Back to the Future

I have a 9x13 print directly from Andrew Probert for sale if anyone wants it...

Depends on the price. :) I had seen your eBay sale of that print, but your starting bid of $200 was a bit too high for me.

Since we know at least one page of the used comic, it's possible to find the whole correct comic. ;)

Yes, that's one of my next projects next month. The 3 pages of the letter, the 1 page of the repair instructions and both envelopes. :)

Quick question on trying to ID this comic... do we think the Red Ryder back cover is part of the core book? Or do you think the actual inner comic is more modern and the back cover was added along with the custom cover?

I just want to know if it is worth the time to scan some books from the back covers or if that will just throw me off course...

The "Red Ryder" advertising is original from the 50s and was just part of the custom made cover for the movie. The inner comic is probably from the 80s, so I don't think that it has the "Red Ryder" page.

Good luck with your search. I hope someday will someone find that comic.

You may have done more research than I already, but when I stared checking back covers it looked like it was from 1940?

Not sure if that really matters, but if I ever come across an original comic with that back cover I may buy one (or more if people are interested) I have a family member who owns a comic shop.

I will see if anyone can figure out the guts of this comic...

Okay, could be the 40s. But the "Red Ryder" ad is not the problem - I already have it on my hard disc in a very (very!) high resolution. We're just searching for the inner comic. And the style of the comic on that sample photo is not from the 40s or 50s. It looks more like a comic from the 70s or 80s.

Got it. I will post again if I find anything. Really liked your dust jacket, btw!

Just to be clear: the original Red Ryder Add is not on the back of a comic! It's found INSIDE a comic book. And the comic book the add is in, is not the correct inner comic.

I don't know if that exact add is in more than one comic. I searched for a very long time to find the exact one, and only found one particular comic. I found a lot of comics that have a Red Ryder add that comes close, but where the coloring is slightly different, or the bottom left box with the other gun types is different, etc... The only correct one I found (and the owner of the comic was kind enough to scan the add in high resolution) was somewhere inside of the comic, not on the back.

If you search the internet hard enough you can easily find out what comic was used for the red Ryder ad ;)

Yeah, at the end, you can find everything on the internet if you search hard enough ;). Why not just saying that the add is in issue 17 of the "Smash Comics" series, saving other RPF members some hours figuring out where to find the add? Finding a high res scan of the add is another thing, since you won't find a copy of this comic for an affordable price.

Anyway, I'll post the high res scan I have sent to Roland tonight. I just hope that someone who owns a good version of the front art is also willing to share this with the RPF community and post it too.

well tom since I asked you for the file about 2 weeks ago you specifically stated to me you didn't feel comportable sharing it with me so NOW it's ok to share with everyone????

Since I knew what comic it was literally right after you messaged me and denied me the file I figured Id'e be nice to YOU by not sharing any info on it to the rest of the world just in case you were looking to do a run of some sort because that's the way I operate.

You mentioned also about saving rpf members time looking for the comic then why didn't you tell ME what comic it was at the time of me searching?? I don't think I'm the one hoarding information here Tom.

Just to be clear now that i opened my mouth it's ok to share but a day ago it was just vague information?

Well what's the comic???

Also Tom I'm not looking to start a war here it's just that when it come to back to the future EVERYONE seems to walk on egg shells when it comes to certain information that's all.

Tom sent me his file three month ago, in case that I will ever work on a replica of that comic. The file has a great resolution: 5529 x 4283 pixels. Since he (and everyone else) knows that I share my work for free, I never thought about a possible run he wants to do.

I hope I could finish that "walk on egg" with all my work. :p

Like the specs for the Pepsi perfect bottle... I have asked time and time again for the SA measurements and nobody ever wants to give that detail. :(

Thanks for the info... not that many comics from 1940s can be found cheaply, but it will be fun to keep an eye out for it at cons -- and ask my relative, too.

After your statement, I realized that keeping this information for myself is just nonsense. It also took me quite some time to trace the add, but what use is it to keep this info to myself? I already shared the add with Roland, but since this whole discussion about the add comes up here, I thought: "Why not share it with the whole community, so people don't have to spent hours on tracing the add." I don't exactly know where I found the info about the Smash Comic, but after I found out the correct comic, I traced someone on eBay who bought a copy of that comic (for A LOT of money) and politely asked if he could make me a high-res scan of the add. That person agreed and has sent me the add. So that's where I got it.

I see no problem whatsoever for me to share it over here if I want too. I wasn't planning on sharing it with everybody in the beginning, but since it's just ridiculous that people have to do exactly the same as me to get the add, and there is no skill or creativity needed to get it, I changed my mind, and will post the add here soon (the file is 9 megs, so I'll have to see where to place it).

And lets face it: the only reason people are not sharing knowledge, is because they might make a profit of their knowledge sooner or later. If that knowledge is shared, they can't make any profit of it any more. That's why I sent Roland this file: he makes such great files and shares them for free! He could have made hundreds of dollars of profits by doing runs of these props himself, but he chooses to just share all his work for free. I can only admire this kind of generosity!
