Cabin In the Woods

Finally saw this turkey. Do we still need spoiler tags at this point? I'm figuring not, but will throw some in if anyone feels I'm spilling too many beans.

Dude...they SPELLED THAT OUT. Seriously hit us over the head with it. I was yelling at the screen. "We get it, enough already! You're satirising slasher movie fans! Now stop killing the good guys and come up with a creative ending...oh, you didn't and you didn't. **** you."

Can someone please let me know what the twists and spoilers were? I'm still not spotting them. That there's a big hi-tech base under the cabin and it's all a trap/setup? Seen in the trailer. Everything else is a trope, signalled way in advance.

Amen. Why the hell do they need the giant base containing the range of monsters? Solely to cover off the satirical element, yes? How'd it get there, though, and what'd they do before it was built? How'd humanity come to exist in the first place, if these giant, evil, ancient gods wouldn't allow it? We're not meant to notice because we're supposed to be so busy praising the film for being playful with horror-movie cliches, I guess.

I liked the cast and I wanted their characters (and the director) to find a better way. I'll admit what they gave us had its moments but ultimately I was looking for this to do something really unexpected - i.e. satirising (fans of) slasher movies without actually BEING one.

But it is one, with some window dressing but plainly an actual slasher movie in itself. The satirical angle does not take that stink off it AT ALL; in fact it's confirmed for me that I ****ing hate the entire ****ing miserable ****ed-up genre.

Surprised to find I'm actually feeling kind of angry right now. Huh.

I liked it well enough. It's the explanation behind every slasher/horror film ever made. I thought that part of it was rather clever, actually.

I, thankfully, never saw the trailer. I did see TV ads, and those facts were not revealed in those. So that was a big plus for my viewing experience.
 
I was a bit harsh. The cast is terrific and the dialogue and direction are tight. It played with the slasher cliches, guess I should give points for effort.

I was just so disappointed in it when we got the boobies.

You won't hear me say that too often. :lol
 
Well, I've officially fallen in love with this movie. Watched it twice last week. Spent some time freeze framing. Here's some wacky stuff I found (obvious spoilers):

The Stockholm "FAIL" is a burned down base. Looked like The Thing.
The Spain "FAIL" is a burning castle.
There's also a King Kong in one of the "FAIL"s.
The Japanese "FAIL" is your typical Japanese horror flick although this time the kids win and defeat the evil.

When they think Marty has been killed and they pull the lever, the complex shakes. The only other time that happens is at the very end. So the Great Ones know immediately that he didn't die.

While the office workers are having their party in the background Dana is getting brutally beaten. In one scene she vomits a ton of blood.

There definitely seem to be more monsters available in the complex than were on the Board. So maybe they populate the basement with only a select number of totems each time.

There's a couple bad guys from Left 4 Dead in the cubes.

They show the molesting tree twice briefly. Once in the big pullback of all the cubes and 2nd when the elevators open and there is a mass attack on the troops.

The security guard gets torn apart by Scarecrow Folk.

The Dismemberment Goblins show up in the background a lot doing what they do best.

Love the unicorn scene.

When the complex is overrun on a security cam you can see a guy holding up three signs that say "Trapped in a closet, Dragonbat has my scent, Send help"

There's a brief shot of a Reaver in the complex.

Too many movies referenced in the Army of Monsters attack to note. Evil Dead, Shining, IT, The Strangers, Hellraiser - all get major nods.

I also am now convinced Dana was The Fool and Marty was The Virgin. They go out of their way to say she has had sex. They go out of their way to say he never closed the deal with the blonde. She does ALL the textbook "fool" things in a horror movie: reads the Latin verse over objections, opens the door when bad guys are outside, stabs a "good" guy, lets loose the Army of Monsters. Meanwhile, Marty is the voice of reason throughout the movie. The last thing Dana says before the world ends is "I'm not even sure Curt has a cousin". I think that pretty much nails it right there.

and this I read online re: 1998. They say in Cabin that 1998 was a glitch caused by the Chem Dept.

I thought this was a brilliant explanation of the 1998 "glitch":

"The 1998 glitch is a reference to the 1998 film, THE FACULTY. The film has all five archetypes (fool = clea duvall, jock = the ginger guy, ***** = delilah, scholar = josh hartnett [some might argue he is the fool, but he is not if you've seen more than 10 minutes of the movie], virgin = elijah wood). None of the five archetypes die. The monster (alien) is killed by a home-made narcotic amphetamine cooked up by the Scholar (aka the Chem Department's fault)."

I would love to see a prequel. Give me Sitterson and Hadley with another scenario.
 
Yeah I hadn't seen any trailers before I watched the movie and was definitely surprised and pleased. At first I was hoping it was going to be a bit more like Jumanji (where multiple monsters/creatures would come out), but it turned out great. Other than the obvious "Why the hell is there a button in an unguarded room that releases the most terrifying creatures ever" things were handled pretty nicely. Prequel would be nice.

Actually, I figured that one out pretty easily.. the guards that come to capture them when they leave the elevator are the ones that would normally man that booth. They left the booth to try to catch our heroes.

What they should have done was left the elevator sealed until more reinforcements arrived to handle the two interlopers, and those guys should have stayed in the booth.

Did anyone pick up the DVD/Blu-Ray of this yet? I haven't found it at any stores around here yet for less than $20 for the BR.
 
I too thought trailer was good,excited about seeing it, liked the homeages to many other films ,even liked all the characters and it was pretty good to about 2/3 s way thru, then come on already,and whole basis was stupid ,didnt jive or make sense. honestly if demons lived below and they needed sacrifices to be happy why not wipe it out to begin with that was a plot hole you could drive a train thru, plus wasnt thrilled about how the could manipulate everyone spray majic dust to make them change there mind,CMON MAN!!!! and ending sucked, what a shame was decent up till then goapebilly
 
I saw it in Target 16.99 . I had already bought it for my virtual library on Fios
The offered it like 3 weeks early :)
 
I have never seen or heard anything on thismovie other than the title.
I thought it was mearly another killer in the cabin type film.

I threw this on my netflix list for something to see and got to watch it
last night.

I was way off on whatn this movie was even about. I had so many WTF
moments watching this movie and was kinda suprprised on what it was
all about. Definitly different for sure.

Wasn't good but wasn't overly bad either. I sat there for a while after it
was over thinking WTF did I just watch. LOL.

The movie was listed at 1 Hour and 46 minutes, but it was only 1 1/2 hours long. Not sure where the extra 15 minutes came from in the listing?

Really? The ending was the best bit for me. By that point, I wanted the world to end; it felt like the less unjust outcome. "Maybe...the world should end?" - yes! Exactly! That's how I felt the filmmakers wanted the audience to think; the fact they actually had the characters stick by each other no matter what, even though it meant the end of the world, really that was pretty enjoyable. Not a win, but the biggest '****-you' they could deliver to the demons.
