Borderlands 2 Jakobs Pistol build

I have found that the best clearcoat for Alclad metallics is Golden Acrylic Polymer Varnish. It comes in gloss and matte. Unlike mineral spirit clearcoats, it does not dull or shift the Alclad metallic too much. I am using the gloss (mostly because that's what I have on hand), and will be using dullcoat on some areas to lightly dull the gloss.
This is fascinating. I'm learning so much with every post -- thank you for sharing.

Have you ever used Alclad metallics on metal? I'm thinking it doesn't make much difference because you prime it anyway? For instance, I have some aluminum shim I'd love to give a chrome-like finish to without plating. Any ideas?

Yes, if you are planning to use Alclad Chrome, you first need to put down a very glossy black coat, using either Alclad's black undercoat, or something like Testor's gloss black.

Thanks!

I just saw an interesting video on something called Spas Stix chrome, which appears to be excellent. I've got some on order, and I'll compare it with the Alclad and see which one floats my boat. :)

I got some of the Spaz Stix chrome as well as the Alclad chrome. They are quite similar, they both work the same way, applied over black in light coats, but they are slightly different shades of chrome. They are both equally nice, just a little different look.

I’m getting closed to finished with the Jakobs Smasher! It's all assembled now, I just have a little more wear and weathering to do. I’m at the same point on the Unkempt Harold here.

My Borderlands Jakobs Smasher is all finished! Please enjoy the photos. I have also finished my Borderlands Unkempt Harold, posted here.

Here’s what I have learned from this build:

It’s not worth the trouble to try to salvage bad castings. I spent way too much time filling, priming and sanding bubbles and pits. I would have save a good deal of time just re-casting the parts.

Also, at one point during painting, I thought I was being clever using kitchen plastic wrap during masking instead of paper. It stuck to the cured paint underneath, and pealed off big sheets of the paint, in some cases, right down to the primer. What a mess.

And, I have gathered from helpful advise here on the RPF, some pointers to help in my casting. I will be using this advise to starting with some new castings in a while, to build plain steel and wood Jakobs pistol, one of the Iron or Rex pistols. Thanks to those of you that have followed this build for the advice.
