Thanks. I used a jigsaw to make most of the cuts. (Honestly, I didn't have the patients for Exacto knife work.) I used a drill with a circular cutting ring to cut out the eyes.

That's a great first costume! Thanks for sharing! I finally posted the patterns for mine, if you wish to "upgrade" your costume for next year! :) I'm happy that this thread is helping others to cyberize.

I really appreciate the complements. I am going to try to tackle Strax the Sontaran for next year!

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!! - WITH PATTERNS!!

Thanks! I just download your patterns. These are much simpler than pep, and for foam, that's perfect! :) I shot you over 5 bucks. I'll try and donate more at a later date. Thanks again.

Re: Cyberman - at last!! IN FOAM!!! - WITH PATTERNS!!

Mal just wondering..is your Cyberman chest/back piece all one piece ?

What I mean is do you put it on like a T-shirt or is it hinged or held together with magnets etc ?

Yes it's a one piece you bring in over your head and slip your arms through. You could do the magnet thing on the sides, that just wasn't my approach.

For the eye holes, did you use any fabric or lenses to hide your eyes?

I used a fine mesh black fabric, like a pantyhose, very very fine. I still have great visibility, but it's really hard to see my eyes unless you flash into the eye sockets.

My husband wore a black morph suite under his costume. That worked well for covering the eyes and for the spots that show under the costume.

I am a big Dr. Who fan and I am stoked for this project. Really like what you have done. Keep at it and keep us posted!

Just wanted to thank everyone, especially wondersquid, for this thread. I've been lurking for a while as I build my own Cyberman from JFcustom's files, and your discussions/photos have been a great help! The build is still in progress and the link is in my signature for anyone who wants to take a look. I just wish I knew how to get the pics to show up in the thread rather than those file names. If anyone has tips, please let me know!

I strayed into this thread as I am interested in foam pep and I have been a Dr Who fan for 30 years.

I am inspired.

Now I need to make a Cyberman helmet.

Personally, I am very happy to see more Cybermen being built! The builds are going well for everybody. I may have to break down and do the JF foam file myself before long since the movers destroyed part of my hard shell suit. Either way, congrats to everybody building a suit and I look forward to seeing many more invasions in the future!

I've only just found this thread. Excellent work!! I'm really impressed by the accuracy of the build and amazed that it's been achieved using foam.
I started to build this vesion of the cyberman a few years ago using pretty much the same techniques used by the team at Millennium FX but I got side tracked by other, easier projects.
I was lucky enough to visit the MFX studios for the first of many times in November 2006 when a lot of the screen used Cybermen suits had just returned from filming in Cardiff. During my visit I was given the opportunity to handle/examine the costume pieces, take lots of photos and even demould some of the helmet components from their moulds (this was at the time that Millenium were selling helmets cast from the 'hero' moulds, using the same cold cast materials for collectors).
Neill happily discussed the design and manufacturing processes used and gave some excellent insight into the ups and downs they had during the 12 week deadline for designing and creating the finished suits.

The photo of the inside of the helmet is of the hero helmet worn by Paul Kasey. . Each helmet was custom fitted to each performer as most of the actors they auditioned couldn't actually get the helmets on because of their tiny internal dimensions(the helmets, not the performers :$).
Interestingly the detailing on the back of the calf was added after it was discovered during costume fitting that Paul couldn't get his foot through the top of the lower leg armour so the castings were cut and the extra width created by adding the additional section.
I have more photos somewhere on my hard drive at home so I'll post some more if anyone is interested.

Here's a few more reference photo's for those of you building Cyberman suits.
Thanks to Jez at starwarshelmets.com for these.

The undersuit shows how the fake piping was added to the lycra undersuit only in the places it wasn't covered by the armour.
The groin piece was attached with webbing straps with plastic luggage clips.
The gloves were cast in platinum silicone, possible platsil 10 for flexibility.

Just thought I would chime in with my completed Cyberman build using Wondersquid's templates. This was my first foam build and... not sure how it compares to others, but I have 78 hours total in this thing. Patterns are awesome and easy to follow. If you're at all curious, all in, including razor blades, foam brushes, foam mats, PVA, paint, tube fittings, etc... just under $130. Learned a lot and can proudly say "I made it myself"!

Very nice work littlebrain! You should be proud! You've also shown me that my patterns aren't as insane as I thought they were, lol. I guess I should go ahead and make the nightmare in silver patterns.

Thanks archer and wondersquid! I am proud of it! Great suit and I managed to bang it out rather quickly. Patterns were great and easy to follow. When I get a few minutes, I will finish digitizing the patterns and sent them off to you Wondersquid. If you need someone to test your nightmare in silver patterns, I'd be more than happy to give them a go as well!
