Celebrity jerks?

Solo - his treatment of me came after I'd already given my money to his assistant. The money was already gone. Had I known he'd be so rude, I would have skipped him completely.

I hear ya. I just mean in general, especially after folks have already heard the stories. For that matter, I don't get why cons would keep inviting folks like that, or why they'd keep going.

Basically, I don't understand why, if everyone agrees taht the experience is miserable, people keep repeating it. What, like, David Prowse is suddenly going to say "I love all you Star Wars fellows. Thanks ever so much for wanting to chat with me about my time in the Darth Vader suit!" Something tells me.....not likely. ;)

Cool stories!

... Andy Garcia. He had in his contract to have a LearJet fly him to and from Van Nuys to San Berdino AFB where they were shooting his movie in converted hangar. He played a cop who was chasing a bad guy jumping out of the window of a hospital. Smoked a stogie on the way back to VNY. Really nice guy.

The film was Desperate Measures, also starring Michael Keaton.

Man, I forgot all about that movie!:lol

Once upon a time I was asked if I wanted to be an extra in Ray Bradburys 'something something'. A hundred bucks for standing around? Hell yeah!
So I was asked to pick up this girl on the way because she didn't have a car.
We're standing around the set of a circus, and it was freezing out while we pretended it was summer.

So I turned turned and saw Paul LeMat standing beside me.
So I did an exaggerated 'Hey Milner!!!' and everyones butt puckered because you weren't supposed to mention that name or something. But he just said 'hi'. Later he said it was freezing since he lived in Santa Monica. So I said 'tell us your address so we can visit'. He laughed.

The best part is the director came up to the girl and I and asked if we were a couple. She said YES for some reason, so he got us making out all night long! And I got paid! But the company stiffed me out of 50 bucks.

And one of the caterers was one of the most appealing women I ever saw. But I never got her name.

And I hate to burst everyone bubble here but i've written it here before - one of the - if not the biggest A-HOLE I have ever met has to be Michael J Fox - the guy is a total jerk - imagine someone with a Napoleon complex with money and a bad attitude. total knob

Really? All the times I've met him he's always been amazing, but going by whats on the board I guess thats not the norm?

Oh well..hes always been nice when I've talked to him

Jason Patric was pretty nice when I met him. I was an extra in a film he was in. Real intense guy during filming and scene prep, but when filming was over he stood there and shook hands with everyone, all the extras and allowed some people to get photos with him. I didn't have a camera and I didn't want to get a photo, but I shook his hand. Didn't think I should bring a camera onto a film set and tick anyone off. Another person I met on the same film was Matt Williams, the producer of Home Improvement. He was very friendly :) Also met Sam Shepard, he was pretty cool too. Didn't really get to hang out with these guys off set, but they were all friendly and everyone had a good time.

Short version: John de Lancie... Class act!

Long version: Recently John DeLancie and his son, Keegan, were in Philadelphia for a convention and stopped at a local computer store. A computer store filled with geeky employees. Geeky employees who all knew the de Lancie's were in the building ten seconds after they arrived.

Not wanting to bother them I took a quick look from afar, confirmed it was them and was about to head away when the parade of store employees began. Once by one they "accidentally" ran into him (and in once case I mean that literally) and pretended it was just a chance meeting. "Oh my, aren't you John de Lancie? Fancy meeting you here!)

Despite all the hubbub and the intrusion into the time with his son everyone who "helped" him that day said he was cordial, relaxed and not at all put out by the attention.

Don't really have any jerk stories, but here are a couple of stories about some good encounters.

Around 2000 or so I had driven to New York for my grandpa's 90th b-day party. My wife couldn't get as much time off work, so she flew up 2 days later. Her flight had just landed at Newark and we were walking out of the terminal through a revolving door, while Kevin Smith and a tall woman walked in through the revolving door. My wife didn't notice, but I mentioned he had just walked right past us. She didn't believe me and I swore it was him. She went back inside and I watched through the window as she went over and talked to him for a minute. She came back out all happy that he had signed an autograph for her son.
We were standing there outside smoking when Kevin came back out to have a smoke too. He thanked my wife for "keeping it mellow" and not making a big deal about him being there. We got to talk to him for 10 minutes or so and he posed for pics with us. He seemed like a really laid back cat.

When I was stationed in Germany there was a sci-fi con in Paris. I drove out with one of my buddies and we waited in a long line for autographs from some of the guests. One of them was Ray Park and as we got almost to his table, he said something to his assistant and got up and walked away. My friend and I waited for about 15 minutes, letting other people go past us down the rest of the line as we wanted to meet Ray. When he came back he was very friendly, apologizing for making us wait and coming out from behind his table to take pics with both of us. Very nice guy and seems to really appreciate the SW fans.

Had a very brief (a few seconds) encounter with Alicia Silverstone around 1999 on New Years Eve in Hollywood. It was the first time I had taken my wife to L.A. and I recognized her walking into the Roxy. I mentioned it to my wife as that's where we were going anyway. She saw Alicia and some friends just hanging out at a table and a while later they all got up to leave. My wife waved and said hello and gushed "You're so adorable!" :lol Alicia looked very shy and said thanks and wished us a happy new year.

Amy Allen (Aayla Secura from Star Wars Ep II) If you can even call her a celebrity, has been unpleasant every time I have ran into her at cons. I can't give any specifics, I just find her extremely unpleasant in person. There are a few other stars I can think of like that, but she is the worst I have met yet.

On the other side of things, Peter Mayhew, and Warwick Davis, are two of the greatest guys I have ever met. I don't just mean celebrities either, I mean, they are just great guys. I can't say enough great things about those two. I am always happy when I here they are going to be at a con. :) I have stood in line for both their autographs many times, and I have seen them both speak at cons a number of times. I have also road an elevator with Peter.

At CIII (I think it was CIII) Wall I was standing in line to get autographs, my Dad sat on a bench to wait for me. I was in line for a long time, and I forget who I ended up getting an autograph from. When I was done, I walked over, and found Warwick Davis, and his wife, setting with my Dad. No Sucrets, No handlers, or anything. My Dad just said, "Well see 'u leter." to Warwick, and walked over to meat up with me. After my Dad got to me, I said, "Do you know who that was? " And Dad said "who the little guy?....... NO, is he one of these big shots." I told Dad who it was, and Dad just said "Hm, he, and his wife just came over a sat with me, wall I was waiting. We had a nice talk. He seamed cool." :)

Jeremy Bulloch is pretty cool too.

Oh, and the guy that Plaid "Jason" in the horror films was supposed to hang with some friends of mine, and myself, a few years ago, after hours, at a cone. We waited, and waited, and when we looked in the hall, out side the room, the part was in, we saw him walking further down the hall. His handler, said "I'm sorry he has the runs, and wont be able to hang with you guys tonight. I'm just hoping the room has enough toilet paper for him." I wouldn't really call that him being a jerk, unless it wasn't true, though if I were him, I would get a better handler, that didn't put things so crudely.

"Friday the 13th XI: Explosive discharge." :lol
Or "Friday the 13th XI:Jason's back, with a Diarrhea attack."

Huh. Interesting. I had really great experiences with Amy Allen the couple times I met her. She flirted with my hubby a bit which made his day.

The prize for ABSOLUTELY BEST Celebrity encounter EVER (in my book) goes to none other than: Bruce Cambell.

He came to a book signing in Milwaukee. Small, local bookstore, supposed to do a talk for an hour and then sign the book (and the store made it quite clear: THE BOOK ONLY!). He was supposed to be there from 4-8. He didn't leave until every single person there got autographed what ever they wanted autographed. In fact, I overheard one person say they wished they would have brought their Army of Darkness action figure (around 7:30) and he said, "Go home and get it, I'll be here for a while." Not only that, he made hourly trips along the line high-fiving people still in line. By the time we got to him, it was already going on 11:00 so we expected his enthusiasm to have worn down, but we got a group picture and he made an AWESOME Bruce Cambell style joke at my friend's expense when he couldn't figured out his camera! He was class-act all the way around. We didn't stay, but I did go back to the store the following weekend and one of the guys who worked there said he didn't leave until about 3:30 and after which he called out "Who's up for some beer - on me!" Man - not only is the guy awesome on screen (and on radio - he's done several guest interviews on the local college radio station), but he's just awesome in person! We asked if he needed anything (soda or whatever) and he said "Thanks, but that's what I got chucko over here for..." (pointing to the store manager). I just couldn't believe someone would be that dedicated to their fans.

The runner up goes to: John deLancie (Q)
I saw him at Gen Con a number of years ago. I went to hear him speak, but didn't go to the autograph session (1. I had his autograph already and 2. I didn't want to waste time at a game convention standing in line for autographs). He put on a good, though short, show. Later in the day, I was standing in line to try out Mechwarrior on the brand new "XBox" that Microsoft was planning (yes, it was THAT long ago...). There was a long line and the guy that was currently playing had been playing for 15 minutes already. The guy behind me tapped me and said "You know, it'll probably be in stores by the time this guy gets done." I gave a chuckle and said "I know, right?" When I turned around it was John DeLancie. Standing in line behind me. I did my best not to be a 'fanboy' so I tried to avoid 'work' altogether. We ended up talking about how much he liked his PowerBook G3 that he used to play Starcraft. When my turn finally came, I only played for about two minutes and pretended I was late for another game (really I was nervous about playing a video game in front of him!)

The absolute WORST was Neelix
I went to a Trek Convention with Shatner and Nimoy. Neelix and The Doctor showed up to sign autographs. Everybody crowded around the Doctor's table but only one person every came to Neelix. All the while, Neelix was acting like an ass hurling insults and such at The Doctor. The Doctor, meanwhile, was polite, curtious, and friendly.

The rest:
Mirina Sirtis - okay, not much interaction and I was pretty young
Majel Barett Roddenbery - VERY nice! She made it a priority to spend at least a little time with every fan. I heard her answer questions from "Where's the bathroom on the enterprise" and "how much is your autograph worth" to "Thank you for putting your heart into carrying on Gene's legacy" and "What can I do to help with the space station" (she was active in lobbying congress to not cut funding to the space station early in it's development - I still have the flyer!) - all in a polite, funny, and enthusiastic way!
Michael Dorn - Great wit, very friendly
William Shatner - Total Ass - I saw him on two separate occasions. The first time he was at a small convention, but didn't sign autographs. After his talk a little kid ran up to him and wanted to ask him a question and he totally ignored the kid. He was escourted out like the President or something. As I left, I saw his limo pulling into McDonalds. The second time he was so placid and glazed over, I had to wonder if he even knew where he was. The only time he was ever 'animated' was when he was with Nimoy.
Leonard Nemoy - Friendly, but seemed somewhat distant (this was recently) - not really into talking about Star Trek, wanted to talk more about his other works.
Brent Spiner - Very friendly
Doctor Bashir - fantastic
Dax - smile, but didn't talk to the fans much, seemed like she was always talking to her agent or whoever was with her
Scotty - very friendly - total class act!

When I was done, I walked over, and found Warwick Davis, and his wife, setting with my Dad. No Sucrets

Some years ago back when the new BSG had just come out I was at Gatecon and I was helping a friend out at a fan booth in what passed for their dealers room and in there at their own tables were Herb Jefferson and Richard Hatch. Some time earlier I had made a couple of quick pics of them in costume as Boomer & Apollo respectively with a picture of their counterparts in the new BSG. I took it up to them to get signed along with handing a copy of the same pic and both seemed to really like the pics and one (forget whom, I think it was Herb) even signed it for free and (I think it was Herb again) was surprised that I could find an old pic of him and was asking if I could find more and we talked a little about how hot Grace Park is and something to the effect that he didn't mind having his character being recast as woman and one that looked like Grace Park.

Flash forward a few years I was at ComicCon, once again manning a fan table with the same friend at the meaznine level with all of the other fan tables and it just so happened that Richard Hatch had a table there too. Well, me and a bunch of the other members of our group were all dressed in (new)BSG costumes, mostly as Marines, and since he was leaving he asked if we would all "escort" him out. So the bunch of us all in black BDUs, airsofts, and full tac-gear "escorted" Richard out from the meazinine, through the dealers room and all the way out of the convention center. Very cool moment and he was really cool too, he talked to us for a bit before we began the escort and he introduced us to his partner who briefed us on what they wanted.

Another sort of cool moment was some years ago at Creation Stargate con where I, and several other members of the same group from Gatecon and ComicCon, got to be costumed volunteers at the con. Well, I got to pull security inside the room where Joe Flanigan was speaking and that basically entailed nothing really more than standing to the side of the stage and made sure that no one who meant went up to the mic got out of hand, asked for a hug, or tried to give a gift, etc. Anyway, I'm there in my full SG kit, vest and all, standing there looking fairly serious (my normal expression when in military style costume) when a girl came up and asked Joe for a hug and he said OK but she also had to give me one too, probably because I looked so serious. Definitely the highlight of the con for me, one of the rare occasions that I've actually got to be part of a noteworthy, at least in my mind, event that happened at a con.
