Best Opening Title Sequence in Movie history

Ummm, an "opening sequence" (the "teaser" in sitcom terms), and a "title sequence" (the opening credits) are technically two different things, aren't they?

On that note, the best TITLE sequence has to go to "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"

i really loved the opening of star trek first contact, with the pull-back from picards face, all the way to the introduction of the enterprise e. incredible

Can't believe no-one has mentioned Blade Runner's Hades Landscape. Totally blew me away in the theatre as a kid with Van Gelis' score booming out.

Also Apocalyspse Now and saving Private Ryan if you discount the annoying old dude. And the Dawn remake totally owns, even if the rest of the movie never quite lives up to it.

As for my favorite - well, to me it outshines them all with artwork and great music - here it is

"The inhabitants refer to it as the planet... Earth"
"How peaceful it looks" and a light blinking "EARTH QUAKE" is lit up.

Umm... if the term "Earth" was first mentioned just now, then how did they know to make the "EARTH QUAKE" button? :lol

It IS a good intro, don't get me wrong, this thing always got me giggling.

I figured Blade Runner & Star Wars wouldnt count as its a general concencious, as well as a few other pop movies, are automatically granted status. Serenity is up there as well. Its a prequel, ties in the tv show and then a sequel all before the credits roll.

I forgot about the Gone in Sixty Seconds remake. The history of the main character is played out in pictures and props as the opening credits roll. Its another ho humm movie with some good intentions.

You guys are definitely mixing up "opening sequence" with "title sequence."

The Superman title sequence has the titles SOARING at you with the WHOOSH. The title sequence of a movie is just that, the TITLE of the movie and the credits presented in a creative way. The James Bond movies have some of the most famous title sequences of all time.

What a lot of you are describing are PRE-TITLE sequences. To use James Bond, again, as an example, the remake of Casino Royale has a great pre-titles sequence with Bond cornering a villain and flashing back to how he killed the villain's partner in a brutal mens room fight to the death.

Then Bond shoots the guy and you begin the TITLE sequence with the cool animation of men falling... shattering as they hit the ground... the theme song playing, while the names of the actors flash across the screen.

Hope that description helps.

It's topics like this that make me miss Mike Verta.

^^^ thats what I thought, and why I said Casino Royale... :unsure

Yeah, as well you should! That was an awesome title sequence. Every time I watch the title sequence of Mad Men I wonder if they used the same company that made the Casino Royale title sequence. Gotta be, right?

I really like the Quantum Of Solace Title Sequence. Cool dawn / dusk colors, stylish typography. It was really art for me.

Also I still like the simpleness of Kubrick's title art, with Futura Bold titles. As Eyes Wide Shut etc.
