Back to the Future museum at Comic Con

I think calling the car screen used is misleading as renesisx was saying. The majority of the time machine parts on the car are replicas so the car should be sold as a screen used chassis with a replicated time machine conversion.

Desi, I get your analogy between a muscle car stock restoration / resto mod, but the problem in your case is that the car IS a resto mod. There are no factory nos time machine parts from universal to do a true restoration, so everything was replicated. You added lights and effects that were never there, straying from originality.

My other issue is that the replicated parts on the car are not screen accurate to the original part 1 cars or the part 3 car as it was originally built. For example, the time circuit displays and the box they are housed in are not correct tto any of the cars. The displays are too large by up to 3/16 of an inch in height and width, so compound that by the height of 3 displays and they are over 1/2" too large.

There are other examples too of how there were changes made and corners cut. The flux band tubing is noticeably too large and throws off the proportions of other parts . There are just too many details missed by some of the the guys you bought these parts from to call it an accurate representation of what is seen on screen. The lay person may not notice or even realize, but for the way the car is being portrayed and the price tag attached it isn't fair to bidders to call it screen used.

Wow..I was merely positing a question here about screen-used vs. Restorations vs. Replicas.

Clearly another grey area to our hobby.

To me, this is like getting screen-used chest and back pieces of ANH Stormtrooper armor, and using FX pieces to fill in the rest and then saying the whole thing is Restored Screen-used Stormtrooper armor.

It is, from a certain point of view.

But if I'm the guy shelling out $$$$$ for something called screen-used, it sure better be.

Sorry about the detour.

That is exactly what Jeff and Desi did, they "saved a car".

All true words.

Plus...when anybody sells something don't they always spin it to be the best possible viewpoint....car, furniture or prop.

I think that its sad to sell the car but truth is when Marilyns dress which was also changed and never reported as such in profiles catalogue goes for 6,000,000 then who wouldnt want a piece of that pie.

I think that all the information that anyone would want on this "remake" is there for all to see. People will bid for it based on that and how cool the finished version is.

I for one salute the work.....

slave1pilot, yes stop by booth 1605 - we'll have the BTTF3 Time Machine there along with several props and wardrobe from all 3 movies. Hoverboards, Doc's telescope, Doc's train shirt, Biff's cane, etc. I don't want to ruin the fun of the discovery, so for those coming to SDCC, stop by and say hello.

I had only posted my comment in a vain attempt to get this topic back on track.
Obviously, it failed to do so.
It seems that bickering over what constitutes "screen-used" is far more important than what is being displayed at SDCC.

slave1pilot, stop by booth 1605 and ask for me and I will give you the tour of all the props/wardrobe on display.

And on the Replica Prop Forum, in the "screen used" section of all places.

Huh.

Desi,

You're lucky this conversation is on The RPF, if we were having this on TMPF then it would be a lot less civilized, the guys over there are like wolves for these sorts of conversations :)

Your analogy of the Hoverboards was mis-leading. If I received a complete "photo" board, then I would leave it as-is. I wouldn't strip any prop down and rebuild it the way I think it should be built.

If I received a basically blank Hoverboard with nothing on it, then I would use some of the screen-accurate lenticular material I have and do my best to recreate the "hero" style board.

When you received the Off-Road Car it was basically stripped down to nothing. It wasn't a finished car that you stripped down and rebuilt. So the analogy doesn't work.

I can't remember you ever selling anything else that fits into this weird category of partly screen-used. I have many other items in my collection that came from Screen Used which I'm very happy on the provenance.

This car just falls into a weird zone. Don't screw the untainted reputation of your company by selling something which isn't what it seems.

That's the thing Charles, it is what it is. I'm not hiding anything. I would have loved it to be a complete car, but I'll take what I can get - and so far it's the only screen used car that has made it out of Universal. If it ends up selling later this year, I will spend hours with the new owner going over everything in detail. I'm completely open with what was done, and how it was restored. There are always pieces that can be improved - remember, we started this car 8 years ago. If the new owner wants to take it on, they can update some of the pieces to be more accurate if needed. And like I mentioned, if they prefer, they can remove lights, sound, recreated props, without hurting anything - we used all the original mounting holes.

All I want to say is...Desi, thank you for rescuing at least one of the cars!:thumbsup

What a shame you all are being so rude. Desi has done an amazing job with this car. He's been 100 percent transparent with HOW they did it.

End of story. Find another thread to flame in. Let us enjoy the beautiful car because some of us LOVE this stuff. Lord, some of you are children. Grow up.

Here here! Amazing work Desi! I'm glad to see that at least one of the cars has been treated so well. I just wish one of the other cars could be sold to you for similar treatment.

Yes thank you for saving this car.

Sometimes the state of these aging props require extensive work and restoration to bring them back to life. Regardless of the restore, the base of the piece is and will always be screen used. He has been fair in description and in his honesty.

I hear there are two DeLoreans on display at the con? is this true? If so no wonder some replica builders were bashing an original car...

Yeah, there's one built by Fight Club on the Hot Wheels stand at the Comic Con. I have to say, it's pretty much a flawless replica. Easily the best one I've ever seen.

Saying that though, except for supplying the tires, I've had nothing at all to do with the build of that car, and that's not the reason I'm offering up my opinion on Desi's car. I didn't even know the car existed until a few weeks ago.

Is this idea with this board that someone puts together a replica to sell and we all praise it to the highest, regardless of any flaws?

Some people need thicker skins.
