Chewbacca ROTS (completed)

Re: Wookiee costume

The issue of height here in the photo referenced has two issues I can think of that question if Chewie is actually taller:

1. Perspective - Chewie is in foreground in shot and thus taller - all three are standing roughly in a circle NOT in a line (Notice how far Yoda turns his head towards Tarfel and not same towards Chewie). All about perspective.
2. All of this is shot and placed in digtal background - Tweaks could have been made with placement of all three characters (yoda model for sure) that could lead to 3d perspective issues as well (Also notice the black outline on each from greenscreen process).

just my two cents - would go with front on actor shots versus a perspective.

Yes. In the publicity shots (which isn't always the same person, for example the RotS Vader pics had the at that time continuity editor in the suit) they are the same height. But if you look at the databank, Chewbacca is 2.28 meters tall and Tarfful is 2.34 meters but if you look at this pic:

Wookieegoodbye.jpg

you can see the height difference I am talking about (Tarfful's actor is 6'9" or 6'10" depending on which bio you read and Chewbacca's is 7'3").

Check out the new foot system I've got going on in my Bigfoot thread, and think about real hair. I've had great luck finding it cheap.
Laffo.

Re: Wookiee costume

I agree on the perspective issue (I used to have a pic that had 6 people the shortest was 5' 2" and the tallest was 6' 4" and the entire group looked the same height) the thing is the actors are 4-6 inches in height difference (I've seen 6'9" and 6'10" for Kingma and 7'2" and 7'3" for Mayhew). Unfortunately I haven't found any pics that I can guarentee are the actors in the suits (I know for a fact that some (if not all) of the Vader RotS publicity shots wasn't Hayden so it puts in question any publicity shots out there.)

Re: Chewbacca costume (work in progress)

BTW Dougie Fett. All my research notes at the moment are at http://wookieegunner.livejournal.com/ and I have started a gallery at http://www.highlandcitadel.com/Tarfful/images/index.php if your buddy wants any help. I've also got serveral toys on order since I can't find any decent rear pics for the number of dreads. Once I have them I'll post the number of dreads and beads per dread on my LiveJournal account. I know some toys were made from LFL CGI files so I'm hoping the Tarfful toys will all have the same numbers.

Re: Wookiee costume

They are the same height in this pic!

Cool to see so many fellow Chewie makers around.

To be honest I don´t like any of the ROTS Wookies. Even Chewbacca looks to me like a zombie Chewbacca. I can´t understand why so less people have been upset by the look of the horror-like prequel wookies.
To me they look ugly and discusting. Same with their weapons.
Chewie has always been gentele, loyal and kind to me before.

There have been many more guys who hated the new Vader suit. (which I also do) and the horror - E1 Yoda.
From my opinion the art that was in Star Wars before changed to make way to the generic industie product. The influence of the "evil movie indistry" took over Star Wars in the prequels. And that is what they suffer from most, In my opinion.

I would like to know what you guys like about these new wookies.
I´m looking forward to hear your positive opinions about them. Thanks

Will keep a close eye on your progress, we don't you start a thread here too?

I too have ordered a Tarfful ref toy and I'm keeping an eye out for a Gentle Giant Chewie with C3PO.

Just personal preference I suppose, TBH if I get anything resembling a wookiee I'll be happy.

I think tha fact that the new wookiees are bulkier helps people like me at 5'11" hide proportions easier. The original Chewie is very lean especially his legs so trying to hide drywall stilts or any other lift is more difficult, my feet are size 10 European. So with making 12" lifts I'll need to bulk out the calfs to hide them.
Seriously though, Tarfful is way cool!! I just love the look, the armour, the dreads, what's not to like???? I'm sorry but Tarffuls weapon IMHO is one of the coolest there is.

I plan on making 2 masks, one slick and one windswept. They are not going to be necessarily ROTS,I'll try and achieve any look I can, I'll just wing it and see what happens. I am not going to get swallowed up in screen accuracy.
But the feet definitely will be ROTS, wider base to help stabilise my lifts.

I'm planning on building a reference site and posting it here and on RL for comments, along with something similiar when I start building (tenatively next month). Which toy did you order. I've got the Attactix, Collectable, Action Figure, Galactic Hero, and Kubricks coming. I seriously thought about getting the Burger King one just to complete the set. :)

Re: Chewbacca costume (work in progress)

Got some work done on the feet.
The lift is made from a plastic drum reinforced with dowels either side and foam, wrapped in duct tape. The soles are cut from a car mat. They give me 12" of lift. Easy to walk in and they bend naturally in the toe area.
They are very light too.

Re: Chewbacca costume (work in progress)

More progress on the feet, looking to achieve the same look as the feet in these pics.

Their feet have a much wider bulkier base than the original trilogy feet so it will help disguise the lifts.

The hair was latch hooked to a mesh, has that just stepped out of a salon look at the moment so I need to straighten it a little more and clump it up with some mousse/gel. This foot alone needed approx 3 packs of kanekalon hair, took approx 1.5 hours to get to this point.
Latch hooking is strangely addictive!!

Re: Chewbacca costume (work in progress)

Dougie, brilliant work per usual. Yeah, punching / latching hair can be surprisingly relaxing - go figure.

BTW, do you have a hackle? Generally does wonders for work such as this.

Kanekalon #27 strawberry blonde with a hint of #6 brown.

Re: Chewbacca costume (work in progress)

Looking forward to seeing this off and running again.

Your work is always to a very high standard.

The mask is what makes a good or bad wookie.

good Luck sir

cheers

Re: Chewbacca costume (work in progress)

Can't wait to see this finished. It will look amazing, I am sure!!

Re: Chewbacca costume (work in progress)

Kanekalon #27 strawberry blonde with a hint of #6 brown.

Just to reiterate my reasons for using kanekalon and not real hair.
Firstly it's cheap as chips compared to yak or human hair.
Secondly I have used yak hair on Thade and TBH there is very little difference between the two, kanekalon is slightly thicker.

I used an old pair of jeans as a pattern for the mesh trousers, made them slightly larger to accommodate the legs. Think I'll get a seamstress to stitch them for me, absolutely useless at sewing.

Re: Chewbacca costume (work in progress)

I really do enjoy watching Wookie build threads, I guess it's because of all the time and effort it takes to get the hair in. Always exciting at completion too! I Shall be watching this thread.

Re: Wookiee costume

I like your foot system. Is that a strap on the vertical piece to attach to your own leg? Look forward to the next update.
