Re: BSG Agro Ship / Botanical Cruiser

Fascianating project, building a real 3D model based on a CGI model. It is the perfect demonstration of the flaws of CGI models, I know this because I build CGI models for a living. My point is most evident in the details,it is nearly impossible for CGI modellers due to the time constrains to get the randomness and interesting shapes one would get building the old fashioned way using model kits for details. That said I am loving this project, look how much better the unfinished model pictures look compaired the CGI shots. When it's done with the paint and the weathering it will be glorious.

I do agree with what you for the most part. That being said, The artist who created this CG Agro Ship (who's name escapes me at the moment) did an incredible job designing this model. Its not just a collection of separate objects 'floating' together as so many other CG models are. This digital model is as solidly put together as a real physical model. I have not had to alter any
measurements of parts or take creative liberties in any way during this build. I litterally just measure off the screen, cut and glue.
Well... OK... Its not exactly that easy, but I hope I made my point that this CG model is mindblowingly well thought out.

The four lights on each platform are angled inward to shine up onto the latice work that will eventually surround the lower portion of each dome.

The model is being lighted as it appears in the final season. I'm specifically referencing the second to last episode where Adama takes out his old viper on a final flight through the fleet where there are some excellent close-ups of the Agro ship.

Re: BSG Agro Ship / Botanical Cruiser

I live outside of Boston and in the Groton, CT area, there is a company that creates minatures for the Navy, museums and those who have very deep pockets (or won the lottery).
This build is as good if not better than their quality and they have a TEAM!
I'm floored.

Beautiful work, Jim!

Been a big fan of your stuff for YEARS now! Glad to see you're still around on some of the forums, as I've not seen you on RI for a while. I'm also really jealous that someone else is going to own some of your work. :)

Re: BSG Agro Ship / Botanical Cruiser

Can you put that in a copy machine, then shrink it down to 1/4105 scale, Jim? Does't have to inclue the lights at that scale.... ;)

Re: BSG Agro Ship / Botanical Cruiser

amazing, let me just stand back with the rest of the "jaw on the floor" crowd.
the sharp detail is just astonishing.

Is it in scale with the Galactica studio scale? How big will this be bumper to bumper when it is finished?

Keep up the fantastic work Jim.

Jim you've really out done your self here. This is looking clean, strong, delicate and beautiful. What a sweet build.

Re: BSG Agro Ship / Botanical Cruiser

Matching the CG models colorings and weathering was fun. This model is filthy!
Too bad the lighting in my pics isn't the same as the CG rendering. My camera alters colors and doesn't pick up much of the finer shading and panel lines.
I have a bit more to do here but I think it looking good so far.

Studio model is the first pic

Not looking too much like the Partridge Family bus.

Re: BSG Agro Ship / Botanical Cruiser

Amazing build of a cool looking ship.

Is the customer planning additional ships to his "rag-tag fugitive fleet"?

Re: BSG Agro Ship / Botanical Cruiser

Thanks, and I do feel there may be more rag tag models to come.

The electrical wiring has been stuffed in the model and today I'll be masking and coloring in these panels that cover the access holes.

I collect these black screws out of old video cassettes cartridges. They're extra-wide spaced threads make them perfect for securing plastic and wood.

One down, 39 more to go.

Re: BSG Agro Ship / Botanical Cruiser

That is an excellent idea regarding the VHS screws... I use ones for wood, they usually have a wider thread, but they are always pointed which has caused me to poke myself on more than one occation... on the bright side it keeps you awake when you are burning the midnight oil. :)
