ONRX...(sorry I messed up your name in the last post). Half the fun is doing it yourself. I understand your reluctance in giving it another go. Once you get your jacket maybe we can work something out.
Sure thing, Mike. I'll let you know once I have it.

I understand the struggle. I've spent about £70 on various liquitex products so far and that's just so I can test and nail the finish (which I'm getting closer to but not quite there). Then I'll have to spend another £30-40 buying the bulk quantity of whatever I choose to actually paint the coat. Testing, testing and more testing. At least you've been brave enough to try applying something.

Regarding the varnish, I didn't test it without painting. It was Liquitex who told me not to apply the varnish onto fabric without painting first, but that doesn't necessarily mean it won't work. Just that it needs a thorough testing first.

On that note, I'm rapidly running out of room on the testing scrap Zlurpo sent with my coat :lol
Sorry mate, you sended to me a message and did'nt answer it. I'm well aware ( I think) of your progress. This thing with the coating it is resulting more trickyest than I expected.

@ONRX and Hall86 - I've also run (nearly) out of space on my Zlurpo scrap trying various attempts at applying liquitex and other gloss sprays etc. I'm actually going back to my square one, with my final strip of extra Zlurpo material, and it actually just arrived - ordered a bar of Otter Wax. My original intention was to wax the fabric somehow, then when we all found out it was a laminate - and after watching several people 'paint' laminate it, i thought that was the move. However, I don't want to paint it a different color and I don't like what happens to the fabric when its been treated with a gloss substance. I've been looking at pictures of the coat again and really, it still looks a bit like waxed cotton to me, so thats the move I think I'm going to pursue. I don't want to lose the color Zlurpo gave us, since I think it's right, so painting it with a color paint before a finish is out of the question for me.

Looking at this picture:

it looks close enough to a "waxed" military coat to me, and I like the 'weathering' effect that waxed cotton has, so, meh.

ONRX, if I recall correctly, you used a pint or something of wax you needed to melt and then apply? I've heard this is a difficult way to do it and that rubbing a bar of wax is slightly easier, per some tutorials I've read. I'm not going to hold anything back on my last strip of extra Zlurpo fabric so I'll take pics after it happens.

This was the wax I bought:

Yes you are right. I went with Barbour wax, which is need to be melted and then aply, but this turns very complicated. The wax returns to his solid form every 3-5 minutes, and you have to be extra careful in order to try that the fabric not absorb too many wax and soaks. When this happens you have an oily finish that nevers dry. Also the can cost me around 30 dollars, and I think that at least 3 cans would be needed. Aniway I did'nt success in get a homogenic surface, only stains that indeed were shiny enough, but only here and there.
This pics are trash, but you get an idea:

It can look pretty cool, but believe me, is not. It's only that is very wet. I sended the jacket to barbour and they told me that the mess can be fixed but the shine with wax it's no posible to get in this kind of fabric. They waxed the jacket and return and like I said is ultra mate. In my eyes it looks like the fabric raw only that more darkest. I'll post some pictures. The jacket was charcoal and now is charcoal/blue navy. Ugly as hell. Almost 100 dollars more.

For me this is exactly the look that must have the coating. (I borrow this pics to @robo3687 who, for my eyes have achieved the accurate look).

But again, this coating is painting with acrylic paint the fabric.I don't want to paint the jacket because the Zlurpo's colour it is accurate. (well, I do not have the jacket yet and maybe change my mind). But especially, I do not want to paint it because I'm clumsy, period.

I sent you a message on Etsy because I haven't received a tracking number yet. If you need me to message you here too, please let me know!

I'll try and get some pics up of the coat tonight guys. Medium fits me well, being 5'9" and 75kg

yeah, i wanna see. after my comment (about a small fitting but snug - being your same build), i actually pulled the trigger on ordering a medium and I'm going to likely put my small up for sale at a discount (if anyone's interested inquiring about that).

Wow, I'd love to get this but if there is still work to be done in addition, thats not so appealing. Is anyone offering the coating service? Has this been updated where it comes coated?

Nope, the coats come non-coated.

A coating service would be nice. Specially for those clumsy as me. :cry

Zlurpo, any update on the first post second runners?

They're being made, and they should start shipping soon, maybe early next week as a start? Not sure yet.

*Ok guys I have found the answer to all of your questions about the coated coat the Coating is weather proofing and any of you can do it with the weather proofing can spray very easy and is inexpensive! You're welcome good luck !* P.S. the coat was waxed cotton and in the movie he is in the rain and snow so it would make sense to weather proof the coat

I can’t tell if this is ironic or not...
