BSG - If you can't buy it, make it!

As far as I know, those bags are still unidentified. TCF was working on it for the longest time, and couldn't figure out any of them.

Greetings folks.....first time poster... but this thread is RIGHT up my alley!

I got about million questions....but first... I am building a kit car... and i am trimming it out with fun BSG stuff that I am incorporating... I'll post up more info on that later :p

Anyway... I jut got my TA-1 phone and it is perfect... but i am wondering if Moff ever finished his holder/base... If you did Moff, are you popping any to sell? Would be interested for sure!

SpyderDan/Moff: I see the Dynatel boxes pop up from time to time on that other auction site... were these really used for deck props? Which are more accurate?

A giddy newbie with a bunch of dumb questions... be patient with the late comer...
Love you guys work on the hall phones....this thread is SUPER!

Thanks for the help,

Cujo

Welcome!

The Dynatel box I have is an actual prop from the show, purchased from the original Propworx auction, along with a matching portable deck computer.

Moff Man's are replicas he made himself from Dynatel products, and he did a fine job!

As far as accuracy is concerned, the original box doesn't have much as far as added decals (just some silver tape), and is considerably more weathered. The portable computer does have a number of added decals, but none that identify which ship it came from.

Thanks Spyder for the quick reply! Do have a pic of the portable deck computer up?

Does Moff come online much anymore? I would be seriously interested in buying a compy of his TA-1 phone stand if would pop one....

Hey I am with Squirl on this one....that is d@mn cool prop.....but what do you think they made it from?

Are the keys about the numbers F-Keys? or special function keys? would love to take a shop at making something like this for my props for my kit car....

Cujo

GOT IT!

Went to looking thru a old computer museum website... and LOW and BEHOLD.

I found it...

Now look closely at the keys... notice the ] key? and the other keys with the additional white squares....

Also if you look really closely under the yello trim on the prop on the right, you can catch a hint of red power light....

good find! Now to make one... muahaha

hey spyderdan, I don't suppose you could give us some general dimensions of the case could you?

What I would be interested in from Spyderdan is a pic of the BACK of the computer.
Also its general weight.... is it just the TRS80/100 with a fiberglass case and some added ports... Or is the TRS80 sitting on something and the two are fiberglassed together....

seeing the back would DEFINITELY help with that....

I know this is BSG related, but it's more in relation to Caprica. Many fans know this as being Gorden's phone in "The Dark Knight", but in the mid-season finale of "Caprica", a cell phone is used to detonate a bomb. The cell phone is a Nokia 6630, the same that is used by Gorden when he received the text message about the police officer. You can see it at the end of the episode on Hulu: Hulu - Caprica: End of Line - Watch the full episode now.

The Dynatel box measures 11"x10"x7"

The portable comp is an actual TRS-80, inside a vac-formed 2-piece case with additional ports, jacks, switches, and lights. It measures 12"x10"x4".

wow awesome, thanks man!

Never realized how intricate the computer case is. Are we sure it's not an already found carrying case for the TRS-80?

I am betting the Trs80 Model 100 is sitting on top of a another piece of equipment in that box.... But what I wonder????

I have looked at all of the old computer sites I have and none show a accessory hard case like that....
and none show a accessory that the TRS would sit on top of.....
Answer one question....have ten more :p
However I did find a site with software, games, and all of the manuals if someone gets a working
model and wants to tinker with it...

Now we just have to pool our money together and bribe Spyder to take it apart to make molds and let us see inside :p

It does seem that there is another unit below the TRS-80. the side serial ports and on/off switch are real, and attached to the bottom unit, but other serial ports (in the handle part) seem fake (solid casts, no pins) and some of the jacks seem to just be attached to the outer case. The outer case seems to be vac-formed plastic with cut-outs, and at least the bottom part seems to have been formed over a found item.

It looks like it is all screwed together, but the screws are rusty, and I'm somewhat hesitant to try to take it apart. The plastic case seems somewhat brittle, but maybe I'll give it a shot later.

The Dynatel box surprised me at first because it was quite heavy. I opened it up and found it was completely full of various tools, such as amp meters, tape measure, electric screwdrivers, pliers, and such. It would be cool to have some BSG themed prop replicas (like Moff Man's Raptor diagnostic tool) to go inside it.

I am such a newb to all of this.... I get what spyder is saying... but I have no idea how I would do the vac-form case.... Where a good place to start for the NEWB to learn these skills? I live in nowhere Wisconsin but would love to learn some of this stuff....

Call me a nugget....

I figured these would be a great starting point for understand what Vacuum Forming is. If you already know, then proceed to the second link, which has various different tables that can be constructed. I also recommend looking at YouTube and typing in vacuum forming to see various other table designs. And I'm sure someone else with more experience at vacuum forming can also give a lot more resources.

CB2001:

Thanks for the heads up on Vacuforming... looks easy enough to set up and get working... and there are a lot of clever ideas out there... even saw one that used their kitchen stove :p

I will give this some looks and see what I can come up with....

As far as the case... the vacuform plastic looks to be thick... and I assume the plastic is already yellow...not painted. Wonder if I could just carve and glue up some polyiso foam to get the general shape of the case...do some dremel routing to get my smooth edges etc and use that for a form in the vacuforming.... or would the foam completely colapse under the suction of the vac?
