Borderlands - Claptrap

I've wanted one of these little loud mouth robots since I first popped in Borderlands. With Borderlands 2 out now I decided it was time to finally get around to it.

Started with a base 3d model and exported the faces to AutoCAD

Now that I know everything worked out right I'm going to put more detail into it and cut it out of a thin basswood or styrene. The body is roughly ten inches tall without the wheel.

I look forward to seeing your progress. Are you going to incorporate any kind of electronics?

I'd love to put a speaker in him and make him talk, we'll see how easily the build goes first haha

Progress. These are from last night, I was too tired to do a write up at the time.

Having access to a laser cutter made this project so much easier.

I managed to get all of the main parts on one sheet side the top piece.

Painters tape test fit! All seems well. I'm hesitant to use super glue but I'm not sure what would be the best way to put it together. Any advice?

This piece (there's more, I didn't get a picture of it all) is one of the most frustrating things to put together as a test fit with tape. I ended up just saying screw it and gluing it together. Hopefully it works.

Here's how I left it on my studio desk last night. More updates later today!

"Look at me. I'm dancing. I'm dancing."
Please build that and send it to me so I can kick it across the room.

So a quick update. The last couple days have been spent carefully putting the body today with superglue and a ton of hot glue. It doesn't look pretty since you can see the mess of glue on the inside, but once I hit it with primer, that will all go away.

It looks messy but I promise it isn't :)

Success!

That's how it sits right now. I'm going to finish the bottom "flair" pieces tomorrow and do some of the addition detail pieces. The wheel, arms, lense and a few other parts are being 3d printed by a buddy of mine so those should be done soon.

Nice work, I've been working on creating a 3D file for a life size one. Though I've only gotten so far with it; this makes me want to get back into it :)

Do it! If this one turns out well I might make a full sized one to guard my apartment haha

I haven't had much time over the last week to work on it, just a few small pieces and more filler/sand/filler/sand. Better updates should be coming soon!

I haven't abandoned it, I've just been really busy with school and work. Over winter break I'd like to get this little guy finished! I'll be sure to post updates as I do

You simply must include a speaker that spews out his dub step song.
