"BATA" HLMF / HRMF Decals 90% done (95% hasbro parts HRMF build)

The Accel logo is located on the underside of the raised 'jawbox' section on starboard edge, just to the rear of the landing gear...btw, there is also a new decal just aft of the Accel, not sure what it is?? Red & white lettering or numbers maybe...reference Guy Cowen's image [IMG_0053.JPG]

Robert, I sent you some files to help with the tracker.

...btw, there was a question about the names being found written in several places on the Falcon...these names are of the model builders and crew who worked with the Falcon, here is a list of confirmed found names (so far)...

Joe Johnston - effects illustrator and designer: miniature and optical effects unit

Jon Erland - model builder: miniature and optical effects unit

Lorne Peterson - model builder: miniature and optical effects unit

Paul Huston - model builder: miniature and optical effects unit

...other possible names that might be 'somewhere' on the Falcon are...

David Jones - model builder: miniature and optical effects unit

Steve Gawley - model builder: miniature and optical effects unit

David Beasley - model builder: miniature and optical effects unit

Grant McCune - chief model maker: miniature and optical effects unit

...there may even be others...one odd one that I found that has not been tracked so far is...

Mary Lind - film control coordinator: miniature and optical effects unit

...she was found on the starboard bottom outer side of the cockpit cone, just before the tube begins going straight back...it looks as if it was hand written and was later 'gone missing', being completely removed by scratches to the starboard side of the cockpit (purposely?)...it was only seen on images shot very early in production, like in this B&W image...

VEH_IA_847_reduced.jpgVEH_IA_847_zoom.jpg

...but was then 'gone missing' in later images...

...this search has become a detective story...heh!

Is there photogrfaphs of these names written on the Falcon? So now the OCDs who want a perfect copy of the FAlcon must include these signatures too, huh?
LOL!

Okay "guys"; I have published the survey artifacts up to this date via our local modeling club's website. You can go to the Hampton Roads Scale Modelers' website and pull down the files (the article is archived under the 'TOOLS>RESEARCH' page) which include:
1) The Decal Tracker spreadsheet
2) An InSitu Decal Images archive that uses the same numbering as the spreadsheet so you can see the 'original' decal.
The Post on the site is direct linked HERE as well.

I will post periodic updates to these artifacts through the club website & provide notification via this thread (or another that may end up as a sticky, we'll see...)
Now, here is a list of the images that could be improved, so if you're bored, go through your references and see what you can find to make the images 'catalog' better. Also, if you can ID the source of any of the decals, please contribute that info to the survey. Thanks again for all the hard work by retiredadguy, imurme, Junkpilot & JPCOdessa (and anyone else I apologize for forgetting...) It definitely has been a team effort! Regards, Robert

Just love the detective angle.Whats with the removed name? Do you think they thought it was just too prominent up front there or was it personal....

Probably have to ask any of the guys whose names remained... ;^P

Speaking of the 'detective' aspect of this, I found the source of this decal, #139:no_139.jpg
It comes from Microscale sheet MC-4026 Burlington 25' & 35' Piggy Back Trailers & Tractors 1949; it is the lower half of the "Burlington Route" signage decal. Of course, this is the sheet it is *currently* available on, but most likely not the original source since the sheet number is too recent (too high). However, the graphic would have been used on an earlier sheet or this one is a reissue of a prior sheet. Either way, this is exactly the one (the white 'area' is the word 'Route'...) I found this by digging through a pile of MS decal sheets at my local railroading hobby shop (shout out to "Dale's Train Station" in Norfolk, VA, USA) on a whim while running errands.

Always a story!

I purchased that sheet so I could do a scan of that decal & document the 'source' for the above decal placement. Basically, I'd like to ID the source of all the decals if possible. I also purchased the MS 87-2 sheet, "Gothic Style RR Data Capy, ACI "C" Plates / Builders Plates". which was apparently the source of the numerous 'data plate' placements. I say 'apparently' because I now can measure the exact size of the MS graphic which then can be compared to the one's on the 5-footer to verify it was the HO scale sheet (could have been the 'O' scale sheet as well... many sheets in the Microscale range are available in multiple scales.)

And so it goes... say anyone download the files yet? I'd like feedback on how its working. Cheers!

Robert, nice work getting the info put up on the site! I'm sure everyone with interest in the falcon will appreciate the research being done....

I downloaded the files, no problem...(one image in the 'InSitu' zip was corrupt, but found it online [enhancedradardish_zps6d72c037.JPG])

...one question more about a file in 'InSitu'...Where is the 'red scrap' located in image [red scrap.jpg]?

I will look thru the images and see if I have a few better shots in my library, too...

Now a few updates...

Looking at some older shots of the falcon in the Star Wars Chronicles book I noticed a couple more decals that have fallen off since and are not visible in current images...

5-foot_crop05.jpg5-foot_crop04.jpg5-foot_crop03.jpg5-foot_crop02.jpg

First, if you look at the top starboard side access tunnel about 2/3rds from the center out you see a larger red-black-white block design (#131 in tracker), then look opposite that position on the port side tunnel and there is a duplicate version on that side that has 'gone missing', I don't see any trace of it in recent photos.

Also notice, back on the starboard access tunnel, at the forward inner edge, near the center turret, is a 'champion' logo decal (now marked as #7e in latest tracker)...decal is missing now.

5-foot_crop01.jpg

You also get a pretty good view of the newly tracked (#2e) 'cummins powered' decal on the forward starboard mandible end...also now missing.

5footcollage.jpg5footcollage_zoom.jpg

Another one I found that was in the SW Chronicles that is not 'officially' in the tracker yet is an 'emergency rescue' placard from an F-4 stencil sheet, found on the center of the round 'airlock' on the upper greeblie (this part has also disappeared since that time taking the decal with it)...I'm not sure if it had a duplicate on the opposite side as there are no photos of that side in the book...

...and you were probably thinking there couldn't possibly be more...heh!

{Yup, I noticed that after I pushed it out; will correct on the next update - I found that image in another thread and for some reason it didn't download cleanly... I wanted it because it showed a placard placement on the base that mirrors the 'glue residue' yellow 'blocks' on the five-footer...]

...one question more about a file in 'InSitu'...Where is the 'red scrap' located in image [red scrap.jpg]?
[Sorry, that is at the "top" of the upper surface of the jawbox. near the core.. it was a different shape than the other red blocks that are arrayed the length of the JB]

I will look thru the images and see if I have a few better shots in my library, too...
[I found the Frank Wire archive via the WayBack Machine, which didn't have *all* his images unfortunately. They looked pretty good, and from 2002 also.]

[Right! Good documentation catch there. I'll add these findings to the next spreadsheet update. These images are gold... for example, I can see the "Lucky Strike logo" was a full circle in the fourth image above (shows as a red dot) as I suspected. Also, the decal on between the hatches on the sherman upper hull plate on the port dock tunnel top was a full decal as well - so if we can ID it, we're good.]

Also notice, back on the starboard access tunnel, at the forward inner edge, near the center turret, is a 'champion' logo decal (now marked as #7e in latest tracker)...decal is missing now. [Yes, and you can see the ISKY Cams logo pretty clearly also - I was still looking for a decent view of that spot, since a blurry yellow smudge doesn't tell much ;^) ]

[That rescue placard (the yellow and black thing in the right image) may actually be from one of the Microscale decal sheets; there were decals that looked exactly like that on some of those I saw; though, I suspect you're right... but we have other candidates now!]

...and you were probably thinking there couldn't possibly be more...heh!
[Oh, I was hoping we were getting to the end, but even now, in the left pix above, there is that vertical yellow stripe that may be an HO 'trailer' data plate like I found earlier. It just seems like there is some text on it... Once again, great work digging these images up. I keep hoping someone will pop up with more period images - I'd really like to nail down that colored stripe on the base of the dish (can almost make it out above, but at least we have the length of that stripe below the dish!) and those missing markings on the starboard mandible tip...Cheers! Robert]

Here is the best image I found...it's not the best angle and the decal is pretty tattered, but you can make out the large 'I' in isky

Well...the yellow decal I found on the docking ring does look similar to the others (#62, #153)...but in fact I have ID those others as being from the same MicroScale sheet as the RR data plates...take a look again at the sheet here, you can see the yellow boxes, a perfect match, no?...there ya go!

Good catch, that makes the ISKY decal's placement & orientation pretty clear. I appreciate the link for Frank's images; I'm attempting to download now... thanks so much, it came out okay! As of now, I have access to (besides Frank's) the two archives on OneDrive (slowly pulling off Steve's but it takes a while), Fantastic Plastic archive, pics from Flickr postings, some Guy Cowen's, some from Dr. Maul, JetCity Jetta's archive (Photobucket, I believe) & the one's you've provided - so quite a few!

Speaking about the F-4 RESCUE placard, to me the proportions in the image don't match the F-4 images; it does however look more like one I saw on a Microscale RR Loco sheet which was of the same form. However, we're dealing with some really blurry sources so it is tough. We're pretty sure they used an F-4 sheet (though the scale is still up in the air until we can get some measurements & compare to an F-4 kit sheet (I have an Revell F-4 in my stash, so can look that up...)

Too bad the Microscale website's catalog images are so tiny otherwise it might be a good resource for getting this sorted.

Of course, as I write this, I wonder if I'm just being too contrary ("picky"?) on these points...?

Keepin' truckin' - and hope to provide an update to the files posted shortly.

Cheers! Robert

Re: "BATA" HLMF / HRMF Decals 90% done (95% hasbro parts HRMF build)

Now! The infamous "S" decal (item #30.) I have the sneaking suspicion that it is a Shelby Cobra logo (the hooded snake) but I've not located a source for one yet with the same coloration (red snake on white circle background on a dark encompassing square. I even though the tiny projection at the top might be a 'crown' as in King Cobra... I searched against it being a 'Speedway" gasoline logo but no joy with that one. It particularly looks like the Cobra logo in the second image below:

no_30_pt1.jpgno_30.jpgThoughts?

Also, item #81, the tattered black & yellow decal turned out to not match a 'No Step' decal marking from an F-4 Phantom sheet. It has an array of small "T" shapes that I haven't seen anywhere else. Another mystery!no_81.jpgno_81_pt2.jpg

NEW decal (for me, anyway...) Located at the starboard aft corner of the upper jawbox, top surface, is a port, front cockpit side panel from an F-4 Phantom kit. I have numbered this as item #110b (for now) even though it may not be a repeat of the side panel on the underside (which may be the starboard panel... and not a dupe or mirror of this one.) Here is what it looks like:no_110b.jpg

Locator image is below.

-------------------------------------------------------update
I have confirmed that the other 'side panel' decal on the underside is from the starboard side so 110a & 110b are actually different decals. I shall renumber accordingly.

Per Imurme's research, the missing 'Champion Spark Plugs' logo (item #7e) was placed atop the inner end of the starboard dock tunnel. Below is a view of the adhesive residue showing the faint shape of the missing decal.no_7e_missing residue.jpg

However, looking again at the pix showing the MF as originally built, this location seems to have a square decal, not a long, rectangular one like the Champion logo. Also the residue apparent above would seem to be oriented in the wrong direction (save and then zoom images to see it better.) Still need a clearer image of this area to settle this discrepancy!

#113 is just a glue spot from a missing piece.

Craig
Craig, thanks for the input. Do you have an image that shows the missing part in place or a closeup image that clearly shows the 'item'? #113 is also re-numbered as item #50; make sure and download the latest Tracker from the HRSM website.
Thanks for 'joining the team'!

I looked at this in image [695_SWI_8204.jpg] from Steven's OneDrive archive (first batch) and it appear to 1) have no decal film and 2) is slightly irregular. With the two 'holes' in the original part, and it's long narrow shape, I surmise the missing part may have been a link of spare tank tread, as used frequently on the MF. But just an educated guess. Need a view of the bottom from before the model became so beat up.
