CARTOON prop question from Family Guy/Star Wars episode

Sorry to clutter the board but something's been bugging me since last night.

I watched the Family Guy premier and was really impressed on how accurate their recreation of the "sets" was. Some of the most remembered details were carried over and I thought that was really cool.

Specifically, the cartoon version of luke's saber was pretty right on. Except when Herbert or Obi if you want, went to fight Vader... he was using Luke's saber.
Now all in all I'd say the art was pretty right on except for that one detail... I was curious if it was done on purpose or just a goof? Anybody know or have info? I know that somewhere in Star Wars there was a part where there was some sharing of the stunt hilts in different scenes. Is this a geeky refference to that fact?

One last thing... anybody else almost bust a gut when they saw what character Meg was playing???:lol

I thought that when the light saber was limp was pretty funny. But I, too was supprised by the accuracy. Not sure about whether or not what you noticed was a mistake or not.

I noticed that too, but I just attributed it to simplicity (the Obi-Wan hilt is a bit more complex to draw than Lukes)

One of the other things I noticed, was Peter's stormie gun is a mix between a MG-34 and the "other" version of the Endor Rebel blaster. The stock and scope were from the Endor blaster, and the barrel was from the MG-34.

Which makes me think that they got their weapon models from the Ultimate Guide ('cuse they use the weird Endor blaster in that book, insted of the "normal" one)

Good, I wasn't the only one who laughed hysterically at that! :lol When/if they do the Return of the Jedi episode, my money is on her being Jabba the Hutt:lol

I really doubt the underpaid animators in Korea really cared one way or another. Nor do I think there were many people involved that pay that much attention to what each saber looks like or every detail of the blasters.

It's a cartoon, made by comedic writers and animators. Not accuracy obsessed prop builders.

Well, I think they ARE pretty obsessed, nonetheless.

And it appeared that a LOT of the FX/space stuff was rotoscoped (drawn carton style directly over each frame of the film). Which is kinda cool.

And notice how the Deatstar blew up old-school style (no rings)?

I think this is one of those "dude...it's just a cartoon" situations. They just drew Luke's lightsaber as a generic hilt.

I also disagree with a few of you.

The art was so right on - this had to be done by fans who paid attention to many details.

It wasn't drawn quickly to look like Star Wars - they did their homework.

Actually, I think they used 3D software models rendered as cartoon style drawings. That seemed to be a common approach in Futurama and I think that most of the major 3D software packages have plug-ins that do this.

I thought that the Falcon actually looked a bit like the Hasbro toy with the huge cockpit...easier to do with a 3D model than rotoscoping.

...but maybe I'm being a little...cocky?

Stewie Vader also had the Luke lightsaber, but with a red blade.
I thought that was kind of lame.
Although in the cartoon "everyone on Tatooine" had a lightsaber. The bug zapper one was a Luke model as well.

I was impressed that they actually got Greedo's blaster correct.

The lightsaber thing was an extention of Obi-Wan's joke that "Everyone has one of these" if you notice every lightsaber was Luke's. Darth Stewie's, Luke's, Obi's....even the Lightsaber Bug Zapper that got Watto. The only one that wasn't was Han's Cheese Lightsaber knife.

They paid so much attention to detail on every other aspect of the production and got it wrong on one of the most iconic sci-fi props in film history? It probably was a continuation of Herbert's/Obi-Wan's comment (when he first gave Chris/Luke the lightsaber) that "everybody has one" as has been suggested above by Jedi Mike, but it seems more like they simply blew it.

My feeling is that it was done on purpose. Seth Green is probably one of the biggest SW fans out there (don't forget, he's co-creator of Robot Chicken, which has done a lot of SW parodies), so I doubt he'd let something as basic as the lightsabers get through unnoticed.

WOW... didn't expect this discussion to go this far! But I think the geekiness level is well within tolerance limits for a prop board!

I was just thinking about it some more and I bet there are plenty of details in there that are just spot on.

If anybody feels like geeking out to the limit I would be interested to know if the opening battle sequence between the two ships has every single laser blast in the right sequencing... you know what... I bet it's exact!
