Captain America Shield from satellite dish

Did some major work today. Wet sanded for an hour or two on the shield to get it nice and smooth, then decided that it was the perfect day to finally throw some paint on it. So here are the preliminary results of the red, a little darker than I wanted...but I am going to polish it up and see what it looks like, I really like the depth of the red so I may keep it. The picture doesn't show, but I used duplicolor anodized red and it really lets you see the texture of the metal underneath...really cool! Also any tips on buffing the paint? I have never really 'buffed/polished' paint like this before.

Yeah, the dupicolor red is coming out dark. The Krylon X metal is dark as well. I lighting wet sanded mine, but a car buffing compound and wax give it the best shine. Just make sure to keep all of your strokes in the direction of the aluminum texture underneath.

I bought my sled on amazon recently (it's 15.00 cheaper now).
Another member had this idea on his thread and has been great help to me with mine.

There's a "lip" around the edge I cut off (just didn't look right) and bondo in the holes. It's about 26 inches diameter.

Great idea on the wire brush to the metal, I like being able to see the "brushed metal" look.

Yeah its still hard to get the whole 'brushed' metal look even with the way I'm doing it, but the pictures really don't do it justice...it is pretty nice when you see it in person. You can even see the texture of the metal through the red anodized I painted on yesterday!

Back again with a minor update, did the blue paint today, couldn't resist throwing the star back on there to have a look.(Note I didn't really center the star well in the picture so it is a little off) The paints came out a little dark, but I'm pretty convinced after some polishing and buffing that they will look pretty good, not to mention in sunlight the paints are much brighter than indoor lighting. I am going to touch up the paint around the inner ring tomorrow sometime.

Do you think a steel wool would give the same effect as the wire brush?

Good question, it may work, it may even work better. Unfortunately I didn't have any steel wool to try it out with. It might be something worth trying though! Let me know your results if you do, I might make a 2nd shield whenever I find another dish.

Attached the star with JB weld, I originally had it on there with 5 min epoxy and it didn't stay for whatever reason. I also cut the details into the star and I think they look pretty good (the flash drowned out the details though, sorry). I am going to take a break from this for a little bit and then return to it to figure out the back straps. I have a pretty good idea on what to do for them, but I'll hold off since it will be a busy work week this week.

Thanks for the kind words, I think I may order a sled and try my hand at one from that now that I have done this one. I also have an idea for the back strapping on mine, but will probably have to hold off a week or so before I can work on it.
