Cubone Deadpool Build.

Hello RPF,

My name is Matt but I go by many names hah. The most recent being Porthos and Cubone. This is my first thread here on the RPF but I am a member of several others!

I have been a costume builder for 6+ years now but 5 of them were spent building chainmail, plate and leather armor for medieval reenactment and education at the highschool I went to. When I came to college I began experimenting with pepakura and all those fun methods that go along with it. I began with Halo builds and have build various Halo Helmets over the last 2 years.

I then shifted gears and began to build a Boba Fett costume. That is a constant battle as I keep changing my mind on how picky about details I want to be >.< But I am still currently working on this and my helmet is almost ready to be molded and cast.

But this was put on hold as I found a new love.

Dead Pool.

After seeing many costumes on here and online, and FINALLY getting to read more than 60 of his comics....I fell in love. Needless to say I went and bought some oil clay and began my first attempt at a sculpt. I am doing a more serious version with smaller eyes rather than the huge dinner plate sized ones.

So this is the clay sculpt. He is currently painted and awaiting me to get home from classes so I can mold him. I am super excited!

My plans for this mask are as follows. I'm going to make a so called "sock mask" out of a painters hood and the latex 1/2 to 1/4 mask..whatever you want to call it...that I will be casting. Once this is blended I will add fabric over the entire thing. My goal here is to create a flexible under structure that is WAY different than my own, but will hopefully still show some movement.

I am really excited to be a part of your community and I look forward to hearing what you all have to say! I will update this thread as soon as I make progression!

Well...I know that I am a newbie here and this is frowned upon. But I figured with my first post being so massive I'd update in a new one.

So after about 3 hours and a lot of playing in with it, I got my plaster mold all done! It's my first one ever, and I'm proud to say I only had one air bubble and no clay stick! Woot!

Isn't she a beauty? It's way late here and waaaay to cold to use my shop, otherwise I'd do a latex cast right this minute. But that will have to wait till tomorrow!!

Let me know what you all think, and I'll post updates as they happen.

Re: Yet another Deadpool!

Eek...I may get into trouble for this one but I feel that I have done enough progress to warrant another post.

So I got my first latex pull out of the mold this morning. It had been sitting overnight. It has a few imperfections but overall I am super super happy with how it turned out.

I trimmed it up and cut the mouth area open, and tried it on under an old ski mask I had just to hold it to my face. It fits super well and visibility is awesome in it. I took two pics in different lighting so you can see the definition on the mask. I also put a piece of white cloth behind the one eye just to see what it will be like once I have fabric in there. And it works perfect.

Let me know what you all think! I will be doing another cast here soon and that will be the one I paint and mock up with fabric.

Thanks for tuning in, let me know comments, questions and concerns!

Yeah I just know sometimes posting multiple posts one after another is frowned upon. So I just wanted to make sure!

And thanks that really means a lot. I was so terrified to try this but I decided to dive head first. And honestly it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Just take your time and be careful and you can surprise yourself with the results!

Re: Yet another Deadpool!

nah sometimes you may not get a reply for a few days and you can get dis-heartened and think 'no point in updating' but I just kept posting updates on my Freeze build and eventually people started taking interest... sometimes it takes till you have a few updates on the go to get the ball rolling :) and for me I like to see people updating as much as possible :)

I may have to give it a try some time, it's just a daunting task lol

Yeah I got pretty dis-heartened when I was posting updates for other projects on other boards. I got no love =[ haha But this build is so much fun and I love Deadpool so it's all for my enjoyment. That's what this is all about anyways right? :p I'll have to pop over and check your Freeze build. I try to update as soon as I have significant progress, but I try not to go overkill and scare the community off :lol

Yeah seriously you definitely should try it. If you do a latex cast it isn't to bad honestly. I paid...9 bucks for a block of oil clay. 5 bucks for a tub of pottery plaster and 16 bucks for a 16 oz thing of latex. so I was out 30 bucks if this went belly up. But I bet I can get at least 4 masks out of that latex I bought. And the learning curve isn't to high. The hardest thing is avoiding bubbles.

And a little teaser here....

Tinted Latex Trial number 1!

Re: Yet another Deadpool!

oh yeah it's all about enjoyin it yourself!! too right dude :)

ooooh so you have coloured it now! sweet, I did some coloured latex when doing a Wasp costume for my fiancee, it's great seein out it turns out once coloured....
Are you gonna attempt a full mask at some point? (not for deadpool, maybe something else?)

Yeah I colored it hah. I just mixed some green-black acrylic paint in the latex before I poured it in. But.....it turned way to green....aaaanddd it was WAY to thin. Made me a sad panda. So I'm mixing up a nice batch of pure black latex right now to try again.

I would love to attempt a full mask at some point. I need to get another head though >_> my last one broke when I pulled it out of this mold hah. I have no idea what I'd do though.....suggestions? :confused And I actually did think about doing a full mask for Deadpool. But I want to try and keep it as cool as possible so I can keep the mask on longer :p But I may sculpt one later on for kicks and giggles.

But it's off to start another latex cast!

Re: Yet another Deadpool!

This is looking good man! It took me forever to decide on how to tackle the black part of my own mask...All I knew was I didn't want it to be just flat fabric the whole way. I don't know anything about working with latex but I'm excited to see how your turns out!

As for you wanting to go with slightly smaller black areas around his eyes, I'm all for it! there seems to be no right way of doing deadpool as he is drawn differently depending on the artists. The smaller black areas do look a lot more aggressive.

I'll keeps my eyes on it!

Yeah I had no idea how to do latex either! hah I just jumped right in and I love it so far.

Yeah I have almost all the Deadpool comics sitting right next to me right now and it's true. Seems like every issue the style of his suit changes, the style of his mask, his equipment layout etc.

I tried to get the aggressiveness while doing a tiny bit of the expression. But I may have made him to mean :p haha.

SO I tried a test pull out of black colored latex and got this beauty. Now forgive my horrid hair-do hah. It comes out of the mold with a little bit of white residue on it. So I will have to wash the final one down with vinegar to take it off.

I'm headed to Fxsupply tomorrow as their store is an hour from my house :p Going to pick up some more latex and stuff. I really want to get the cast right so I can start finalizing it. I have three mask pulls and no mask yet =[

Re: Yet another Deadpool!

Make a red hood and cut the two eye holes out for the deadpool that would look awesome!

Re: Yet another Deadpool!

Yeah my plan is to make a custom lycra/spandex hood with cut out area that matches the black of the mask. Then I will fill the eyes from the back with a white see thru fabric. When all is said and done I should have a custom tight fitting mask with facial expression!

My apologies on the lack of updating....I got a gallon of latex this weekend but I have been swamped with homework and writing proposal letters for graduate school :lol

I have bought some fabric and stuff and Thursday is my day off...so tomorrow and Thursday are my project days! YAY!

I'll post more as I get more done.

Re: Yet another Deadpool!

What type of fabric are you using for the eyes? I am planning to use some sort of see through white fabric (Like the kind they have in those grim reaper masks around halloween) but I have no idea what it's called.

I think I will be using some sort of cotton spandex. But my honest advice would be just to go to a material store. And start holding up white fabric to your eyes until you get enough vision through it you feel comfortable :p Yeah I know it's weird but I think it's about the only way you can be sure.

Yeah I loved doing it haha. Specially when you start stretching out the red fabrics and talking to yourself like deadpool does...freaks people out a little :love
