Hello everyone! First time posting on the actual forums. I had been lurking the site and being active on multiple FB groups along with other social media, but never actually on here. I have been making random tidbits since I was maybe like, 9, but only really got into prop making around 5 years ago. The RPF has certainly helped a lot and the wealth of information and knowledge on this website is insane, and I thank you all for that.
With that short introduction out of the way, I wanted to show something I worked on a few days after BOBF came out but never really shared. The Tanto Holdout blade Din takes out during his Star Wars TSA check up.
TL;DR I made the Tanto blade from scratch. Here is the physical finished V2.
First, I started by getting that nice, top down screenshot from the episode, and using known measurements of his Vibroblade and IB-94 to get a rough scale for the blade. Due to how blurry it was and the quality not being top notch, I initially made some mistakes when making the V1 blade.
Originally, I had thought that the blade was pretty nice. It had 2 prongs to attach but as soon as the test print was done, I realized that the prongs would break too easily and that the file looked a tad too small.
I went back and ended up changing the attachment style to a rectangle slot and rescaled up a bit. At this point, it looked like this.
As you can see, the rough shape was there, but I knew it was not correct and that it did not feel right, but I was happy with it and I did not feel like I needed to re-do it again. That was until Luke posted this great image that made me re-do it the same day.
I decided to publish the V1 blade for free on Thingiverse so people could have something to print in the meantime while I worked on the updated and more accurate V2.
Here you can see the difference in thickness for the handles of the blade from the V1 to the V2.
After a few hours, I was happy enough and felt it was as close as I would get to the real deal. Here are the final renders of how everything was split up and how it compared to the V1.
But then, uh-oh! Celebration happened and The Mandalorian exhibit had everything on display, including the Tanto blade and the other little new tidbits seen in the scene. Does that mean I had to make a V3 now? Well, not exactly. The blade on display seemed a bit different, and even dare I say a recast, of the original master prop used. I don't know if it was the angle of the shot, but things like the middle channel and the handles had a bigger gap than the one seen in the episode. Something that I did find interesting, however, was that the "blade" was in-fact just flat and painted to give it dimension. I don't know if this is also a product of the display piece possibly being not the original one or if this was just to keep it safe and not have an actual blade or pointy object on set. Either way, it was interesting to see. (Thanks again to Luke for making a huge Celebration dropbox with lots of nice images!)
I think side by side, I was close enough. I was happy with it too.
Thanks for reading all of that! Hope to start posting more on here too.
