Wow it has been a while since I have posted here at the RPF. Real life and other costuming adventures pulled me away, but I figured it was time to check back in. Sadly I never finished my Deadpool and Taskmaster builds as the molds were lost/destroyed in the process of moving and storage. I did however complete one of my child hood dreams this last year for Salt Lake City Comic Con, and that was to build a Boba Fett from ESB.


Just some pictures from a local comic shop on Halloween. Still a lot more upgrading to do, but I'm really happy considering I did it in 3 months and everything is 100% scratch built by me.

But enough side track. Now the real topic of this thread: My MMPR/Zyuranger Green Ranger Build.

I found out that Jason David Frank, AKA Tommy, is going to be at the upcoming FanX in Salt Lake City next month. Combine that with the release of the Legacy Dragon Dagger and Legacy Green/White Ranger Morpher and I knew exactly what I would be doing. Scratch building a Green Ranger helmet for him to sign of course. But that turned into...eh let's do the whole suit.


Start of the helmet. EDIT: Dung0beetle created the pepakura file I used, but it is the free one that has been running around the web for a while. It's not very accurate in details I found out later, but it gave me a great starting point.

My old '94 Dragon Dagger versus my new 2014 Legacy Dragon Dagger. The new one is fantastic! Die cast and 24k gold plate in places. Very spiffy.

At this point I bought some gloves and boots online as I did not have the time to make them myself. Maybe someday I will attempt it

Gloves with the Dragon Dagger for effect. Also my boots. No green anywhere on them yet.

The next stage I decided to try was I needed the red jewel for the crest of the helmet. Couldn't find one, so as any crazy costumer I decided to make my own!

Sculpt and casting box out of balsa/bass wood. Mold out of silicone rubber. First cast in mold. and first pull with aluminum foil backing and freshly clear coated surface.

So I found more and more reference photos, and I realized that my helmet STILL wasn't as accurate as I wanted it to be. So I slapped on some more bondo and got to sculpting.

Here is where it stands currently. You can see it has more of a "Dragon"/"Dinosaur" feel to it now with the ridges. Still a crap ton of sculpting to do on the front of the helmet, and I also need to do the teeth etc. But I'm hoping to be done sculpting in the next two days.

The plan is to have my scratch built Green Ranger helmet signed by Jason David Frank, and my scratch built Boba Feet signed by Jeremy Bulloch next month. Win!

Got a little bit more done last night. I'm not looking for 100% accurate with the dimensions, but I'm trying to make it look as close as I can. Finally cut it apart and put it on. It fits perfectly!


Going to get the magnets in today for the closure. Clean up the seam and add the teeth hopefully depending on weather.

A little more progress. Sculpted the teeth using foamies as a kind of make shift mold.

Once I got them on a did a quick sanding, and then painted a thin layer of grey sandable primer on the top so I could see the details better.

Looks good, but it revealed some more work that I have to do on the nose part and just adjust some lines and clean some things up. I am going to cast the "eyes" of the helmet in black opaque resin and the mold is currently curing or that. So the next few days will be spent bondo'in and cleaning up things so I can get ready for paint. So here it is with it on my head. It's sitting crooked because it doesn't have any padding in it, but it fits like a glove! I couldn't be happier.

And finally I did some proof of concept things with my fabric and foam for the Dragon Shield, cuffs etc. So here is some fabric glued to a test piece of EVA foam.

Best part is that the fabric is 18% spandex so that it stretches and bends with the foam as it bends so there is no wrinkling or tearing!!

Last post for the day! Got the cuffs cut out and painted. The paint color is actually in between the dark and light pictures. Dark room + plus bright light + super shiney surface= bad pictures.

Just need to add the gold trim at the top of the cuff, add the velcro or zipper for closure. Done. More tomorrow.

Didn't get a whole lot done. Lot's of pattern things. Testing out the gold trim of the cuffs.

Need to attach them after I get the zippers on.

Looking good! Damn fine job on the helmet. I also have my '94 Dragon Dagger and was thinking about getting the Legacy. After seeing your comparison pic it's a non-issue; gotta have it!

So not much new. Redid some of the gold trim so that it has the bevel'd edge on it now. And painted the boots.

Boom.

Tomorrow is going to be a helmet day and drafting the pattern for the body suit!! Win.

No, that's alright. I can check it all out when I get my own :cool. Keep up the good work, and sorry about your other builds. I was looking forward to seeing the UDON Taskmaster finished.

Not much to update. Been mostly playing around with materials and adhesives and patterns. But here is my helmet ready for the visor install and final final detailing. Just a few pin holes and then it's paint time. Also started to make my main shield. This is version one and I'll probably end up making another but it should work for a while.

I haven't even pepped the helmet and feeling a bit overwhelemed. Lol. Are you making the visor or is there a spot to purchase one for these kinds of helmets?

Thanks for the kind words! And I'm excited to wear this to a con as this is one I can put on and take off without help, unlike my Fett And the pep isn't that difficult to put together. The main area of issues are the top diamond and the mouth piece, at least it was on the one I used. Also you might have to add some details to get it closer to the on-screen version. But a little bit of bondo and elbow grease can make that happen.

I'm going to be installing the visor tonight actually, so I will make sure and take several photos of the process. I am using a piece of acrylic that I found at Hobby Lobby for about $3, and covering it with Dark 5% Window Tint for cars. I'm going to install it with hot glue temporarily, and then use epoxy potty to create a seamless edge on the front of the helmet. Then I'll take the visor back out and paint it all, then install the visor permanently with either epoxy putty or probably hot glue. I am loosely following THIS tutorial on the 405th for installing a visor.

So been kind of crazy.


Boots are done.


Got the shield done. It has some wrinkles and problems, but for the amount of time I spent on it I'm happy. I'll end up redoing it later I'm sure


Just the steps showing how I fit my visor into my helmet.


Testing some pieces. Shield is still missing the front to back connectors.


Finally the painted helmet. Still have to do the pinstriping and install the gem and eyes. But gives an idea. I know that the paint isn't EXACTLY accurate. But I took a little creative liberty with it I guess. Also the visor "lip" is a lot bigger than the shows. Maybe I'll go back and trim it later on. But I'm happy with how it came out for now. You are your own worst critic eh?

So I have to brag a little bit here.

Today was day one of FanX here in Utah. And I got to meet Jason David Frank and Jeremy Bulloch. And they signed my helmets! I'm still having mini heart attacks every time I look at their signatures. They are both super nice individuals and love their fans. What an experience! And I cannot wait to unveil the full Green Ranger suit on Saturday!
