Hi everyone !
For a long time I read this forum and I told myself that I too would like to share my passion with you.
My name is Martin and I am a cosplayer from Brussels in Belgium.
I started the Cosplay madness recently and I was hooked.
Today I'll show you the creation steps of my Scarecrow Cosplay. I presented it in the Official Cosplay contest at the Brussels Comic-con. I won the semi-finals and I finished in the top 10 of the final this weekend. I must admit that I'm pretty happy.
Here's the equipment that I used to make this costume :
- Zombie latex mask
- Brown cotton trousers
- Used raincoat
- Many burlap
- Red cotton shirt
- String (various sizes)
- Replica of Harry Potter hat
- Brou de noix
- Cotton Slippers
- Lycra gloves
- Brown leather belt
- Lots and lots of straw
- Foamboard
- Spray Painting
- White glue
- Cutter
- Needles
- Hot glue gun
- Foam Cardboard
I apologize for the mess in my kitchen. We have a small apartement and this is the only place I got to make my stuff without my wife screaming on me
So, I started with the mask.
Many of Scarecrow cosplay meant to sculpt burlap with glue and warm water but I don't like this technique because I could not add the details that I wanted in the mask.
So I used a latex Zombie mask and I glued burlap directly on the mask (I used a hot glue gun, it works perfectly). I left some apparantes parts of the mask as the cheekbones and teeth to make them look more frightening.

I then used a Harry Potter hat but given the size of the mask he was too small.
I had to cut it out and rebuild it completely. (If you do this, be carefull with the wire around the hat, by cutting it, it completely deconstruct the shape and re-create this wire was really difficult)
Here's a picture befor the recut :

After that, I started to age the mask.
I use a product called "Brou de Noix" here in Belgium.
These are small brown particules which mix in water create a brown ink.

When I was glad with the rendering of the mask, I glued the costumized hat directly to it.

And now, the boring part :
I glued one by one each straw. I used hot glue gun.
This is not a complicated step but it takes time.
I used this process for the hat, gloves and shoes.

Strating to look good.
I did not document the rest of the steps for the mask but I sewed some strings here and there and I strengthen the hat with burlap.
For the gloves, I used a pair of women lycra gloves.
I put them on, and I hot glued the burlap directly on my hands to keep the right form.
Be carefull, you can burn yourself.

For shoes I used simple cotton shoes I transformed with burlap. I also glued straw to the fabric.
I did not add attachments system. It is the ropes that hold everything. Same for the gloves.

For the rest of the costume I costumised second hand clothes.
For the raincoat I soaked it in a bucket of black tea. It ages very well the fabric.
For my weapon, I used this great tutorial:
I did not fully respect it. I cut the blade in two for more movement facilities. The foamcardboard is to light and can break if you make fast mouvements and I needed to act for my contest show.
I aslo made a Gas Can for my show. I made an custom paper with "FEAR" on it. It's a stage smoke (harmless). It's from JB system, I found it on ebay.
Here's are some pictures from the Comic-con :
What do you guys think ?
Don't hesitate if you have any questions, I would be glad to answer those.
