Batman comic style costume. Leather cowl finished page 3

Wow what an amazing build. I love the attention to detail that you've given both your cowl and your cape. I am super envious right now :)

I've seriously been dying for you to get to this point. Very interested in how this was going to turn out.

Turned out fantastic, is what. Thank you so much for covering all the angles (inside and out) so thoroughly.

So, did you sew the seam and then glue interior excess leather back? Is that what I'm seeing?

Yes, you are correct. Rather than trimming the excess close to the seam, it is left longer and glued back. This prevents the leather from puckering up, or having a pronounced raised area on the outside. Keeps it all flat and neat.

Cool! Cool cool cool.

And thanks again, your technique is quite relevant to a build I'm very slowly grinding towards and I'm getting lots of insights from watching.

Can't wait to see whatever comes next.

Here's a couple of pictures as a preview.

Re: Batman comic style costume WIP. Update 12-04-2012

Your cape looks really great! I guess you get what you pay for! What were you planning on lining it with?

I'd love to see how your cape would look with a cowl like this:

I've often wondered how that cowl was made and why there didn't seem to be many leather batmen.

Hey, I was just browsing through this awesome thread, and I stumbled across this pic... do you happen to have any details/links for this build?

All I can tell you is where I found the picture: The 1966 Batman Message Board - Leather cowl revisited

and what Flash said earlier:

That cowl was made by a costumer over in England that went by the name "Goldenage" on the BOTB at one time. I don't think he does costuming anymore. It's a beautiful piece, but as I recall, it had zero neck movement. It was made over a form out of a single piece of mold-able leather. I'm envious of the craftsmanship in it. A gorgeous piece, and great for photos, but would be tough to costume with. Still, I wouldn't turn it down if it was handed to me.

As far as a lining, I'm not sure that I'm going to do one. It looks really striking when the cape is flipped over the shoulders, showing the inside. The look of the backside of the cape, along with the seam work makes for a nice contrast that seems to work well.
