Building my own Macrobinoculars

Re: Luke Macrobinocluars help wanted

Just got this Eumig Lightmeter.

Need to paint it black first though. But honestly I think it's too small. The real box is a bit bigger, about 1,5 cm I think. Still trying to figure out what part was used for this. I'm almost certain it's some sort of vintage photography equipment. I've contacted Elstree Props in the hope they know something more. So any help/leads will be appreciated.

Re: Luke Macrobinocluars help wanted

Looks big enough to me. I'm always looking for different weathering techniques. How did you get the paint to chip so wonderfully on your transition box?

Re: Luke Macrobinocluars help wanted

This one of the simplest methods known to mankind. After you spraypaint the box (let it dry first), you just use your fingernail and scratch it of :lol. Or use a knife or screwdriver or whatever is laying around. Then I gently went over it with very fine sandpaper (1200).
About the lightmeter. I've added some Kalimar parts to it and I think it looks better this way.
I will post pictures when it's painted and stuff.

Re: Luke Macrobinocluars help wanted

Lol! If I use something to scrape the paint off, I end up with a piece that looks scratched and not chipped.

Re: Luke Macrobinocluars help wanted

Did some work on the lightmeter. Added some Kalimar parts. Painted and weathered it. As I couldn't decide what looked better I made it possible for the lightmeter to turn around. This way I can do whatever I like :).

All I need now is one lens. The other one is on it's way. And the lens plate. I hope Russ will start his run soon ;).

Re: Luke Macrobinocluars help wanted

I've been looking at the 'darkside' detail for years, and still can't figure out what it is.
Here's a pic showing what appear to be two silver screws / rivets, and the box is quite slim.

Also, I believe the dial on the opposite side still has a clear plastic cover over it, seen in this shot from the garage scene. If you watch it in slow motion you can see the plastic catching the light for a split second.

EDIT: It was my old mate Killdozer that proved the bar sitting along the centre of the dial is offset, and not actually central.
If you remove the screw which holds the bar it will fall into the correct position while in the dial.

Oh this is very helpfull, thanks!
About the plastic cover. I wanted to use this but I destroyed it trying to remove the focussing dial from the camera .
Never heard about the centre dial (B&H) being off set though. Are you sure?
Two silver screws/rivets, that's the first time I've seen them. So something was screwed onto the original part I assume.

Edit:
just made this screencap of the macro. It isn't that narrow as you can see.

And you're right about the dial being off set. I've just checked it. I will make the proper adjustments.

The box looks quite fat in these HD screencaps.

The one at top left is from the Jawa scene and the rest are from the garage. I think the Jawa macros might be the stunt version as they look like the ones from the 'droid line up' press still where Luke is on his knees examining R5D4.

Re: Luke Macrobinocluars help wanted

Thanks for pics Marcus. The one from the garage scene looks quite thick. But that's all I can see unfortunately.

Re: Luke Macrobinocluars help wanted

I showed my wife these photo's yesterday. She immediately said: Oh that looks like a vintage flash.
That got me thinking. It is possible that this is a flash. They used a lot of flashes for the ANH props (lightsabers, droid callers).

A lot of vintage flashes have the correct shape. Check this site. http://www.rolandandcaroline.co.uk/agfaflash/agfaflash.html

It's a site with vintage Agfa flashes. I know the black box is not an Agfa flash but I think we're on the right track. All we need to figure out is the right brand.

Re: Luke Macrobinocluars help wanted

It's great to see this revisited.
Marcus, that is indeed the stunt in the Jawa shot.

almar - I really admire your tenacity regards this prop.
It does look as though you're on to something regards the agfa idea.

It has long been my belief that once we find the donor body to the stunt - and the lenses used upon it, we'll be pointed towards more details regards the hero.
Do you have an uncropped version of the colour picture you posted above?

EDIT:

Here's the best pic I have of the mystery greeblie.

I often thought (as Marcus mentioned in an earlier post) that this piece could be the Eumig lens cover, as it has the little protruding lip seen in almar's pic above, where the arrow is pointing.
However, the lens cover is plastic, and from the look of the pics the mystery greeblie has metal (or at least a bright highlight) along its edge.

Howard, if you give me your email I'll send them both. But I picked these pics of the internet so with a little effort you can too :).
About your picture, seeing the red dot makes me even more convinced that this is a flash. This red dot is probably the little light that lights up when your flash is ready to fire.

A little update for me

I got the eumig, bell and howell. I'm waiting to here back about the seagull from a freind that knows a camera collector.

Is there a pattern for the transition box somewhere?

Re: Luke Macrobinocluars help wanted

Time for a little update.
I've removed the Eumig lightmeter. It just didn't feel right. Instead I used a vintage Minox B flash. This kinda looks more like the original item they used.
