Thanks to "The Clone Wars" cartoon, my oldest boy (8 by Halloween) wants to be CAD BANE. What am I supposed to say?

Here he is!

As best as I can tell I need to build / acquire the following items:

Mask
Hat
Blasters
Holsters
Belt
Boots with Rockets
Pants
Chaps
Breather Setup
Mandarin Collar Shirt
Gauntlets
Undershirt
Overcoat
Satchel
Gloves

I figured I would start with the mask. If I cannot pull that off, he needs a new idea.

Started by building a foam head approximately the size of my boy's noggin.

I used that as my base to sculpt a basic duros head. It still needs work prior to making the switch to Mr. Bane. Be Gentle, As I have never tried anything like this before.

Please comment if you have any ideas / suggestions on my project. I have found a website that has a hat building tutorial and I figure the blasters and soft goods I can make. If you know of any patterns that could be useful or ideas about fabric types, let me know.

Thanks
Brian

Whow!! This is looking nice.

I wonder if you used some eggs for the eyes?? They look like eggs to me...Funny:lol

It's great to see you're doing a complete cantina mask version.... I like it!

Good luck!!

Re: Cad Bane (Kid Sized)

Cool. Bring the edges of the mouth out more. And i wouldn't even put a neck on the mask. It will be harder to put on and hotter for your boy. I would end the sculpt just were the neck and head meet. You can always use makeup or a stretch material like a neckseal to look like his neck. Just find the fabric first and paint the mask to match the fabric. And for the hoses on the cheeks i would go with the lightest and most flexible thing you can find, so it doesn't restrict the head movement. Can't wait to see it all together:thumbsup

Re: Cad Bane (Kid Sized)

I did use eggs for the eyes. I worked a little on him today (widened his grin, added some meat to around his eyes and nose). I think he is looking more like Mr. Bane. I also marked the area for the breathing device and did a little smoothing. As for the neck, I figured since this was my first time, I would have a neck and I can trim it off the finished mask if needed. Tomorrow, I am going to try to find a hose for the breather, so I can work on the attachment point.

I think the side looks pretty good, but something looks off from the front. Could it be the open mouth with no teeth.

Thanks

It looks nice!

I don't know which is better, to be the parent with a kid who is into Star Wars or to be the kid with a parent who would scratch build a Star Wars costume for you.

Re: Cad Bane (Kid Sized)

I think that I need to add a little more meat above the eyes and brow. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Re: Cad Bane (Kid Sized)

I dont know much about the character, but the nose/mouth area looks a little flat. If it was a little more curved, it would appear more natural looking.

Looks like a fun project

Here is what he looked like before I plastered him.

I got the seal of approval from my son before moving to the plaster phase. I removed the plaster today and I think that the mold should be OK. I am going on vacation for a week, so casting the mask will have to wait til I return.

Thanks

Re: Cad Bane (Kid Sized)

Well, I attempted to cast the mask in latex. I think that I used too much as the darn thing collapsed on itself before it was totally cured. When I tried to get it back in shape the latex tore.

The more I look at the pieces of the mask which I pulled out, I think the original sculpt may have been too big.

Am I on the right track about using too much latex.

Re: Cad Bane (Kid Sized)

What kind of latex are you using? It doesn't usually collapse on itself, rather than it shrinks unevenly causeing warpage. If you're using the latex mold builder stuff from michaels, that's not the stuff you want to use. You can read up more about latex at www.monstermakers.com it's a pretty expensive site, but it's still loaded with great information

Re: Cad Bane (Kid Sized)

I am using a brush-on mold latex (air dry comound for mold making and other brush-on latex applications). I got it locally from bitymoldsupply.com . I know a couple of other guys that use this stuff and it works for them.

I really think that I used to much (too thick) and it was not fully cured when it shrank away from the mold walls.

Re: Cad Bane (Kid Sized)

Here is the first pull from my mold.

It is a little big on the 7 year old, but should work with a little foam (here and there). Now to figure out paint and lenses.

The first pull of the mask is finished. Painted and Lenses installed.

Mask on me

Seems to fit about right on my son with padding in the skull. Fits pretty tight on me.

The second pull is still in the mold, I am trying to thicken up a couple areas.

The pressure is already on (from my son) to start building the hat.

Thanks

Re: Cad Bane (Kid Sized) - Mask Complete 7/2/2009

Looking awesome so far. Your kid had to flip when he saw the mask and got to put it on. Only thing that looks funky is the teeth, but I'm looking at it on a tiny iPod screen, what'd you use for those? Keep up the great work.

I think you need to break up the colors. That's your biggest thing. It looks like you painted it a solid blue. You need some darker tones (like a dark olive green) and some lighter (maybe yellow) to use for highlights and shadows. Look at pics of him and at your self in th mirror to get an idea of where your face is accentuated by how the light hits it. Try to achieve this feeling of depth on the mask with the use of other tones.

Re: Cad Bane (Kid Sized) - Mask Complete 7/2/2009

Thanks for the comments. This is the first time that I have ever painted anything like this. I do think it needs some highlights / shading. The teeth are molded into the mask. They need to be decayed a little.

I would have liked the eyes to bubble out a little more, but at least they are red and my son can see clearly.

Thanks
Brian
