C-3PO Head

Greetings,

Thought I would start my first post with a few pics of one of two 3PO heads I sent away to get vacuum metalized. The one pictured here is my friends head. I still have to get around to putting the eyes in mine.

They came back looking very good but they have some flaws in the finish.

Now I just want to get an upper torso to make a bust. My friend has one already on the way for his.

Thanks for looking,

JD

Looks brilliant. I have a screen head that needs chroming, so are you UK or US based? I'd be very interested in finding out more :)

Same here. :)

They are one piece roto-cast resin heads, the neck disks are resin, and the head antenna is aluminum.

I am Canadian based and I had the heads done by a company called Vacuum Metallizing in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. They also have a plant in Buffalo, New York according to their website.

Thanks for the comments.

beautiful

did you get it chromed with the eye grills already in? or did you do those seperate? I'd be afraid that they wouldn't fit after chroming. :)

Clutch,

No I did not include the eye grills as they are too thin and would warp/melt in the process. I painted those by hand with a Titanium Gold color from Tamiya. I was going to use bronze paint but the Titanium Gold looked like a closer match to the finish.

That looks great. I have a fiberglass Cylon helmet that I would like to get chromed... any idea if they could do it and how much it might cost?

Thanks.

I don't see a problem with them being able to do it. I was quoted $60 CDN per rack with a minimum two racks needed to do a job. So it only cost $60 per head. You should contact them for more info and updated pricing.

Here is the link again for Vacuum Metallizing

Care to elaborate on the flaws? I'm sure this won't matter especially if you are planning on weathering him, but I'm curious.

Also, what condition did you give it to them in? Raw? Primed?

And what process did they use? Will they know what a 3po head is now? :)

What metals were used? Was it layers of different metals to help with adhesion? How many angstroms of each layer were put down?

The reason I ask is I am heading back to my old job in Scotland next month and will have access to an Evaporator which is a great vacuum metalising tool for this type of job so I am looking for some advice :)

Fantastic job by the way.

Cheers Chris.

Clutch,

The main flaws are in the gold tint finish. It looks as though when they sprayed it on it was a little bubbly and then the bubbles popped. Most of that happened on the backs of the heads.

To be honest I am not sure exactly which process they used.

They knew what a 3PO head was as when I was talking to them they said they have done quite a few before and at the same time mine were getting done they were doing a job for someone that sent them a head and body parts.

Chris,

:confused I am sorry but I have no clue.

Thanks for the compliment though.

I did send both heads to them raw though. Luckily the resin casts were very smooth. There are a couple spots if you look really close you can see my attempt at sanding shows a few minor scratches, but like I say you have to look really close. I made sure they were cleaned very well as to reduce the risk with silicon contamination.

My main concern was the resin wouldn't survive the process, but they came out unwarped.

Thanks

Well, the one of your friend's that you posted looks great.
Please post a few pics of yours, flaws and all, when you can, so we can see it as well.

Nice.

Are the eyes on your friend's also painted as you mentioned or are they another material?

Thanks again.
:D
