AVP 3d bas relief

oooh cool! I was going to get a tattoo on my back of that image. Its looking good so far! XD
I've always liked the picture and I can see how you would want a tattoo.
Thought it would be a good idea to show the actual picture I'm working on for reference. It also helps me flip from photos of sculpt to the original to see where I'm at with progress. I can already see things I need to modify - bugger.

Photos show detailing in the backapck, upper arm and chest armour. Backpack is nearly finished except for the glyphs and final smoothing and some detail to the underside. I'm going to use some artistic license by writing my name in Yautja on the side of the backback instead of the type in reference photos. Seem to have made a rod for my own back by going hyper detailed on the backpack, as I'll need to likewise on the rest of sculpt. Found my old magnifying lamp so can at least see what I'm doing now.
:p

The piece is turning out really well! I absolutely cannot sculpt at ALL, so anyone that can gets huge kudos from me. I'm really excited to see the piece continue to take shape, so keep us posted.

Cheers Justin. Quite keen to document this project as I haven't done anything this detailed in a long time. Meant to photograph a coke can beside it for scale. The last 2 photos were taken with a macro lens so you're seeing the sculpt at much closer quarters than you would normally. Certainly throws up the errors and tool marks. :p

That's ok, nothing wrong with that. Me, personally, I always seem to picture that picture, that shape of the alien and predator, being fixed onto the pyramid from the movie somewhere, so I like the idea of it looking a little unrefined, like it's carved from stone or something.

Yours is looking great, though, with the extra detailing you're putting into it.

More or less finished the Predator half of the sculpt but having a problem deciding what the bottom of the chest armour is like just below his armpit. Reference photos of AVP Predator looks different from the poster I'm working from. Anyone got any idea? Note the differnce in the way I've sculpted between the first and latest photos.
Close up photos show how leaving a piece of work under the bed for 18 momths isn't a good idea. Bloody thing is covered in hair but hopefully they won't show in the cast.

Cheers. Now it's time to get cracking on Alien. Shouldn't be so long with it hopefully, as it was more detailed after my initial work last year.

One more picture of the completed Predator.

Re-started work on the Alien today and have already ripped into the lower half of the dome as I wasn't happy with the work I did last year. Problem with leaving something so long untouched is you see things that you never noticed before. Hope the Alien progresses quicker than Predator as I'm growing bored and want to get it moulded/cast and finished.

This is really fantastic.

I'm really looking forward to getting a cast of this.

Have you thought about a background yet?

Cheers mate. Haven't given the background a lot of thought yet. My initial thinking was to leave it completely plain so all attention is drawn to the main subject. Conversely the background could be painted with glyphs but left completely flat. Don't think I will do the background slightly raised in 3d, for the reason stated above. Once the sculpt is finished I will try various finishes on the cast and background.
Any thoughts yourself?

At the start of the thread I said I was 75% finished, who was I kidding. Might have 75% of the form done but only had 25% of the detail. At least the Predator is more or less finished now and I'm in the process of re-doing the Alien's head/neck. When that's done I'll need to work out the repeat pattern for the tail, as it's very rough just now.
Once I get a bit more of Alien completed I'll post more pictures, hopefully outdoors when our incredibly ***** weather improves. Can't really complain too much when you see the conditions Dumfries or Cumbria are having to deal with.

Outstanding job...
excellent details in all, very clean
congratulations!
Thanks elmen. When I started the sculpt I was making do with a fairly rough representation, but after leaving it a while I decided to go for a much more detailed finish. Achieving this is extremely time consuming and tiresome on the old eyes, even with a magnifying lens. I'm also not the fastest of workers I'm afraid.
Glad you like it so far.

Thought I had made some good progress with Alien's head/neck and then I read this post this morning. Looks like I've been using inacurate photos for adding detail that's not visible in AVP poster. Damn, blast and buggeration. Had a look at AVP DVD and ADI book to double check, and to my horror discovered I'd screwed up. So back to sqaure one again for the second time. Correct version will probably be easier to sculpt but I've just wasted about 8 hours eye straining work.

What a bummer! I remember you commented on my starting over, which I felt really sucked, but once I had I knew it was worth it. So, I know how you're feeling, pal, but just keep at it. It'll be worth redoing it to know it's been done right!

Is this the quote you mean: "You like to do things the hard way don't you. Paint then strip, the paint again. ****** sake son, get it right first time. laugh.gif"
Not sure if you mean it sucked because I made the comment or because you had to do it again. If it was the former then please accept my apology, as it was a poor attempt at humour and wasn't meant to offend. Either way it worked out for you and I will also get there in the end. I never ever get anything right first time and if it's worth doing, it's worth doing right.
BTW I noticed from your profile you're 23 and I'm an old fart, so that entitles me to call you son. :p

Oh, absolutely not, you never offended me at all! I meant that I felt it really sucked to "have" to start over, but I knew it was worth it after.

Yeah, I'm a little on the younger side, and I've still got a lot to learn. Every time I restart a project, I learn quite a lot, so. Everything I do helps, the good AND the bad.
