Best Opening Title Sequence in Movie history

The Superman title sequence has the titles SOARING at you with the WHOOSH. The title sequence of a movie is just that, the TITLE of the movie and the credits presented in a creative way.

To this day my mom says Superman was the only time she ever read the credits during a movie.

Looking at this simply from the point of view of home theater. My vote for the best movie opening sequence are:

Star Trek - The Undiscovered Country: When the moon exploded starting the movie, it rocked the house!

Top Gun - I think this is the most awesome opening sequence short of ST:TUC. When the music starts and the carrier deck action is going on. It rocked the house too.

I would say that Conan would be my #1- the whole film centers around the sword that is being forged while the credits roll.

Superman is a close second.

Alien is another good one- the vertical and diagonal lines on screen (that eventually form the word ALIEN) have been described as "hash marks" for each crew member killed.

ABRAMS Star Trek
(surprised no-one's mentioned this one yet)

Never felt so attached to a character within the first 5 minutes of a movie...

If were going strictly title sequence. Then Superman, but a LOT of that is the music. Yes the swooshing graphics are neat, but it's the music that makes that opening. Williams' BEST.

arc60 is correct- when I started the thread I meant the text titles/music/animation etc as opposed to pre-title sequence- al la;

-though I have enjoyed reading everyone's favorites on that subject- so two threads for the price of one ;)

You guys are definitely mixing up "opening sequence" with "title sequence."

The Superman title sequence has the titles SOARING at you with the WHOOSH. The title sequence of a movie is just that, the TITLE of the movie and the credits presented in a creative way. The James Bond movies have some of the most famous title sequences of all time.

What a lot of you are describing are PRE-TITLE sequences. To use James Bond, again, as an example, the remake of Casino Royale has a great pre-titles sequence with Bond cornering a villain and flashing back to how he killed the villain's partner in a brutal mens room fight to the death.

Then Bond shoots the guy and you begin the TITLE sequence with the cool animation of men falling... shattering as they hit the ground... the theme song playing, while the names of the actors flash across the screen.

Hope that description helps.

But there's a problem with that idea, though. Some films do not have opening titles. One such example is "The Dark Knight". So, how can we list a film's opening if no titles/animation/music exists?

Without Star Wars:

Watchmen
All Tim Burton (I like the most Batman returns and Sleepy Hollow)
A Nightmare before Christmas
Man with No Name trilogy

uuuuhhh... you dont...? why would you list a movie in the "best opening title sequence" thread if it doesnt have opening titles?

EDIT: He already said it can be for opening titles OR opening sequence - which The Dark Knight did have.

But with your definition of just "titles/music/animation", you should also exclude movies that have opening credits that take place over opening scenes such as "Touch of Evil".

I think the thread has evolved into, basically, "whats a movie that had a cool opening or a cool way of presenting the credits?". Just something special at the start of the movie to get you hyped up...

Sorry, I misread the "opening title/or opening scene" from the previous post you made. Didn't notice it until now.

Not the best, but should probably be up there:

Batman

Made you feel like you were going throught the mysterious batcave...then reveals the symbol. At least I thought it was pretty cool. :cool

Star Wars, the scrolling lore and then the attack on the Blockade Runner, SD scrawling across the screen... Fantastic, and always will be.
