Buck Rogers Starfighter Question

I'm not sure if this has been covered already. I didn't find any reference to it, but was there ever a decal placement guide or paint guide released for the studio scale starfighter that was released about 6 months or so ago. Thanks.

Gus,

Decal guide, NO, Paint & assembly guide, YES.

To all asking about it, I cannot email it out, the file size is too big. Which reminds me, I will burn a disk of it all tonight and get it to Steve's tomorrow, we were going to try and host it for all of you guys who were asking soon.

BR SF Instruction/Paint

Sorry about the delay, been pretty busy and this just fell by the wayside.
Hers the pdf of the assembly and paint guide I did.

I nearly had my SF done for Starfest here in Denver this last weekend, painted as per the "I think" part of the guide, but with some decal issue and no weathering it wasn't 100% ready to go yet. I did get my acrylic bases signed by both Gil Gerad (Buck) and Erin Gray (Col. Dearing). I had a great time, and then I showed Gil why he was signing an acrylic base and pulled out my mostly done SF, he was blown away by it, and REALLY liked it a LOT even though it wasn't complete, and then a few REALLY cool things came out.

One, that he has HIS SF from the show, a gift from the Heartland Gang, complete with "Buck Rogers" on the nameplate under the canopy. And yes, I think my plead for pictures will not go unanswered, he said he would go and pull it out of STORAGE and get some shots for me, with the acrylic case SIGNED by the Actors, Crew and SF gang from BR off and from all angles! And yes, I WILL share when I get them!

Second, the colors of mine "damn near spot on" to HIS, and were as his memory remembers his looked like. I'll post some pics as soon as I get them of us looking at mine in detail. Had a great time talking to him about the kit, and he LOVED the SF as it was.

Erin liked it too, but HERS has suffered a bad fate, and was melted when she put it on a shelf and the heat register underneath it . . . well, according to her, it looks like "it went through an asteroid field or something!" I'm working on getting some pictures of hers too, for comparison and color check purposes. Same deal, whatever I get, I'll share with y'all.

Anyway . . . once I get a chance I'll post the pics and some pics of the 18" x 24" black acrylic bases I had made up . . . I'm working on a pseudo-stand of 3 posts for it, and as soon as I get it done I'll let everyone here check it out, but I only got three signed . . . but I'll be able to get you bases if there's interest.

Ryan

Thankyou for the instructions & paint guide. I really appreciate it. Also, looking forward to the photos of the original studio models. Again, thanks.

Gus

Cool stuff. You're way ahead of me now with the build so it will be interesting to compare our final colours.

So the ones the actors own are extras or screenused?

PS

I would very much be interested in a stand.

Gil said his was screen used, as did Erin, so . . . who knows. It wouldn't be surprised if they were non-screen used casts, but regardless they WERE done by the heartland guys at the time of the show and I think its safe to say they used the same paint etc as the real deal.

I'll let you know about the bases when I get closer to getting them finished, have a bunch going on right now and I'm waiting to see when I can get them finished.

Here’s some shots as it stands right now. You can see the rainbow decals are what I need to re-do. It’s still glossy for decaling, but will be shot with a dull coat for weathering and then matte overall when its done, except for the engines which will be flat still.

Heres some shots of the bases, showing off the autographs. Last shows a ruler, like I said, I did 18x24 so the whole SF fits with no overhand for cases.

Pics from the convention and signing/going over SF will Gil will be a few more days at best, my camera was dead and I had to have someone else take my pics.

Wow that looks great Ryan. You did an awesome job painting it. Congrats on the autographs, it will definitely be a great display.

Thanks for the kind words!

I was a little rushed, I was waiting on some info that never came, and so I got right up to the wire trying to make Starfest with it. I was pulling 4-5 hours a night on it after work, and then getting up early after things had dried a few hours and working on it more before going to work. Masking the panels was the biggest PITA, but since I used ALL rattlebombs (in the paint guide it tells you what to get) I didn't have to worry about cleaning an airbrush or running my compressor at 2 AM and waking the wife/neighbors.

I'm pretty happy with it, and once I fix the rainbow decals and dullcoat it I'm REALLY looking forward to weathering it and seeing it DONE!

I'm definitely looking forward to making the one I ordered once it comes in. Your guide is excellent and will definitely come in handy. Thanks for putting it together!

Should look really good once you've removed the gloss sheen and weathered it. My base happens to be a satin rattle can but all the other panel colours are matt acrylics that will need airbrushing. So I'm not too sure if I'll need a dulcoat yet.

My advise Ryan would be to ditch those rainbow decals and paint them on as they look wrong to start with. I make out five stripes on the originals not six. The dark red should extend from the end of the purple/pink red right up to the raised strip followed by an intermediate colour that's between red and amber. After this you have the actual amber then yellow.

Look on the hartland site photo that shows a closeup of the engine and the pic on the back of season 2 DVD.

How could you NOT offer to repair Erin Gray's for her!?!
You cad!

Sounds like they were both very cool about it - that's awesome!

It's actually a bit more complicated than that. I didn't realize this till I was able to see this photo (see attached). Those "rainbow" stripes aren't solid, opaque colors. It's as if they took a yellow band, divided it up into sections, and then sprayed each section with a little more red than the previous. Just a misting. Airbrush on low pressure, with thinned red color. The color on this photo IS crap. It's an old print and it went magenta on me. I can't post a high res version due to the posting lmit here, but you can at least get an idea of the technique. On top of that, it looks like the black stripes are actually Chartpak tape. (My Jim Key casting had those stripes in relief on the body.)

Hope this helps.

Wow, replicating that would be amazingly difficult. Especially with the fine degradation in color. The decals would be easier. Are they that off.

Well, repair isn't an option, its too far gone (from what she said). We'll see when I get the pics how bad it really is, but either way I doubt she'll just ship it to me and I'm not about to fly out to fix it. I did offer to do a build up for her to replace it, but that'll be pending getting an extra SF for it, and the photos of hers so I can get a match on it. I have he business card with info (direct line) to call her about it so we'll see how it goes.

RE: Decals, I haven't decided which way I'm going to go on it just yet, again now that I have a source for pics of the real deals pending, I'm holding off on progress until I can lock some things down more. No rush since I missed Starfest anyway and it look like I'm not going to make WF this year.

Great pic Gene, it's more evidence of only five stripes although I was expecting to use solid colours with a brush and then add pin striping tape. The Ranger shuttle also has the five stripes but I'm not entirely convinced they sprayed the reds/purple over a yellow strip. I think it's more likely that the previous colour is showing through. You would struggle to get a dark purple/pink colour with just red and yellow.

This is not difficult to achieve as once you have masked the sides spray a yellow strip that's wider than you actually need. When dry place a piece of card where you want the next colour to start and again lightly spray a strip wider than you need. Keep doing this until you get to the last purple/red.

Is there anymore of the ship visible in that pic Gene?
