Best Opening Title Sequence in Movie history

Oh wait, we're talking about titles. :lol

I guess you meant Saul Bass type stuff. :$

Well lots of old Hitchcock then... "Psycho", "North by Northwest", etc.

Speaking of Psycho, I always liked Stuart Gordon's "Re-Animator" titles, with all the anatomical art. Too bad they stole the music from Psycho. :$

As I recall "Gattaca" has an interesting title sequence but I don't recall it too specifically.

And "The Matrix" is probably the most memorable of the past 20 years or so. After a few camera passes through on-screen type, you lose track of what reality you're in. :lol

JAWS.....who can forget that music pulling you in immediately. Creating suspense like that in the opening titles should be illegal.

STAR WARS

SUPERMAN

Not the best but still pretty damn cool is the opening sequence from "Pitch Black"

I like the opening in the novel adaptation a lot better than in the film. The reason why is because the opening of it (and from what I recall of the audio commentary, this was also meant to be the opening of the film) starts off with Carolyn Fry (Radha Mitchell) waking up from hypersleep (like it is in the film). It conveyed the confusion that one might feel in that particular situation of going to sleep one moment and then waking up a short time later with choas at your front door. But, the opening with Riddick narrating who the passengers are is kinda good for what it is.

2001: A Space Odyssey (you do know you're looking at the surface of the monolith turned 90 degrees, don't you?) :D

as goofy as a movie it is "Mad Mad Beyond Thunderdome" has a great aerial opening sequence. It all goes quickly down hill from there.

Kind of a weird choice but Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon had a pretty cool opening - Bruce Leroy catching the arrows and stuff.

JAWS.....who can forget that music pulling you in immediately. Creating suspense like that in the opening titles should be illegal.

That's the truth, buddy! I was sitting in the theater with my dad at 11 years old with the music throbbing and Jaws coming up in big red letters and I remember thinking, "Uh oh. This could be bad!" 2 hours later I'm walking out of the theater tramatized!! :lol

That and Star Wars are the two that really impacted my from the moment the lights dimmed in the theater. Great opening, both of them.

-B89! :D

As the original poster and other members pointed out the opening title of Superman the Movie is what also came to my mind first - it's soo powerful made and with the mighty "woosh" of the "S"- shield - you really can't beat this.

The opening of Close Encounters is largely overlooked but awesome.

I agree. One of my favorite movies of all time.

Also Star wars, JAWS, ALIEN and The Shining. I feel fortunate that I'm old enough(44) to have seen all of these in the theatres as a kid.

The Buzby Berkley opening for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Sort of in the style of the golden days of Hollywood big chorus girl production number. Back when the movie premeired I LMAO as some some late comers did a double take and left thinking they were in the wrong theater.
