C-3PO and his new counterpart R2!

Trooper TK409

Sr Member
My friend Kris Sanders built this R2 and I had fun weathering him (something I've been dying to do for years). We were a hit at a recent black-tie charity event where R2 replied to people's questions with beeps and whistles. Several people thought Threepio was either a statue from Sharper Image or a real robot - "Look. It follows you when you move." Several 40-something female attendees, who had been drinking too much, thought Threepio was, ahem, programmed for more than etiquette and protocol. "Goodness gracious me." Definitely didn't see THAT coming. I got locked in one embrace and Sanders tells me that because of my standard position of my hands (being um, lower than say someone's back), it appeared Threepio was reciprocating the lady's... advances - yipes. It's not my fault, I can't see/feel a thing in this suit. Thankfully our friends came to my rescue but not before she bent both my pistons. As you can see they're both, standing "at attention", as it were.

Oh Dear.

Videos: the audio suffers a bit due to compressing it for the web - it sounds better uncompressed or in person. I'm using a standard trooper-type voice amp that's been gutted and mounted in Threepio's back grill. Still working on the accent.

Both are just beautiful. Excellent job on the weathering of R2. Who's 3po head is that? It looks like it's an actual movie prop. Anyways, great job.

Don't sweat it, Chris, she was just curious as to whether or not Threepio was "fully functional". :lol I'll never get over how awesome your suit looks. I was hoping to see it at Dragoncon this year, but couldn't make it. The guys at Lucasfilm did an incredible job on the plating. Artoo looks fantastic as well. The rust and dirt look very realistic. I like the scorch mark from where the restraining bolt was spot welded on. Looks very realistic. :thumbsup

You certainly got his voice down. That's great and adds the realism needed to make it even more outstanding.

BTW... let me know if you want to stand next to the real 3PO, our 501st unit may be doing an escort of the original R2 and C3PO from the American History museum to the Air & Space. Date and time pending.

Thanks. Well, at 5'10" I'm about 3" taller than Anthony Daniels, but I'm about 160lbs with a hulking 39" chest and 32" waist. The chest plate and back plates bolt together so it's snug, but not unbearable. The head bolts together too and below is an example of what I see from inside the helmet. Not only is the vision restricted, you can't look at people's faces, you have to look at people's chests in order for Threepio's eyes to appear to be looking straight forward (as opposed to gazing skyward and appearing aloof.) And if someone puts their hand out to shake your hand, forget it. If anything falls outside of this immediate field of vision, I'll miss it. The only visual contact I have with the outside world is through those two 1/4" black holes (Threepio's irises). That's partially why I sometimes appear to jerk my head around a bit. I'm taking mental snapshots of my surroundings while still trying to perform the mannerisms. I've already karate chopped several people in the face.

"Oh, I beg your pardon sir."

See what it's like to be C-3PO:

Having said all that... Being Threepio, and knowing you look like him on the outside makes any unpleasantness on the inside all worth it. The reaction from fans quickly evaporates any feeling of claustrophobia, discomfort, bad vision - it literally takes all that away.

Leaves me out. I'm 5"10 with a 45 inch chest and a 35 inch waist. Looks like it'll be another trooper in my future. :cry

I hate you.

That is the kind of visual that takes you right back to the childhood feelings of loving star wars. Its like the same feeling you get the first time you see a stormtrooper in person. I wish I was small enough to fit into a 3PO outfit. That has to be one of the coolest things ever. The R2 is frikkin amazing too. Im jealous.

Even at my 145 Bender weight, I will still never fit into that suit at 6'1"

Oh curse my lanky frame. I'm too tall. :(

Fantastic suit Chris- I'm totally jealous.
