Constantine: Lighter Project *UPDATE 04-09-2009 - Pics of brass parts are up*

Re: Constantine: Lighter Project *UPDATE 25-6-07*

I think it will prove to be a problem to do so because a metal filled resin becomes very thick. And since there are some very thin lines in the silicone molds (like the letters in the coin) i am affraid it would come out distorted.

You have experience with coldcasting, right? Maybe you can tell me a little more about the do's and don'ts and the possibilities etc?

Cheers,

Marc

tint the resin brownish (closest you can get to bronze color)
you can also "dust the mold" with powder brass/bronze-use a fine brush to make sure it gets in all those nooks.
hope that helps

Marc, I'll post photos later, but I cold cast my Dr. Who watch coin with metal filled resin, and it worked out great -- even with all the itty bitty lines.

Please do, Tiff :)

Problem i forsee is that some of the lines in the coin mold are very thin and quite deep. So my fear is, when slush cast (i assume filled resin becomes like a paste), that those silicone line will bend and therefore result in crappy casts.

Re: Constantine: Lighter Project *UPDATE 25-6-07*

Sorry if this is a stupid question and if it has already been answered... but I just got to thinking. Is this designed as a workable display prop or an actual sturdy and usable lighter that can stand the wear and tear of usage and flipping of the lid like seen in the movie?

Again... sorry if it has already been mentioned... :confused

Re: Constantine: Lighter Project *UPDATE 25-6-07*

Not a stupid question at all.

The cast brass version is functional as the brass can stand the heat and there is a real zippo insert in there. Ofcoarse it should be hadled with care as the hinges are not supposed to be on a lighter, so it is hard to tell how this lighter would stand everyday use like other zippos.

It is a collection piece in the first place, a functional one nonetheless, i just wouldn't recommend to use it as your daily use lighter.

The resin version i am also doing would be a display piece only, as resin and fire don't go together :D

on a sidenote, i expect to have the master done this week, all the panels and the 2 coins are cast and sanded and i just need to build it all up.

Re: Constantine: Lighter Project *UPDATE 25-6-07*

Very cool! I cannot wait to see the master all put together and everything. And I really hope those hinges hold up because I plan on using this bad boy to fire up some kools every once in a while :)

Re: Constantine: Lighter Project *UPDATE 25-6-07*

Annoying perfectionist that i am, i have decided that the recessed areas of the engraved pieces looked too rough, so i am now in a molding/castin process to make sure the recessed areas are also smooth.

hope to be able to show some new pics sometime this week,

Marc

Re: Constantine: Lighter Project *UPDATE 25-6-07*

Made a resin mold of the lid and body plates yesterday and sanded the recessed areas (which where now on top) smooth, looks so much better.

Tonight i am casting the new plates in resin to see how they come out.

Re: Constantine: Lighter Project *UPDATE 25-6-07*

wow, that worked pretty well :)

Top pic is a copy straight from the lasercut acrylic, second pic is from the cleaned up one. Note the smoothness of the recessed areas. This cast had bubbles on the bottom so you can see a couple of errors, but it does illustrate how well it cleaned up using the technigue i descriped above.

Re: Constantine: Lighter Project *UPDATE 25-6-07*

Looks great, still can't believe the detail and time making this project. This is very much appreciated by many on the board. Can't wait to get my hands on one of these!

OUSTANDING!!

Great job, my friend!
-B89! :D

Re: Constantine: Lighter Project *UPDATE 25-6-07*

would look better machined--sorry--just my opinion--I can go down to a .004 dia tool and can machine it on the actual brass

Re: Constantine: Lighter Project *UPDATE 16-7-07*

I think the path the project is taking is amazing and can't wait to see the finished pieces! It's good seeing such outstanding work being done between great members like Marc and Jmtwo and everyone else that's had a hand in this. Wouldn't change a thing! Stay on course...

Group Hug!! ;)
