Blade Runner Blaster news: model kit version of the Tomenosuke Blaster is coming

Question, can these component parts be blued, would bluing be the way to go with something like this?

Question, can these component parts be blued, would bluing be the way to go with something like this?

I read somewhere on the Tomenosuke blog site that the metal parts on their finished Pro blasters were blued. I have one and it certainly doesn't look painted but chemically treated. They probably use a hot blueing process. Assuming that the metal is some kind of tin alloy (pewter or simaler) you can cold blue it with Jaxes Pewter Black formula. Regular steel blueing chemicals sold in gunshops probably won't work on pewter.

I'm considering getting one of these but not sure whether it would get through UK customs? I see you are a fellow Brit, have you done this before or do you anticipate any problems?

To be honest with you I was a bit uncertain but after messaging marv on the subject and talking to a few others I decided to bit the bullet and place my order

so is the metal composition the same as the finished pro versions or is the metal softer ? any ideads?

Although I have no first hand knowledge I would guess that the parts are identical to the ones on their assembled blasters, made in the same plant in the same molds and from the same materials, just un-assembled in kit form. The implication from their blog site is that they are providing the parts surface finished and ready to assemble (and color) rather than raw castings which require a lot of careful hand work, as with the Sidkit and Coyle blaster kits. According to their blog this has added cost to the kit.

I'm guessing it will be bare metal. People have used Birchwood/Casey bluing solution on that kind of metal with good results.

Hi there. New to the Bladerunner Blaster world but learning fast. I got my order in with Mune and found this photo on the Tomenosuke site:

It sure looks like they're thinking of using a metal barrel. My Japanese is non-existent, so I could be wrong about which version this pic is referencing, but I don't think so.

@Clutch - and anyone else with the expertise to help for that matter, I've had very little experience bluing metal, and none with zinc. Adam Savage mentioned in one of his videos that he got the perfect finish on his gun when he stripped the bluing off the Steyr receiver with white vinegar. Thought I'd give that a try but I'm not about to experiment on the expensive model parts.

I was considering ordering a sheet of zinc and cutting it into strips to practice on. Is there a fundamental flaw in my plan?

The only thing I can think of is that we don't have the exact composition of the alloy in the Tomenosuke. You will usually get a different mix of metals depending on the foundry, so while you should get similar results, you might not get EXACT results.

However... I wouldn't be afraid of experimenting on the real parts- bluing and the like can be removed with minimal effect to the piece. (Unless you apply a strong patinal to a plated metal that is very thin... then you run the risk of the plating getting eaten through. But that shouldn't be a worry in this case.)

Anyone else had trouble with the email address, mine keeps coming back as undelivered. If you use the email link on the order page it comes up with an ecommerce email box, however, as I don't know what the Japanese wording says I just emailed using my normal email program, but it won't send. Any ideas? :confused

@joatrash - Thanks for the tips. Do you know if white vinegar will work to remove bluing from zinc the same way it does for steel? I have some Googling to do, just figured I'd ask if you had experience with it already. Thanks again.

Okay, so I have been pondering ordering one of these for a while but have been a bit put off by the UK Firearms laws / customs etc, so I decided to take the bull by the horns and contacted HMRC (Customs and Excise) directly and asked the question. Whilst the guy on the phone would not give any guarantees (fairly typical of people in his position I guess) he did confirm what I had suspected that this kit did not fit any of the definitions relating to firearms etc. and he could see no reason why there should be any problems with UK customs provided any import duties etc were paid. So mine has hopefully been ordered. Hopefully you UK buyers will find this info useful (just don't blame me if it goes wrong!) :)
