Banners slowing down load time?

Man, is it just me or is the RPF taking forever to load, now?

I've never had this much trouble...I've noticed the prop store and sideshow banners just flashing away while nothing else will load.

Frustrating.

How bout a toggle in the cp?
If we can turn off signatures, we should be able to turn off add banners.

Signatures don't help keep the site up and running.

Banners do.

We are still looking into this as some people seem to be having an issue and others aren't.

It's just the sideshow banner.

This morning, this banner took FIFTY ONE SECONDS to load:

http://affiliates.sideshowtoy.com/JsTracker.aspx?aid=90&cids=62&size=468x60

And it's just certain banners. Some sideshow banners work fine, some do not.

And, once it doesn't load, it won't load on any other JY pages, so you have to wait, again, each time you click a thread topic or go to the next page.

I've had the same issue with Sideshow affiliate banners on SciFiGeeks.com and PatchGeeks.com. I ended up having to reduce the time they're in rotation because of the complaints I was getting.

I realize that the potential ad revenue generated from these banners are around $23/day* - which is damn good - but there's the annoyance factor for viewers you have to consider.

I wish we were doing even 1/10 of that a day from sideshow... :( Not even in the ballpark. :unsure

If that's the case, can you really say:
Signatures don't help keep the site up and running.

Banners do.

Sounds like someone needs to take a look at whether or not it makes sense to have them here at all. Do they bring enough (financially) to the board to make it worth the hassle they are apparently causing for the members?

The fact that the Sideshow link isn't bringing in tons of revenue to offset the cost of running the site doesn't mean it doesn't bring in anything at all.

The fact of the matter is, if the site were bringing in the $8k a year that websiteoutlook indicates, there would be a LOT of things that would be different around here and we would be hiring people to take care of certain things instead of having to beg favors and hope that enough volunteers step forward for the various needs the site has.

Right now, the site is barely paying for itself so every little bit helps... including the Sideshow link. As I said, we are working on it.
