Daft Punk Guy Helmet: Final p.16, TRON p.20

Re: Daft Punk Helmet Build - FINISHED! p.16 for pics & vid

why do you need a resistor for the transistor?

The transistor is essentially just an electronic switch. You still need the resistors to limit the current supplied to the LEDs.

Well, you guys probably saw this coming...

I've started on a TRON version of the helmet, using my existing mold. The chin has been reshaped to be more angular, and I'll be cutting out the ear insets to match the smooth ones shown in the movie preview art. Work so far:

Concept art from TRON seems to show Guy's visor as being inset into the helmet from the back, with a more defined lip around the edge. The inset visor helps to reduce the visual "weight" of the piece, making it more scaled to my size:

You can see the channel carved along the inside of the helmet for the visor here:

And together with a few raw pulls being shipped this week. I tried mixing some of the sanding dust from the pink helmet into the resin for the purple one as I was slush casting. Turns out resin dust makes great filler for rotocasting! That one only took 2 cups as opposed to the 3 in the others. Nice budget saver, using otherwise garbage as filler.

Probably won't make the release night, but I'd rather do a good job than a rushed one.

For people wondering: I use tints to see how many layers I'm getting in my rotocast. The pink mold is gray on the inside for this reason. Also, when sanding the inside, you can tell you're getting thin when the color changes. Might be a weird trick, but it works well for me. Definitely makes cutting and sanding more interesting.

Sounds like pure genius to me! :thumbsup

In case you don't have them, here are some behind the scenes images of the helmets on set. They're not the best, but I hope they help:

Good luck! Somehow I knew I'd be seeing this from you at some point.

...and weren't you supposed to be taking a propping break? :p

Thanks for those! I was collecting a few, but these are perfect. The ear pieces seem to be a rather large discrepancy between this shot and the art thats been published. This seems to still have the ear "circuit" details and a flat cone, while the released artwork doesn't... strange.

Finding a matte pale gold paint like that is going to be one hell of a pain in the ass... Anyone got any suggestions?

Re: propmaking break - I suck at doing nothing. That lasted a day before I started getting twitchy

Well, if the Medicom 12" action figure is any indication, the helmet is actually fully silver.

Daft Punk + TRON + MEDICOM = Must Have Toys | Lost In A Supermarket

The question then becomes whether it is designed to replicate how the helmet appears on screen, or how it appears in real life. Because color correction alone could make a matte gold go all silvery.

I'm already looking forward to the Tron: Legacy DVD just in the hopes that there are behind the scenes features on the Daft Punk helmets and costumes. I'm pathetic! :lol

Awesome Pics Nick!

And I would guess the shot you based your "new" ears on was highly altered.

Either way I would love to get one of these in the near future. Just awesome Volpin. :)

Re: Daft Punk Helmet: V1 Final p.16, TRON p.20

It would be hard to get into all the nooks and crannies, but the finish looks like a job for Rub n Buff in my opinion, of Jango Fett costuming fame:

If not, dull aluminum or metallic silver might do the trick, which I see you've had experience with in the past :)

After looking over the new pics again, I have to ask:

Is it weird that I really like the look of the Pink Guy Man Helmet?

I can't put my finger on it, there is just something appealing about the combination of pink helmet and black visor.

hahaha, nice. I always wanted to know the story behind that...

The pink has grown on me as well, though it will have to go under some primer and light filler eventually... too bad.

Spent some time yesterday working on the rear dome cover. Unlike other version of Guy's helmet, this is a sort of shell that sits in line with the helmet hoops, not covered in wires. Hard to tell exactly what the color/texture is, but I think I've got some time to figure it out.

Still needs a bit of shaping, but this is a decent start.

Re: Daft Punk Helmet: V1 Final p.16, TRON p.20

Very cool and now i have a use for resin dust that is laying everywhere lol.

Re: Daft Punk Helmet: V1 Final p.16, TRON p.20

Lookin' smoof! :cool

It will look boss hog when fully done in silver. :love

Re: Daft Punk Helmet: V1 Final p.16, TRON p.20

Not to mention you are doing a bang up job on these helmets I literally had goose bumps when I saw this!

Re: Daft Punk Helmet: V1 Final p.16, TRON p.20

NICE. Can't wait to see more. I've been hoping you'd get around to this sometime.

Re: Daft Punk Helmet: V1 Final p.16, TRON p.20

So, finally registered.

Dean here from Germany, basicly stalked Volpin since I saw his awesome Replica Video on Youtube (when Engadget posted about it) and actually made myself the goal to do a Replica of the Helmet myself until I have my BsC in Civ. Engineering (which is in 3 years).

So as a total noob to this with nothing more but some pair of balls and 3 years of time and the willingness to learn, what would you guys advice me to do or learn to make good replicas?

In regards
Dean

Re: Daft Punk Helmet: V1 Final p.16, TRON p.20

I actually have a new interpretation of what we're seeing in the small truncated cone at the top of the ear in these shots.

What it may be is a piece of transparent material placed under the edges, showing the "interior" of the truncated cone, that extends down in a cylindrical shape.

Since I'm pretty sure that makes no sense, I made this little drawing to show what I'm thinking:

Screenshot2010-12-04at64902PM.png

It would account for why the promo image (even though it's a render) shows the truncated cone as hollow (perhaps the transparent section they had in their didn't have a high enough refractive index for it to be seen when rendered) and the on set shots showing the ears as flat. If you look at those shots again though, it looks like this may be what's going on.

This early though, it's anybody's guess what the real things look like.
