Chick flicks you'll admit to liking

Milf Lesbos in Tahiti. :D

But seriously, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Thelma and Louise yet; maybe not a "chick flick" in the traditional sense, but I don't think The Princess Bride is either. Regardless, here's my list in reasonably chronological order:

The Princess Bride
Thelma and Louise
Benny and Joon
Bridges of Madison County
Titanic (though I agree with PHArchivist-the love story gets sappier/less tolerable every time I see it)
Six Days, Seven Nights
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Love, Actually
50 First Dates (the only Adam Sandler movie I enjoy)
The Adjustment Bureau

If you were to ask my wife to name her favorite movie, odds are she'd say either Dirty Dancing or Pretty Woman. I absolutely loathe both movies, and if I never see or hear another nanosecond of either movie before I die it'll be too soon.

The Adjustment Bureau is a science fiction action isn't it?

It could be considered as such, but David Norris' (Matt Damon) primary motivation for defying the Bureau and risking everything is his love for Elise Sellas (Emily Blunt). So at it's heart it's really a love story--a romantic science fiction action movie.

So Brazil is a chick flick? Sorry for being a smart a$$. Couldn't help it. :lol

I have no idea. I saw Brazil once, and I couldn't tell you what it was about if my life depended on it. :unsure

:cool

It's about a man who risks his life for the woman of his dreams and tries to break free from the dystopian, bureaucratic government. Loosely based on 1984. I don't think it counts as a chick flick, nor does Adjustment Bureau. Too science fiction-y to be chick flicks.

The one I've really taken a liking to is You've got Mail. It just kinda grabbed my attention. Plus it had great dramatic Irony.

And it's got Tom Hanks! :lol

As someone said back at the beginning of this thread:

there's no such thing as "chick flicks" or "guy flicks" - just GOOD FLICKS and BAD FLICKS.

Quite so.

Last night I watched Mean Girls, which is aimed at sixteen year old American girls, whereas I am a 33 year old British man. It's hilarious*. It was written by Tina Fey, who obviously knows what she's doing after an already stellar career on Saturday Night Live, and it is at the very least greatly supportive of the above quote.

Likewise, my mother will tolerate action movies if they have a coherent plot and workable characters.

I think this is actually a great indictment of the preproduction process most films go through, in which hopelessly obvious sops are made to particular demographic that some artless twit in a $1000 suit decided was worth chasing. Ever notice how all the Hugh Grant romantic comedies produced in the UK had a token American, so they'd sell internationally? You don't need that stuff if you have a decent script, as The King's Speech proved. So many movies have all the stuffing knocked out of them by a script committee who are so desperate to produce something that won't offend absolutely anybody that the result is bland and anodyne to the point of being completely boring.

P

* And acts, perhaps against intention, as a great ego boost to men in general. We don't go around gouging at each other's souls with hooks like that. We just hit each other.

The Notebook is one of my all time favourite movies :)
And of course anybody that says Titanic is crap, or thinks themselves too manly to watch it and admit they enjoyed it, is just lying to themselves ;)

You kidding me? Half the time I suggest them. If it's a good film, we watch it. "who it was marketed to" does not enter into the mix AT ALL with us.

Funny side note - we just saw Young Adult (excellent film, by the way - a glorious character study of an awful human being) and the trailer for TITANIC 3D rolled. My wife said "I have never see it. I don't care to see it. I will NEVER see it". I asked why and she said something about pandering to women and eff this and sonofa that.

Apparently she is now making "I'm the only person who has not seen Titanic" into a merit badge. Kind of like my not having seen Avatar.

Where can I put in for those merit badges?

Titanic? I know how it ends - the damned boat sinks. And, the cast doesn't really do anything for me.

Avatar? Blatant environmentalist treatise, and I just don't need that crap (I already live in California, thank you very much.)

As a guy who at this point pukes at the idea of romance, I guess I'll mention that I liked........ Bridges of Madison county. Better written than any twilight crap you'll find today. The rain scene between Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep really got me.

6 days and 7 nights is apparently a chick flick. I didn't know that. Yet props to Harrison Ford and what's her name... I forget. lol

I don't know if this qualifies as a chick flick, yet if so, then I'll also include Cast Away. Again, the rain scene. Kelly finally succumbs to the feelings that her and Chuck still share. I would assume They still maintained contact, yet that very instant is probably the last time They ever held each other tightly.

Stella Dallas
Little Voice
Educating Rita
Mean Girls
Kiki's Delivery Service
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Flirting
Love Actually
Salaam E Ishq
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Wedding Banquet
A Taxing Woman
Tampopo

I personally don't understand why everybody raves about The Notebook. I thought it sucked, and being a gay man, that's saying something. Then again, I didn't care for Brokeback Mountain either. Take from that what you will, lol.

As far as other "chick flicks" I like, I'm going to stick with ones that haven't been mentioned yet:

Bridesmaids
Crash (not sure this qualifies) *
Fever Pitch
Forces of Nature*
He's Just Not That Into You
Kate & Leopold
Life As A House
Meet Joe Black
Over Her Dead Body
Pleasantville
The Proposal *
Someone Like You
Something's Gotta Give
Straight Talk
Two Weeks Notice *

*Actually, pretty much anything with Sandra Bullock.

I think this movie works for men and women because the characters and the actors are older, so they're not just a couple of fumbling 20-somethings who haven't really had any life experiences yet--their maturity immediately informs them of the potential complications that could arise from their feelings for each other.

When I returned to work the day after my wife and I had seen The Bridges of Madison County, I casually mentioned it to my supervisor. He immediately went on a rant about Francesca Johnson (Meryl Streep's character) "What a ****! She's married to a decent, hard working man, but when Clint Eastwood shows up..." The rest can't be published on this family friendly forum; suffice it to say the remainder of his comments contained a number of vulgar obscenities that were anything but flattering to women in general. I walked away thinking two things: First, that he had completely missed the point of the movie; second, that the movie had really hit a nerve with him.

Anne Heche. I think this one works because of the chemistry between Ford and Heche--it looks like they had a lot of fun making the movie, and it comes across on screen.
