BttF3 Doc Brown's Custom Scoped Rifle

Anyone ever make this steampunkish prop? I think it would look pretty sweet as a mantel piece, no?

It's a Winchester 1866 .44 'Yellowboy'

I swear we are so symbiotic on this site, I was just thinking about posting a thread about this gun to see if anyone can customize the scope! Great prop!

This gun is also called the "Yellow Boy" and can be found on Ebay for about $250

I've always thought this was the coolest gun besides a blaster.
I need to try to do this.

You can find a Denix version for under $200 I bet...

EDIT: Well, a Denix Yellow Boy that is... I think Doc's was a different model (slightly) from the one Brad posted.

This is too funny!
I had BTTF 3 on last night while I was working on stuff, and I was reminded again how much I'd like to make Doc's rifle.

I don't have the coin to make it right now, but I'll be watching this thread!:cool

My all time favorite character is the Doc and I will be watching this thread anticipating the final prop. I would love to work on it with everyone but I don't have the money for this type of prop project. Best of luck!

Sandman! Cool to see a thread from you here on the RPF. I've always thought Doc's rifle would be a cool prop to have. It doesn't look insanely complicated either like a few other BTTF projects. Hopefully we'll see somebody do an accurate one someday.

I Googled for quite some time to see if I could track down a similar telescope, but it seems to be completely custom, which in the long run will be cheaper than buying one, but it's gonna be difficult aligning the glass to make it work.

If this is indeed the model used, then it looks (per the film) like the modified the barrel to make it longer.

Yes, I've always believed the lengthened the barrel. It's much longer than your standard Winchester barrel.

I wouldn't be surprised if they used the 1866 with the big loop lever from an 1892 rifle...

The more I look at this gun (have the blu-ray in right now) the more I think they fabricated it just for the movie. It's definitely not a yellow boy, but it has a lot of aspects of a yellow boy. It also has aspects of an 1876 Open Top long barrel - most notably the octagon-shaped barrel, which Doc's gun has, but the yellow boy doesn't (it's a round barrel). There are also aspects of other late century Winchesters in Doc's gun.

I think I'm going to dig into this further and see what else I can come up with....

UPDATE:

Hours of searching has lead me to realize that the base gun IS in fact a Winchester Model 1866 'Yellowboy' 24" barrel.

Not entirely sure if the original has the octagonal barrels or not, but this version by Uberti's does, and so does Doc's. So that's a match.

Secondly, I know it is this model because the trigger and bolt pins on the outside are in the same spot:

Plus, it's the only octagonal barreled Winchester that has the same pins (that I have found).

Doc DID in fact extend the barrel:

See where the tube magazine weld point is? There's an extra 1.5 feet or so of barrel added. The base rifle is 43inches, and Christopher Lloyd is 6'1".

You can see here by the front sight where there is the SAME weld point. Looks like they just took another rifle barrel and connected them:

As far as the big loop lever, I found one for $64:

I'm sure you could find a better deal.

Still no luck on the telescope. So far, I'm still thinking it was a scratch build prop.

Any corrections?

I think you may be on to something with that .

The 1892 Loop Lever has the wrong receiver (though it has the correct lever).
