I've been on sort of a one sixth scale kick lately and decided I wanted a figure of Mercury Astronaut John Glenn. Since the ones out there pretty much suck, I made my own. Custom sculpted and painted head. The suit is 75% custom made. Some parts came off the GI Joe Mercury astronaut, but not much.

Beautiful work. It looks like something you'd see in a museum.
Perhaps nicer than a museum piece.

Pray tell.... Where can I get mine? Can you give a little more detail about the suit? Where did you get the Nasa meatball at that scale? Did make the suit? What material was used. Is Gemini next?

Very cool and a great sculpt. I wish i could do sculpting like that. Guess i need to get practicing. Be great to get him to sign a display base for it.

It looks very dang good. So good you could stick it in Madame Tussauds (probably better than that even).

Only thing that is creeping me out a little is the smile as all the pictures I've seen of Glenn smiling have his mouth slightly open. Here, his teeth seem kind of clenched, like it is a fake smile because he's mad about something and the photographer said "smile anyway". I've only found ONE picture of the real Glenn smiling like that and he looks kind of creepy in that photo as well (so I guess by that, you nailed it). ;)

That was just a first impression though. As I look at it more and more, it is looking more like John Glenn. Weird how that works. It is certainly a most incredible looking piece IMHO. I would LOVE to see what you could do with a Freedom Seven Al Shepard (with that steelie eyed missile man serious look).

That's a pretty solid likeness! The suit looks fantastic too. Always exciting to see Real Space stuff get covered too.

Thanks! It's been a while since I posted this. Likenesses in 1/6 are super tough. I'm actually kind of surprised I got it as good as I did. The challenge is 2-fold. First, the sculpt has to be right, and then the paint job. Some of the early Sideshow toys sculpts are amazing, but the paint jobs are mediocre. Like the Iwo Jima John Wayne figure is actually a very good sculpt of Wayne's head, but the paint job is totally clowny. I repainted one for this figure and I think it looks 10 times better:

As for the suit, it's a HIGHLY modified hasbro GI Joe Mercury Astronaut suit. I used the basic fabric part, but dulled it a little bit because it was too shiny. All the hardware, gloves, helmet, etc. are scratch built. The patch I had custom made. It's woven like a clothing tag, which scales really well for 1/6 scale patches. I do have some extras if anyone ever needed some.

Well, your face paint jobs are certainly first rate! Those freckles in Glenn's face require a good eye to read, let alone duplicate (same with the subtlety of the hairline with Glenn's fair hair). That Duke does indeed look better than the original paintjob as well.
