 Final p.16, TRON p.20

For those curious it seems that Ironhead Studios is responsible for the Legacy helmets...if not the current Legacy-styled helmets as well. Looks like we can all stop bugging Alterion. :p

My build was 14" tall from base to top for a guy thats 6'4" tall. It looks large on me, but not "giant." I'd say a good scale would be 12-12.5" or so.

did you vaccuform the visor? was it hard to make a custom shaped one way visor like that?

Yep, vac in 1/16" PETG. I only made the buck, the actual forming was done by BlindSquirrel, but from what he tells me it was a *****.

What kind of leather jacket are you wearing with it in the pics on page 1?

A completely incorrect one! Its just an old jacket I had laying around that I tossed on for the shot.

Volpin, in case you haven't seen it yet, here's a nice shot of the Legacy-era helmet being worn by the guy who did the lighting for it

Thats... very odd. A TRON style helmet, in gold, with TRON lighting? Why do these guys keep changing everything?!?!

The Guy Tron revision may be on hold. After doing some research, it looks like the entire design of the helmet has changed pretty drastically. I can continue with my mod of my mold, or start a wholly new sculpt. I started on some blueprints earlier last week and saw just how dramatic the changes really are:

So... trying to figure out what to do. Might wait until more images surface to give me more detail. In the meantime, I should be starting on this very soon, so this thread will once again be lively with progress:

Re: Daft Punk Helmet: V1 Final p.16, TRON p.20

Nothing like a Volpin update to start the morning off right.

I've been wondering, are you planning on making Thomas, and the new Guy-Man when/if it happens, to your client's proportions, or to your proportions?

Also, here are some more pictures that have surfaced in the last few days, just incase you haven't seen them yet. The first one shows that lip/edge on guy-man's helmet better that we've discussed.

Re: Daft Punk Helmet: V1 Final p.16, TRON p.20

I love the research you do Hayes!

Thanks for getting a shot of that inner ear area, I know how to best treat that now. Also, in that shot it looks like the rear dome caps are gold, and I originally thought they were silver or possibly even clear. Both good things to know.

Care to weigh in on these details? What do you think the "seam" is here (highlighted in red) - another builder and I were thinking it might be a seam from the "cap" thats more or less placed on top... but that seems like a really janky solution to me.

Also, on the green area - do you think they've filled in that area so there's no longer an indent between the ear "D" shape and the helmet frame? It looks flush in the images I've seen.

Edit: The next two sculpts will be more to the "average" person dimension, not to the original 6'+ size

Re: Daft Punk Helmet: V1 Final p.16, TRON p.20

Thanks for the kind words! I love your builds!

I guess my take on the red "seam" is that it looks purely aesthetic to me. Like, they decided they wanted to drop the wires for what ever reason, and then made this gold spot look as if it was just dropped in, like C-3PO getting his coverings so to speak! But in reality I think the helmet is just one solid cast now.

On that note, I agree that the indent around the D of the ear is gone, too, and now its flush. I still hold by my theory that the ears Thomas and Guy-Man's Human After All helmets were cast separately, at least initially, thus resulting in that indent. But I think your right, all the little nuances and curves seem to have been eliminated on this newer helmet.

I made yet another doodle on top of your blueprints as to what my interpretation of the former-bald spot area seam looks like to me, which also in turn shows how I think the rear-bar of the helmet is angled down, not up on this helmet.

Keep up the good work!

I see where you're going here. I would prefer not to make that indent on the entire rear area though. Not due to any complex building thing, but I just think it doesn't hold together aesthetically. I'm not a huge fan of the seam either, but I wouldn't mind a small scribe line. Its just odd they went through the trouble of smoothing out the ear seams and lower LED/Audio jacks, but went and added this silly line on the back.

Messed around with blueprints a bit more today, think I've got a good front angle going now as well as incorporating a lot of your design critique. The upper hoop has been moved back, and the back hoop has had its angle reduced. Also added the seamline. The shape to the right is my extrapolation of what the underside footprint of the helmet will be - in making my first one, I think this was the part I could have benefited most from having.

Re: Daft Punk Helmet: V1 Final p.16, TRON p.20

Because they hate us, and want to drive us crazy.

...at least Thomas' helmet doesn't seem to have changed, aside from the usual "Which ears will he have this time" issues.

As to Guy Man's new rear seam-line, to my eye it's not recessed at all. Perhaps it indicates where an access panel in the Tron helmet would have been cut out. (For the electronics) The seam looks completely level to me though.

And I definitely agree, the line around the ear pucks appears to be gone.

Re: Daft Punk Helmet: V1 Final p.16, TRON p.20

I'm not going to fight my recessed edge around the seam-line theory too hard since frankly there isn't enough reference material to say its one way or the other just yet, but here is a screen grab from the behind the scenes video. I think the way the shadows fall is telling of the shapes, but take it for what you will. Its not like one little seam is going to make or break this helmet :lol Also you can see what we already know, visual proof the visor is set from the inside.

shadowofthehelmet.jpg

I think you have pretty much nailed it with the revisions you've made to the blue prints, and I'm very impressed and pleased to see how well the helmet view from the front came out. The definition in the chin and the way the ears are angled are dead on. Also I think its very smart of you to do the helmet from bellow. That should help keep the shape of the chin in check.

This might just be my eyes playing tricks on me, but I think the chin part of the jaw might actually be a little wider, but again thats up for interpritation.

What do you think Nick? :)

Re: Daft Punk Helmet: V1 Final p.16, TRON p.20

What do you think Nick? :)

Well, the visor is definitely set from the inside. So that's settled...until the helmet gets revised again.

As for the new rear seam, we'll just have to wait for better reference material to pop up to know for sure. (I really hope there is some HEAVY Daft Punk content on the Legacy BluRay and DVD)

I actually think the chin on Volpin's schematic is pretty dead on, but the line drawn onto it makes it seem narrower than it is. Since the real deal will be a heavily filleted edge, it should look right.

All just my opinions though.

More opinions: I really want a new Guy helm!
